Axiom Legal

"Axiom Legal" is a temp agency masquerading as something new, so cool, and so different. But actually it's 10 times worse than any agency with the bullshit you have to put up with.

Axiom was started several years ago by a former Davis Polk associate who claimed to hate the legal business and who thought he could compete against them with "a new kind of firm". It was to be based in a loft office in Soho with all sorts of cool people. Like the Spiderman song, "Be yourself in a world that's crazy and cool". I'm soooooooooooooooooooooo Axiom!

Axiom said no more big law firm B.S. with the partners raking in big margins off associate work. They went to various big firm type clients like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to offer "the same service at a better price".

They then interviewed people, who had to fit their cool, mod-squad image. Any independent thinker or non-clone was definitely off-the-list. No they had to have a lot of artists and aspiring models.

Their key interviewer was Don Carlson, a smirk-face asshole from Harvard and Goldman. Kiss his prematurely bald-headed butt big time or you'll never get through the door!

Well lo and behold, Axiom brought in a private equity fund hedge fund to buy their shares a la Update.

While hyping themselves as something so trendy and insisting how they are not a temp agency, that's all they are, as they now gigglingly admit.

If you love kissing ass and love working in a Soho loft with a bunch of loser wannabes, then Axiom is the place for you!

Thanks for this info, Tom.
It's good to be able to get this type of inside info. from this site. I had never heard of Axiom before -- and I doubt they will ever hear from me but it's still good to know what's out there.

I worked with a model once. She was very pretty, tall and lithe. And very nice. I gave her a box to review. I came back five hours later and she had done one doc. and then fainted from hunger.

She was so pretty. So I gave her an easier box and came back ten hours later. One was done. she had again passed out from hunger and her chair smelled of vomit.

It was very sad. I miss her. She was so pretty ....and so nice.

Since no attorneys actually work out of the Soho office of Axiom, it's pretty clear that you know nothing about Axiom.

Its funny about "Axiom". I once a ran a legal links page. I had a category for temp agencies. I listed Axiom. The listings were free.

But, some cunt from thei office e-mailed me to take down their, because they "aren't a temp agency".

So yeah, they are just another group of self-aggradizing clowns. I would imagine they will be among the first agencies to go belly up. These trendy, financial services catering shops are in big trouble.

But don't you dare call them a temp agency, heh heh.

Same shit offered under a different platter cover. Salesman rails against the killer hours, the inefficiencies, the oppressive nature of it all, and tries to sell a message of populism to the legal underclasses. Salesman lands a client or two, gets seduced by the big bucks, gets bought out by a hedge fund and comfortably retires. Abandoned agency with snippy college girls on commission gets added to the dung heap of crappy, low life agencies.

It's the nature of the temp industry that this happens.

Temps are way too easy to replace (except for certain foreing langauge ones). Anyone can learn how to code documents (that probably aren't read anyway) in say a week. Learning how to any other type of legal work requires about six months if you're smart, but then you become very valuable to the firm. The only thing a temp has to be able to do is sit in one place for long hours doing dull work.

Every lawyer is easy to replace. With law schools opening on every corner and outsourcing picking up speed, expect it to get only worse.

Anonymous said...

Ya sure, you betcha lawyers are hard ta replace.

That's why associates generally last about 2 yrs and big firms routinely hire law student summer associates to replace them.

90% of all law is cut n past, slamchop monkey work.

Attys are a dime o' dozen, especially now that they are being canned left and right.

Poverty researchers say some of the increase in college-educated poor is, in an odd way, the byproduct of a good thing — a more educated population. But, as degrees have become more than plentiful, they have become less a guarantee of success.

“What I’m finding is more and more people who are under-employed. Someone might have a master’s degree but they’re working as a retail salesperson,” says Mike McLaren, a career consultant for Workforce Alliance in West Palm Beach.

Economists and poverty researchers say multiple factors may account for the increase in needy college graduates: Not only a massive rise in college attendance, but also a shortage of high-end jobs, stagnant wages and outsourcing.
The educated poor come from all backgrounds but, according to the latest census analysis, most are white. Florida has a slightly greater percentage of poor college graduates than the country as a whole, the data show. In fact, in Florida, there are more poor adults 25 and older with some college education than there are poor adult high school dropouts — a seemingly paradoxical statistic resulting from rising rates of college education and sharp falling numbers of dropouts.

Anonymous said...

Whatever.

I don't know what kind of firm you've been working at, but most legal work is not "cut n past, slamchop monkey work." It requires an intelligent analysis of the facts.

Also most attorneys lateral at 2-3 years because they get a better offer.

And no, experienced competent lawyers are not easy to replace. In fact if you've ever had to hire someone, you'd find it's very difficult to find someone that can do a decent job.

On the other hand, an attorney who has been clicking away on docs in front of a computer for x number of years, is easy to replace. This is why the temp agencies can take advantage of you.

Anonymous said...

hey bc,
Bro your gonna get f'd up tonight

Anonymous said...

"Also most attorneys lateral at 2-3 years because they get a better offer"

Riiiiiight. You are full beans. Let me guess, you're a dipshit first year.
You are just ignorant. Most associates burn out in 2 or 3 years when they realize they are never going to do more than slapchop.

Go back to TLS, lemming.

Anonymous said...

That's a bunch of BS.

What do you think happens after 3 years, all the attorneys decide to temp?

Hell no. They jump from mid/small law to solo/gov/Biglaw or Biglaw to mid/small/solo/gov/in-house counsel.

And some don't burn out. They hang around and make large amounts of $$$.

Despite what you may think, most attorneys are not temping.

The one thing BigLaw has taught me to do and do well is to lie through my teeth. I now use that skill every time I go on an interview with a temp agency.

Sure, I'd love to do document review ad nauseum at a fraction of the price I was doing it as a corporate attorney at my former law firm.

Sure, I'm available for work that is more boring than watching a fly masturbate and only slightly less painful than herpes.

Sure, I'm a hard worker and I'd love to put my well honed contract drafting skills learned as a corporate paper pusher and/or highly skilled legal writing abilities learned on law review to work using Summation and right clicking on little columns and then scrolling down to "responsive" or "not responsive."

Awesome.

Allow me to make a few things clear.

Many of you have railed against the staff attorneys at major firms -- that they are stupid and ghetto and that perfectly decent people don't get hired while they do.

Yes, that is the point. I am sorry but many of you with good, solid degrees or with a nice, decent backgrounds will NOT put up with how we want to treat you.

But these people will. Some and just poor, others did not go to good schools. We know they will put up with anything.

You other halfway decent educated folks would run in a few months and we would have to train someone all over again.

The stench of desperation and mediocrity is what was are looking for .

Confident unexploitative people need not apply.

Better Coder, you apparently are having much better luck than me. This year has been nothing short of dismal. During the first three months of this year, there was absolutely nothing. Lately, it has been a mad dash to secure one or two week projects with insane hours with no OT, and low pay. The emotional drain of having to secure and scrounge around for these short term gigs, which we often find ourselves jerked around on with delayed start dates is a lot too take. Despite all this, I have been able to make a dent in my student loans in over a year, and am actually adding debt to my credit cards every month and I am living a very spartan lifestyle. NYS is also going to mandate that I pay a $350 attorney registration fee in a few months. Lord knows where I am going to find the money to pay that.

Anonymous said...

I am not an attorney, but I have temped too. I feel your pain. I know that many of you do this to be able to do other things on the side and many of you come into it as good decent people.

But when you are treated the way you are you start turning into completely different people. I was also a nice person but with all the agency and law firm sodomization I became GHETTO myself.

Finally I got out of this business and I feel much better - and am back to being a civilized person.

I wish you all luck - and may God give you the strength to cope with agency pimps.

I also coined the nicknames Clovester, Cunty, Blackie Black, and others. Sadly, Wrinkled Shirts or Wrinkled Shirt Rudey (as in Rude manners) did not catch on like the others.
The problem with Recruiter, Coder and others is that, aside from being far from genuine, they just try too hard.

Anonymous said...

'Tis I, the Misanthrope in the Iron Bathtub again. I wanted to relate another anecdote about Wrinkled Shirts that someone told me. I can by no means certify the authenticity of this story other than stating it is what a trusted friend at the time told me he saw, and by stating that it seems to fit his character.
Word around the campfire had it that, one night something had to go out in the mail by midnight. Asshole came out with a manic look on his face, looking for someone to run to the post office to get it postmarked by midnight. Instead of politely, kindly if somone will do this errand, he says "Matt, you, I need you to run this to the post office, making sure it is postmarked ny midnight."
Such piggish behavior should inspire very dark, hateful feelings in ALL, tinged with homicidal mania--a longing to kill that can only barely be suppressed. I should only hope he is on the verge of being downsized. Think of the collective anger amd rage that his coworkers would feel for him.
Incidentally, I read another commentator state that he and Butta aka Cunty were in fact getting it on in the handicapped bathroom--the one featuring the "snot rocket hall of fame." While it was widely believed, bu not proven, there was a clandestine affair, I was unaware that it occured in the unisex bathroom. I would love to hear from that poster to learn more!

Simpson Thacher is holding widespread, unannounced layoffs at its New York City headquarters, causing considerable confusion and consternation for lawyers and staff there.
On Friday evening, Simpson Thacher cut between 10 and 20 staffers, targeting its document duplication staff. Monday morning, the firm fired a large, undisclosed number of receptionists.
More layoffs are expected today, and its unknown if attorneys will be affected.
Staffers are calling yesterday “Black Monday.” It seems the unannounced layoffs of the receptionists led to day-long chaos and confusion, as clients could not locate attorneys.

Blawgs are reporting that Cravath has been holding stealth layoffs of associates since December 2008, letting 25 lawyers go for “performance” reasons.

According to online sources, more layoffs are expected this month. Cravath has refused to comment.

Apparently this news is coming out because laid off associates are angry that Cravath will pay incoming 2009 associates $80,000 to defer to 2010.

Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP is based in New York City, with an additional office in London. The second oldest firm in the US, Cravath was founded in 1819.

Do any of you actually have experience with Axiom whether interviewing there or working there or hiring them? It seems like most of you have no idea what you're talking about (and I'm not an Axiom troll) - Axiom is quasi temp agency but they only hire mid to senior level attorneys with real experience, and place them on longer term projects as much as possible. It's an interesting model. I think it does translate to a temp agency model but a more stable one. And I am not sure about the whole "lifestyle" angle - some of their placements involve long hours during the week for many months, so it's only lifestyle if the placed attorney has the flexibility to just work or commute 12 hours per day all week then not work the weekend - I don't consider that lifestyle. But it IS an alternative type company. I don't know if it is or will be successful but at least it isn't the same old boring law firm concept with the insanely high overhead.

Anonymous said...

Axion is trawling in this website, predictably due to their image obsession.

Just go to www.axiomlegal.com to see how this temp agency is worse than any law firm in terms of mind control.

They have big overhead and charge very fat fat margins. Same as any law firm, except more B.S.

Anonymous said...

Axiom still cannot explain what it does except to promote an alternative lifestyle.

With all these "qualified substantive" lawyers flooded and jobless all over the street, what does Axiom do?

Nothing just another temp and placement agency for these unemployed huddled masses.

Anonymous said...

Why are Mark Harris and Alex Gettil of Axiom worse than any Davis Polk partner?

The Davis Polk partner at least rakes his big margin from being smart and contributing some knowledge to the associate's work.

In Axiom's case, they rake off a commission for contributing absolutely nothing substantive to the project or work.

Harris knows less than most temps and Gittel is not even an attorney.

So they make their big partner like margin for being a broker.

So Mr. Harris explain why your model is so much better for lawyers or for anyone other than your lazy self.

This might explain why such firms, like Goldman Suchs, recently outsourced a big chunk of their in-house legal departments to Axiom. These in-house counsel get thrown under the bus (with alluring Axiom promises of life "on the beach"), so that these firms can pay out record compensation to traders and the like and to also make such former in-house counsel more expendable.

I'm amazed at the vitriol on this blog.

I am guessing that a large set of folks go to law school for $$ and a little prestige (and nothing more). And a lot of these folks never grow in character through the tough passage of associate-land. They end up working for older versions of themselves: egotistical, money-grubbing folks of little nobility. They naturally resent the abuse, but fail to see themselves in the mirror of their bosses.

Hence, the vitriol

Axiom is another temp agency. I agree with one of the earlier comments about they contribute absolutely nothing for the final work product, do NOT offer a better lifestyle and deliver sub-standard offer packages to pad their bottom line profits. It is a very dark business model and sad for lawyers who must lower their standards to actually work for them. You are better off going to a real temp agency where they disclose the truth up front and you either take it or leave it. Axiom is not what it says it is-be careful.

fuck you all! and i mean that with love.

I heard the salaries they offer are almost insulting - especially to people who have agreed to work for them in the mid-west. I imagine they have a very high turnover rate.

HA someone told me that their friend, a 2011 Pace Law (Tier 4 law school) grad got a position with them without any significant experience. They get paid $25/h, which is sad- $25/hr?! and disturbing that a place like Axiom pretends to be something other than a sweatshop of contract lawyers.

I know this girl who went to Pace Law School and got her job through Axiom as a Temporary Paralegal at Bessemer Trust. Axiom is just another sweatshop- all she does is input data into Excel charts all day, what a joke.

My only knowledge of Axiom is that one of the attorneys that the firm holds out as having certain critical subject matter expertise is a know-nothing bimbo who got fired from my legal department for blowing a VP to get ahead and who took 6 tries to pass the bar. I don't know if her lack of legal talent is representative of all Axiom attorneys, but I'm never going to risk it to find out.

I had a horrific experience with Axiom over the past 4 months. I'm barred in CA, NY and FL. I have transactional practice in a law firm and 2 in house departments so I don't think experience is what I'm lacking.

I interviewed with Axiom 4 months ago for Axiom California. I checked in monthly when I didn't hear from them and was given the standard line "We are keeping you in mind for future opportunities" or ignored altogether. Thanks Ms. Lisa Thomas of Axiom for this lovely eff off email.

In a nutshell, folks, if you're an existing attorney at Axiom, good for you! If you are thinking of joining SAVE YOUR ENERGY AND YOUR TIME KIDS!...you are essentially a football safety waiting for another player to get injured so you get a chance to play and it may not happen for several seasons...except you're not getting paid to sit on that bench.

"There have not been any opportunities arise in CA that would be a good fit for you since we initially spoke. While we will continue to keep you in mind as things come up, we do prioritize our Active attorneys for incoming opportunities, and we cannot predict or guarantee a specific timeline for when those opportunities come along. As I mentioned on our call, we would continue with the recruitment process once there is an opportunity that comes along.

Given this, I would certainly recommend that you continue your job search outside of Axiom, especially since it sounds like you’re eager to get working – I completely understand where you’re coming from! We will continue to keep you in mind, but again, we cannot guarantee if or when an Axiom engagement will come along that is the right fit."
