Tower Legal - $18 per hour

"Tom, your website is awesome. it is very informative and funny. im a recent nyc tier 1 grad awaiting admission to the bar in ny and nj. i got a call from tower legal staffing offering me $18 per hour, since it is ajd/paralegal project. I declined. She pressured me telling me that it is the going rate for unadmitted JD's. I assumed she was lying, but either way, I felt it was exploitative, since my cleaning lady earns $15 per hour with zero education and zero student loans to pay off. I just thought I would share this with."

Unfortunately, she wasn't lying. JD rates (for those few that are lucky enough to be offered work) continue to fall through the teens, and admitted attorney rates are dropping to as low as $23 an hour straight time. The situation is certainly exploitative, as we discuss on here ad nauseam. Trying to support oneself on twenty bucks an hour, after taxes, student loan payments, and non-subsidized health insurance is nearly impossible. Furthermore, the work is oftentimes unsteady, the agencies are increasingly engaging in bait-and-switch techniques, the positions are truly dead-end in every sense of the word, and the working conditions are many times less than ideal. Welcome to hell.

Hell will really hit this poor soul after he gets "placed" at S&C and finds himself being tormented by Big Mamma. Imagine paying over a hundred grand to wind up in a dead end temp job, finding one being presided by the ghetto queen. Not only welcome to hell, welcome to the hood.

Anonymous said...

What are the rates at S&C and who staffs this special place? Do they farm it out to the legal profession's middleman retard class or hire on their own?

Do I need a dental plan? Does Lisa need braces?

Legal Options had the gall to offer me $16/hr - all this after my stellar education and bang-up Dana Buchman suit. I was like look, honey, I may be broke and starving and not able to get laser peels, but I will still NOT get out of bed for less than $30/hour. Holla, Linda Evangalista!

Gutter wages. There is really no future 3/4 of these newbie lawyers. Better to cut and run now, it only gets worse.

I wonder how Brooklyn law school will acount for the fact there is virtually no doc review to stash their debt crippled grads.

To quote

Brooklyn Law School will just lie and make up a number, like they did with the part time student numbers which they conveniently forgot to submit to US News.

The law school industry is just like this blog, totally unregulated and totally out of control.

Poor, poor Emily. She's at it again. I feel so sorry for her. This mutant creature probably grew up in the swamps of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi or one of those boorish backwater states and dreamt of coming to NYC and making it big and living the life I have lived since birth. She probably dreamt of women like me as she tossed and turned in her leaky trailer as a young girl and as her father felt her up. Then she came here and realized she didn't have the goods - so now she spends her time taking it out on black folk and minorities. Way to go Emily! Class Act! Why don't you put this energy into making your life better instead of putting down other people?

Anonymous said...

If you were a hot-shot lawyer living in a condo, what are you doing on this site - meant for poor, broke, temp lawyers. I would imagine you would have hot people to bang, important briefs to read, top-notch clients to meet - and workout at Reebok. I am unemployed hence here. Even if I was doing I simple coding "n^%$#" project I would be out doing things and banging people. I would certainly not be here. Sorry lady - your scam is up.

Anonymous said...

I have said before the agencies and firms can stick this rate because people will accept it. In New York the attitude is every man for himself. The problem with the Nigerians is they will "work" for any wage and the others know this and have to take what they get.

I would not work for less than $40 per hour. Think I can do better with a hot dog stand.

Emily, the state sheriff of Pensecola is looking for you. They found your bastard newborn strangled and suffocated in the dumpster --watch it girl!!

Anonymous said...

I'm sure you wouldn't think that way if you were black.

If that's your argument then why don't you substitute Nigger with Cracker or Honky?

Akshen said...

the infamous 65 Broadway project started you out @ $18/hour (though the rate went up to $25/hour if you stayed on for 6 months). it began during the 2003 jobless recovery when (like now) there were tons of out-of-work attorneys looking for anything. even during those shitty economic times, the turnover on the project was very high. so the agencies and BigLaw have pulled this kind of shit before.

Anonymous said...

Don't get me wrong I think the temp industry is a disgrace and very exploitative, but people dobn't have to be good little schoolgirls when faced with unfairness. I saw the temps cowering in fear and kissing ass during my 6-7 years of temp experience on many jobs. I am not blaming them; but it is part of the problem. I also think this kind of self-degradation can shorten your life span.

One caveat - I have seen experienced smart temps not complain but shop for jobs all day and jump for an extra $5. The stupid ones stay on for "the relationship".

Anonymous said...

I am going to interview as a recruiter. I know of a few BigLaw types who are now recruting - who and what I don't know - but at least they have a job. I met once such dame at Clutch - and while she was pretty useless in general, she was better to look at and talk to than the ghetto dames.

Jobless Recovery of 2003

Hughes Hubbard & Reed - $18 per hour, worksite was hot and smelled like a cesspool. Lisa Hart made S&C's Big Mamma look like Mary Poppins.

Paul Weiss- $17 per hour. Bug infestations, 80 hour weeks, had to relieve yourself next to smelly, defecating homeless bums, time which you had to deduct from your timesheets.

Can't wait for jobless recovery of 2010!

Anonymous said...

All it takes to be a recruiter is to suck some dick, flash your boobs, put ads on craiglist and shove some poor temps into the job. There's nothing to it - a sixth-grader could do it in this economy.

hell is where document reviewers live.. as an admitted attorney who has done 4 years of document review, my suggestion is to hang the shingle.. try to keep the law practice going while document reviewing if possible.. but get the law practice going at a minimum.. acting like a lawyer is why people went to law school.. constant document review can eat one's soul...

Anonymous said...

So funny, I interviewed with Tower a few weeks ago, and they went on an on about how they won't lower their rates below market like all the other agencies. Hmm...what happened? Also, if "all the other agencies" are dropping their rates, then that becomes the new market rate, and you are now paying above market.

Document Review is Ghetto. The only people who can survive it is genuinely unmotivated types. The rest of us get out after a few years of experimentation and finding out it's not the firm - it's the entire system that's crappy.

Anonymous said...

1:57 PM

Yes.

I don't criticize people for doing doc review (except Nigerian job stealers). But it's hard to do something else e.g. build a practice which would certainly be better in the long term with the long hours and prison conditions that temping entails.

It's the people's choice.

Doc review will ruin you though and make you a vegetable.

Emily said...

I will beat you so hard that you will mush into a vegetable in no time.

As law school tuition spirals out of control, good luck trying to hang a shingle. Furthermore, with the ABA cracking down on shitlaw loan modification work and the outsourcing of hundreds of entry-level legal positions, things are going to get precarious. The powers that be are setting up the ideal conditions for the creation of a neo-slave legal caste.

Another tech-worker, Diane Drozdowski, was forced out of her job at American Express in Phoenix, AZ. After her manager used "bully tactics and psychological warfare" to try to get her to quit, resulting in a mental breakdown, she was replaced by two Indian workers based in India. American Express flew these Indian workers to Phoenix and forced her to train them, upon threat of losing her severance pay.

Something really needs to be done. I'm sure anyone criticizing the importation of these non-citizen Indians will be branded a racist.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Big Mamma:

"For three years, I received exceptional reviews. Each year I was with the company, I received a better review than the previous year. That all stopped when an Indian woman took over the management roll for my team. She instituted monthly one-to-one sessions, which I thought would be a great way to provide me constructive and positive feedback to better my work and my career. That was definitely not the case. In each one-to-one I was met with her blatant hostility toward me. She picked apart everything I did and did not give me positive feedback. According to her, there was always something I should've done better and faster. I am admittedly a perfectionist, so I took her negative feedback very much to heart and tried harder than I ever had before in my life to meet and exceed expectations; whatever her expectations were, because I could never get her to tell me exactly what she expected."

As usual, the source of the wage pressures are corporate policy supported by government policy.

Anonymous said...

What galls me the most is that about one third of my income is taxed. I'm taxed on what I earn and taxed on what I spend.

Now that I'm in need there is nowhere to turn.

Nobody is helping me except for my contributions to my unemployment account.

Yet our leaders have found a way to bail out the very institutions that have put myself, and others, at risk.

Anonymous said...

Welcome to America, the land of dreams!!

Anonymous said...

They're simply exploiting the lag between recovery and recovery in the labor market.

The companies that now have credit are starting litigations they have on the back burner. However, the firms and companies haven't started rehireing in earnest. Thus, they know they can drop the wage and get takers for the next few months or so. They're also smart enough to know that they'll have a high turnover, so they'll staff short term projects.

Pretty smart if you ask me.

Give it 2-3 months and you'll see the more qualified attorneys fleeing the temp world. Hiring will pick up around then.

Also, things are drastically better than they were in January or Febuary. So cheer up things are improving, but it takes time.

For 32/hr, Sept. 18th

It's not as high as everyone might like, but still, nowhere near as ridiculous as 18/hr. Whether the posts are for real, who knows? But I refuse to believe "market rate" is 18 an hour.

Oh yea, Lisa needs braces.

Anonymous said...

Hanging out a shingle really isn't realistic for most people. It's difficult to get clients and you really do need an office. And after that, you need to know how much to bill and how to do the legal work. Each of those things is actually far harder than it sounds, at least it was for me, or is more expensive to start than you might be able to do right away, especially with student loans. You really need about a year's worth of expenses at the beginning, good luck getting that right out of law school, or even a few years afterwards.

The article ignored the facts that (1) contract attorney work can be rather lucrative, not only in monetary terms, but in terms of opportunities; and (2) many lawyers like contract attorney work, because of the freedom it allows (and again for the money it offers). She went on to say that they have not heard that the market is being scaled back in hiring, and that the outlook is good.

Don't saddle yourself w/ nasty debt from a 3rd tier school, if you can't make the Top 20, go to trade school instead, you'll be doing yourself and everyone else a favor! Together we can solve the problem of Glut in the legal industry!

Anonymous said...

I'm a long reader of this blog, but have never posted. I finished top half of my class at a tier one and made the bad decision to get stuck doing doc review, which I did for several years (NYC).

I definitely think that the industry is over. My advice is to get out now!!! Soloing is very hard in most markets. Student loan debt is crippling. Its also true that that we're in the "overqualified" category. I know this from experience trying to find basic jobs in which they looked at my JD and passed me over, with a look on their faces that clearly said "what's your problem man? Why are you applying for this?".

We all need an exit strategy and I think it's damn difficult. Barring something like luck, doc review for long periods of time will destroy your resume.

Please, everyone, just stop doing it, or do it with a plan in mind. What the plan is will vary, but doc review is the very definition of a dead-end job.

Peace and good luck.

MUAMMAR AL-GHADDAFI SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PUT HIS TENT ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE AND SLAUGHTER GOATS THERE!!!

There will be no jobs in America for the foreseeable future. Despite all this talk about recovery, net jobs are still being pulled from the economy at a large clip. While the bloodletting is not as serious as it was earlier in the year, jobs are still being lost.

Not only do we have to stop losing jobs, but we have to start adding them, and we have to start adding them fast to make up for the tidal wave of jobs that were lost during the Great Recession and to keep pace with all those people entering the work force. Can this accomplished? I doubt it. It will take years (maybe even a decade) to reach a proper equilibrium in the labor force. Meanwhile, thousands will begin to lose their unemployment benefits by the end of the year.

Most doc reviewers' resumes throw up HUGE red flags to HR deptartments at non-legal firms and companies. Who wants to hire someone who's done 12 different temp gigs in 2 years? I've been asked "Gee, you never got a permanent offer from any firms?" Outisde the cult of doc review, no one understands that legal temping is NEVER temp to perm, like most temp gigs are in non-legal industries.

And its been said a million times here and elsewhere that a JD/bar license is useless outside of law. It impresses no one and is more a hinderance than a help.

Dear Doc Review Chimp: you are so cute. You need more Monkey Chow. What's going to happen? Baby Chimp, its going to be bad. If you have relatives in the heartland, I suggest that you make haste to go to them next year 2010 when the shakeout begins. You will need to be somewhere where you can hunt, fish, and garden. If you don't have these skills, hopefully you have a relative that does and can teach you.

btw - cracker & honkey don't have the same impact as "nigger" - there is no comparison. Can't think of a term that has the same impact as "nigger" . Maybe if we used the hated word more it would no longer have such impact BUT it would be too hard on those who are injured by it.

The most entitled person in the world is Barack Hussein Obama,
The consequence is he only talks down other people and loves himself.

Obama: an awful human being.

Also he considers himself to be African and a brother of Ghaddafi. If not he should have told him he is an American and proud of it. But instead he said how bad America is.

Which is why foreigners are not allowed to be president under the Constitution.

I think the people here telling people to get out of doc review are overestimating the majority of temps doing this line of work. Only about 10% in my view could do something else, i.e. work for a government, a law firm, or do solo practice. The other 90% are doing it because of utter inability.
Please note I am saying there is a BIG RANGE of ability in the doc review world, but most of it in the lower range (Nigerians the bottom of the barrel).

If I wear provocative clothes to the temp firm to hook a partner, I get a call from the agency. So how do you hook up with people on the job with the agency police?

Allowing that piece of crap terrorist who was complicit in the blowing up of a jumbo jet (who then recently held a party celebrating it) into a city where thousands of people were murdered by fanatical terrorists is incomprehensible. Every New Yorker should go out of their way to spit on that disgusting piece of human scum.
