Help Wanted: Assist Office Tiger In Outsourcing American Jobs Overseas

"Tom,

Here is an interesting job opportunity that was posted on craigslist this morning:

"Serve as a Records Analyst to one of our global clients for a major records management initiative relating to our client’s safety, health and environmental documents. The goal of this project is to identify, review, index and categorize these records in accordance with new records categories being developed by the client. The scope of this project will include all of our client’s plant sites in the United States and has an unknown duration, but approximately 1-2 years. This position will be responsible for visiting plant sites and identifying, reviewing, indexing and categorizing applicable documents at such plant sites. We are looking for an individual that is willing and able to travel each week to various client sites for document review. This travel would be US based only."

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/lgl/1351296089.html

Don't be fooled! The ad says that you will be working for RR Donnelley, which is a respected business print company. If you do a little research, you will learn who you are really working for, none other than that bottom feeding LPO firm known as Office Tiger. Office Tiger is hiding behind the respected name of a large American Fortune 500 company. Why aren't they using their own name? Can someone please call Lou Dobbs? If I could venture a guess, you will be collecting documents so that they can be sent back to India to be reviewed by low wage, unlicensed professionals."

Editor: Why did DuPont select OfficeTiger as opposed to another company?

Romero: Much of the work we were interested in outsourcing, such as document review and coding to capture basic content information and to make preliminary privilege and confidentiality calls is not rocket science but does require some judgment. Accordingly, we selected a supplier with a focus on and experience with judgment-based work. Personally, I was very impressed by their management team, their personnel and facilities in India and their energy. It helped that they have a proven track record with an impressive client base. Although the bulk of that client base is not in the legal arena, it includes the who's who of investment banks, other Fortune 500 companies and many law firms.

Editor: How would you describe their workforce?

Romero: All of the people I met at OfficeTiger are highly educated and fluent in English, and I understand that those qualities are found throughout its Indian workforce. One of the things I found most attractive about the prospect of doing business with them is the quality of the people they can get to do what is basic, commodity type of work such as document coding. It is my understanding that their legal support staff in the Philippines is of equally high quality.

Catanzaro: Some of the managerial level attorneys in the Philippines have gone to U.S. law schools and are admitted to practice in the U.S. The level of education of the OfficeTiger workforce in India and the Philippines is at least as high as that of the people who do the same type of work in the U.S.

Today is the 70th Anniversary of FALL WEISS, the German invasion of Poland. Too bad the good guys lost. Buchanan writes that Hitler did not really want war, and he makes some valid points.

http://www.vdare.com/buchanan/090831_hitler.htm

How many of today's ills, from the lunacy of multiculturalism and the false ideal of diversity (which really just means less white) to unbridled greed and corruption, vastly overrepresented by a certain bloodcult, to the breakdown of the family, to the proliferation of vices that reach a level of profigacy, from illicit drugs to hyper-promisicutiy, were foreseen by far-right ideology, most notabily national socialism.
Hitler may not have wanted war, but it seems he is having his revenge from beyond the grave and this pitiful country is becoming a third world cesspoll. GOD DAMN AMERICA! GOTT STRAFF ENGLAND! GOTT STRAFF AMERIKA!

The ABA is the entity that cleared the way for what appears to me to be the unlicensed practice of law using nonlicensed foreign lawyers. We need to have the DOJ investigate this and consider indicting some ABA honchos for these shenanigans.

Anonymous said...

It's time to end the ABA's monopolistic stranglehold on the legal profession.
Meanwhile, the Posse List is promoting "e-discovery certificates". That is exactly what is needed for collapsing, outsourced profession, idiotic certificates.

No, we need to strip the ABA of its authority and replace it with a new group that repredents us.

The ABA Journal started deleting comments regarding this outsourcing issue. I guess the "legal rebels" are afraid to discuss a topic that is offensive to their corporate sponsors.

Oprah is a dipshit.

After all she has gotten from America, she should be helping American blacks OUR CITIZENS who live in and fight for this country and go to our churches and schools, not going to fucking Africa!

She is also a bitch to teach American blacks that these Nigerian job stealers are their brothers.

Just like biglaw. They import cheap foreign labor and claim that they are doing African Americans a favor by touting their diversity.

Your name appeared among the beneficiaries who will receive a part-payment of US$21.5 million and has been approved already for months. You are requested to get back to me for more direction and instruction on how to receive your fund. However, we received an email from one Dr. Robert Walter who told us that he is your next of kin and that you died in a car accident last week. We want to hear from you before we can make the transfer to confirm if you are dead or not.

Sounds like a paper Tiger to me...

How utterly base. I believe the job in the posted pays around $18000 per year.

Dear (now) fellow doc reviewers:

Just stopping in to say that I am a separated (former) BIGLAw Associate who has now sunk so low that I am willing to do document review work. I had over 8 years Associate experience and just got placed on an assignment with a major investment bank paying over $60 an hour. I note this because I know at least 4 other folks on that project and they all went to T20 law schools and have major law firm experience.

I imagine that there are also former BIGLAW folks doing basement level doc review projects for $30 an hour. This is what has become of this niche. On the bright side, I think things do pick up into 2011. Yes 2011, not 2010, that is if we can all lmake it until then. Good luck,

I can't believe anyone would be so short sighted as to outsource anything to India. I have to deal regularly with 'highly educated' people of this sort in my role as a real support professional (for a US company, ironically enough). What typically happens is this:
- US company outsources to India
- Indians get a problem, but don't have the first clue what to do, or seemingly any inclination to learn how to do it, so call support.
- Support eventually stops trying to help after trying to get someone to perform a simple cut and paste operation for the 100th time and after 90 minutes on the phone, an does it for them.
- Net result; BigCorp A, pays peanuts by outsourcing jobs to DumbIndians & Co., who in turn get SupportCorp back in the US to *actually* do the work for free.

Those who believe India has anything to offer the outsourcing world are delusional.

Dude, OfficeTiger was bought out by RR Donnelley two years ago. No hiding going on - it just doesn't exist any more.

Anonymous said...

With a whopping 42 seconds of research, consisting of looking up RR Donnelley on Wikipedia, I determined that RR Donnelley bought Office Tiger in 2007: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RR_Donnelley.

So, if you work for Office Tiger, you work for Donnelley.

I'm an 8th year at an AmLaw100 firm. I check in here about twice a year as a matter of course to learn what I can from as many sources as possible about the undercurrents in the US legal industry. I do that because it is in my self-interest to know what is going on in my field at all levels.

I generally leave this site feeling pretty damn secure in my job, precisely because of posts like this. I'm spending my Friday night on this site reading about my industry when I'm pretty secure in my job. Chicken or egg. I'm pretty secure in my job probably because I spend Friday nights either working or doing things that help me to work better. You might prefer to spend your Friday nights differently, but, if you do, don't bitch that you don't have my job.

Meanwhile, whoever wrote this original post was in too much of a hurry to whinge to do the 42 seconds of research necessary to figure out who owned Office Tiger. Pathetic.

WhatEVER amount of money that person is paid is too much to do ANYthing. I don't give a shit what degree they have or how much debt they incurred. Not my problem. The author of this post is sloppy, lazy and can't write a blog entry without screwing it up in such a fundamental way that the humane thing to do would be to take this blog post (not the person, just the person's blog post) behind the barn and bludgeon it to death with a shovel.
