17 Hour Workdays

From the Clutch Group. Smart solutions. No borders.

"We are looking to staff an HOUR INTENSIVE document review project starting IMMEDIATELY! Interviews will start today!

Must be able to interview with our client in Midtown today. Further, the hours will be intensive! We are looking at a 17 hour per day schedule, from 7:00am to 12:00am (midnight) for ten days straight. This may change, but if you are interested in this project YOU MUST confirm that you can work these hours. Interviews will be held today, and the client may even need you to begin work immediately after. Thus, you must be able to begin work immediately and the 7am-12am schedule will probably begin Saturday (you will need to work straight through the weekend into next week)."

Make it through the project without going into cardiac arrest or being carried off into the insane asylum, and you might very well be the grand prize winner who is able to ward off the foreclosure/eviction Grim Reaper for another month or two. Don't forget, the Republicans will not authorize unemployment extensions starting November 30th. Happy Holidays, in advance!

Welcome back, Tom. It is an honor to be the first to post a response.

I just saw this ad under Craigslist. It was posted at 4:59pm. I thought it was a joke, but maybe not.

Isn't it interesting how they know the hours but not the rate? Of course, by starting the project on Saturday, they don't have to pay overtime for the first week.

Sadly, I know several people who could work 14 hour days for 10 days straight. It truely is a race to the bottom.

Think about this for a minute. Over the course of ten days, one needs to work 170 hours out of a possible 240 hours. If you need to commute to the worksite/sweatshop, you are looking at 4 hours of sleep a day - at most!

If you have a sick kid, or other obligations, you are out of the running for this "prestigious position." What is sad is that this project will be staffed - even though no mention is made of the hourly rate. Yes, what a vibrant economy we have, right?! People with 7 years of higher education and professional licenses are willing to take on such dreck.

One wonders whether the slave doc review chimps will even be permitted to take lunch or restroom breaks.

This should be reframed: From the Clutch Group. Smart solutions. No borders.

To the reality: From the Clutch (the hand rails) Group. Bend over. No vaseline.

Some shithead associate mismanaged the discovery process so now there is an emergency. Their lack of planning will become some coder's problem.

At Clutch you will be clutching yourself because they won't let you go to the toilet.
What's going on at Update they usually have lots of sewer work inb their pipeline.

Women you will need to hold on to your clutch (purse) as this company highway robs you.
Men you will have to hold on to the clutch as Clutch drives you off the cliff to your death from 24hr workdays. Was the week's pay worth it?

Anonymous said...

I hope they pay a princely sum because not many out of shape and mentally ill lawyers I know can withstand working 17 hours a day for 10 straight days. A project like this will probably cost you some sick leave as well as post traumatic stress.

Anonymous said...

I think it's one of those projects where the coders smear shit on the floor and jerk off in the three stall bathroom.

Have fun with it, y'all!

Anonymous said...

What a complete and utter rip-off for the client. There is no way anyone can see straight, let alone code properly during a 17 hour day.

Anonymous said...

I bet all the newbies will be emailing this outfit saying "hire me" please. I beg of you. I can think like a lawyer. I have done doc review once before for robert Half.

Before I wised up I went to an interview with Clutch group. Rearranged my day to make a next day interview for a job to start immediately. Well after tons of paperwork, downtown middle-of-day parking, some back room tucked in a rabbit warren hotel, and a bs interview it turned out they didn't even have a contract to do the job they advertised for. Apparently their idea of fun is to line up personnel and then wait to hear if their client is going to proceed. Don't bother!

You know who needs this boot camp -the maniacal Jewish Shrew I work with. An ex-Big Law Associate, now a measly TEMP at my firm, sitting in the mailroom with ghetto staffers and a five-year old used laptop. Despite all this, she goes on and on about how she worked at BigLAw, and managed gazillions of stupid temp attorneys. She was one of those who cut off internet access, denied bathroom breaks and screamed at people who had a helluva lot more class and education than her PMS-ass. She could really learn a thing or two about life if she was thrust into this project. Besides I need to get this bitch out of my hair before I wack her with my Louboutins.

People over on JDU actually are complaining that people aren't all over this and can see that it'd be a problem.

If you own your own business or have a prestigious job long work days make sense. But long work days for a temp gig that you'll probably have problems getting paid the full amount from anyway? That's pretty stupid.

Anonymous said...

I would die for any gig at Clutch. Please gimme the job!
I have been trying to keep up the facade of being a successful J.D.
But I am living and eating out of a garbage can.
I stopped paying back my student loans and credit cards 2 yrs. ago.

I can convince others that I have a successful solo career going while doing work as a doc review attorney. That's why I will never understand the meaning of an oxymoron.

NYC Doc Review CLE said...

All:

I am working to put together a free or low-cost CLE program for Temporary / Contract Attorneys in NYC.

At the moment, we're looking at some of the following programs:

eDiscovery Basics
Several practical programs by platform vendors
Privilege & Confidentiality
Conflicts / Ethics for Contract Attorneys
Finance and Banking Law
Patent / IP Law
Real Estate Law
Drug and Device Law
Healthcare Law
Employment Law
Federal eDiscovery Update

It looks like we would be limited to around 100 people, unless I can locate a larger venue.

The goal would be to schedule 12-16 hours over two days, with some sort of networking event. Possibly even an organized hour for discussing various agencies and employers in the area.

Are there any topics or instructors you might suggest?

Hey 3:32 ... and all prospective temp doc reviewers ...

Here's all you need to know:
what are the best agencies? Answer: none of them.
what are the worst agencies? Answer: all of them
what are the best firms to temp at? Answer: none of them.
what are the worst firms to temp at? Answer: all of them.
What do I need to know to get a doc review gig? Answer: show a pulse and be able to spell your name.

I signed up for the military. These temp gigs were enough to get me to do so.

The sane ones are plotting their way out, or have already done so.

The ones remaining are those who have no hope, or are too lazy, or too crazy, or all of the above.

It says something when some bitch says she doesn't want to be a litigator and purports to be a "business lawyer" doing tasks that a Mumbai monkey can do in an hour and still convince herself that she is on the path to success. That, my friends, is a future, suitcase-dragging cautionary tale.

And I'm sure some of the fucks who you've temped alongside with are happy that you did. It means they get a couple more breadcrumbs.

Anonymous said...

@2:12

The sane ones are the ones who never went to law school. And for everyone just remember this: there is nothing you can do that somebody Bombay can't do cheaper. The only limitations are technological and procedual and those barriers will be broken in time.

While America's suit clad flood of J.D.'s are living on the street and begging for doc review at lower and lower rates, India is booming and better quality. So the J.D. temps can talk about how much better they are all they want but they are living out of a garbage can.
So "prestige" and "unique" to have a doctor of law degree from USA.
Obama is in India begging for business deals there too and asking for jobs from Indian companies. Another J.D. who is going hat in hand to India!
All J.D. voted for Obama so now cannot deny. You will either work in India or be on food stamps.

Anonymous said...

I am unique.
I have a J.D. degree.
This is like a Ph.D.
I know how to think like a lawyer and had to do a law note with lots of footnotes. Not every person can achieve this.
The US needs more law schools.

I have a private practice out of my apartment in Brooklyn.
Can anyone tell me if attorney advertising helps? Which works? I have tried Internet search hits but it hasn't bought in anything.
Does it really help business to rent a cadillac and to have an office address that looks impressive? I am willing try, but don't want to spend a lot of money if clients won't be flowing in.
Thanks!

I was just watching a piece on TV about soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They posted 5 red flag symptoms of PTSD on the screen:

1. Depression
2. Anxiety
3. Insomnia
4. Alcohol Abuse
5. Drug Abuse

So I went 5 for 5. I batted a fucking thousand. Perfect score. Twelve years ago I enjoyed life and was the picture of health. Not anymore. And don't kid yourselves golden boys and girls at the top of this bullshit game. You will not beat the odds. So, readers of Tom the Temp, what's your batting average?

I always say that the biggest beneficiaries of law schools are NEVER the law graduates, but the law firms and other employers of law graduates.

Another beneficiary of law schools is the faculty and the administration running the law schools.

In this capitalistic society, why would the law school industry in general make the law graduates the biggest beneficiaries, when the people running the law industry are law firms, employers of law graduates, and the faculty??

As a corollary, college education in the US mainly benefits corporate America, who are the employers of college graduates. Education in America produces workers for corporate America, not citizens for the society.

All of these temp agencies and their clients are violating the NYS wage and hours laws. Document reviewers need to get together and hire a militant employee's rights law firm to pursue both complaints to relevant agencies and class action suits (where fees may be recoverable form the proceeds). Also, it is time for a document reviewers union (or try CWA or IWW) and strike action across the board with all agencies and their sweatshop clients.
