In Case You Missed It.....

Above the Law did a story on our friend DiscoverReady, yesterday.

"The Charlotte Observer reports that a legal services firm is poised to hire 100 Charlotte based attorneys:

Unfortunately, we're talking about document review attorneys:

DiscoverReady, which analyzes e-mails and electronic documents for law firms and corporate legal departments, is opening the office on Trade Street uptown in mid-June. The company has already hired about two dozen workers and will hire others in waves throughout the year, said Jim Wagner Jr., DiscoverReady's chief executive officer."

Surely, truly awful jobs are better than no jobs, but several commenters point out just how awful working for DiscoverReady can actually be:

"This is the temp job from hell. DiscoverReady and Shawn Treadwell at Strategic Legal repeatedly lied to the contract attorneys about the job, assuring us that we would start working the next day, then telling us at the last minute that there would be no work tomorrow. I quit the project, and still haven't been paid a month later. You're better off being unemployed."

"Don't get your hopes up. After being out of work for months following law school, I signed on with DiscoverReady to do doc review. I worked for 4 days, was told I did a good job, then never heard from them again. The pay rate is good, but not if you work 4 days every 6 months. I got a real job finally and then got an email asking if I was interested in working again, 6 months after having worked. Didn't bother replying."

"I have to add that when I asked the project manager at DiscoverReady (Andrew Mayer) if I could print out the timesheet that Strategic Legal had emailed me, he told me that I couldn't use their printers, but if I needed to print something, I could go to the Kinko's down the street."

DiscoverReady temps jobs are a horrible way to make a living, but an excellent way for the government and law school industry to mask how truly staggering and dismal the job market really is.

As I am often first on my project, I too am first for this batch of comments.

Also note that I was selected by Discoveready for the Charlotte project, but unfortunately for the Charlotte economy (as I would have spent copious amounts of my disposable coder $ there), I had to turn them down. The pay was simply appalling.

Better Coder

You are a sad loser! You work all the time because no one wants to hang out with you. Still, I think your geeky clean-cut picture is kinda hot!! Call me, Baby Boy!!

Wow!! DiscoverReady sounds like a Vietnamese sweatshop! Where U.S. barred attorneys will be treated like some THIRD WORLD KID. Way to go U.S., way to go.

Not letting an attorney print a timesheet -- what the fuck??? Who are these people???

This was bad form to ask the client to use the Xerox machine. I follow the philosophy that temps should always be seen, not heard. I always allow my job candidates to make copies at my office, but they should never ask the client.

I understand this post is on the topic Discoveready. I can help but see those 100 jobs besieged with a 1000 applicants from new grads from the following schools:
1)Campbell University
2)Duke University School of Law
3)University of North Carolina School of Law
4)North Carolina Central University School of Law 5)Wake Forest University School of Law
plus newly accredited law schools in the area:
+ Charleston School of Law(tech in SC, but a close new TTT)
6) Charlotte School of Law
7) Elon University School of Law
8) One unaccredited start up. It's located in the Eastern part on state.
Does NC need 8 Law schools, F**K no! The ABA accreditation process is a bad joke. Sorry! stepping of soap box.

you do have a point, 8 law schools for a state with the population that North Carolina has is kinda crazy.
In addition, people have ALOT lower incomes in that part of the country than they do in the Northeast, so trying to payback those loans is even more insurmountable.
Having said that Carolina (in-state tuition makes this school a steal if you are lucky enough to get in and be from NC), Duke and Wake are very well regarded law schools whose graduates get hired nation-wide. NCCU is "OK" for local and in state stuff, plus it is dirt freak'in cheap to go there, the other schools are a joke though, and instead of charging tuition to go to Campbell or Elon, they should pay people to go to class there.

I was on craiglist searching for a job, and I found this. I am seriously considering killing myself. Fuck you, law school. I lost several years of my youth, and am now 150K debt, and the only thing out there is free suicide prevention seminars. IF THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T DO ITS FUCKING JOB AND ARREST MY LAW SCHOOL DEAN FOR FRAUD, I AM GOING TO GO DOWN TO THE SCHOOL AND PUT HANDCUFFS ON HIM MYSELF.

"Are you out of work or feeling trapped in your job? Unsure what to do next? Therapist, also a lawyer, is starting FREE support groups specifically for lawyers. Don't be isolated with this. Come and talk about your frustrations and difficulties with others, network, get ideas. Its one hour of your week with no commitment to come more than one time. Please e-mail with your details and/or any questions. Pre-screening required as groups will take place at the offices of a private psychoanalytic and psychotherapy institute near the Time-Warner building at Columbus Circle."

Anyone else notice that Binder & Binder had to update their recent ads for Jr Advocates on Craiglist by adding "Attorneys Need Not Apply." I guess unemployed attorneys flooded them with resumes.

BC,

I was just selected for a federal job today with the Obama Administration! The pay is $73K, and within 2-3 years goes up to about 104K.

Yay!! Freed of temping forever!!!

Shawn Treadwell is a perfect mascot for the temp industry. A lying, deceitful sleazebag.

Congrats on the government job. Much better than this.

Talk to the temps they find every excuse for why they can't or won't find a real job. It's depressing talking to them. They are their own worst enemies.

Maybe they are temmping to do other things...ashole

The temps who work for DiscoverReady are mostly a bunch of sad sacks who are so desperate and beaten down that they think it is NORMAL to be treated like dirt. They're the sort of people who would not only go to Kinko's and pay for the privilege of printing their time sheets, they'd feel lucky to be allowed to leave the office. Unsurprisingly, these people graduated from the worst law schools in America (Charlotte Law, Howard, NC Central, etc.). This is as good as their careers are gonna get.

john b. needs to quiet down...he chats with his galpal (the other staff atty/assoc?) non-stop regarding non-work related matters way too much which makes for an unsuitable work environment..what he should do if he wants to chat is simply go into the hallway and talk to her there if he really wants drama

This posting sounds eerily like Alana Dasent at Synergy Legal. Whenever one calls her and sends a resume to register with the agency, she generally tells you, "If she likes your resume, she will then call you for a phone interview. (WTF is there not to like about a contract atty's resume?)" After waiting six months and getting no phone call, I submitted another resume for a project in which she stated she was desperately seeking 32 attorneys to start a project in the next three days. She sends me an enthusiastic sounding e-mail @ 10:35 p.m. that same night I e-mailed my resume, stating that she will call me the next day for my long-awaited phone interview! The next day, I spent over $7.00 printing out the employment and tax forms @ Kinko’s, faxed my completed forms to her, all-the-while waiting for her non-existent phone call so that I could finalize things in anticipation of starting the project 3 days later. I then gave her a call to see if she had received my fax, when I got the obligatory, " Who's calling?" from the receptionist (of course you know at this point, she had found her 32 attorneys and you are fuq'd) and of course I then had the pleasure of talking to the voicemail. What pisses me off about the whole situation is that she could have simply called and relied on 32 attorneys whom she either already knew, or who were already registered instead of getting my hopes up about possibly starting a 2-3 month project with an agency that I had already written off. I'm thinking about going downtown and smacking her and making her reimburse me for the money I spent at Kinko’s, plus my subway fair to get to and from there. Alan Desent's black ass should get the hack recruiter of month award! Fuqing whore!

9:51 Don't take this personally. It happens all the time. I have an excellent resume and it happens to me all the time as well. Temping is just a numbers game. If the slots are full, even if by jackasses, they are full - unless one of those fuckers is kicked out. Then you could be in.

Seriously, temping has very little to do with ability and A LOT to do with just lotto luck and SUCKING A LOT OF ICKY RECRUITER PUSSY!!

As you may have seen a lot of ghetto people on assignments that would not even have made it as a janitor at Mickey D's. Just because they are "friends" of the recruiter.

I heard that the worst ABA accredited law schools in America are "Ave Maria" in Michigan, followed by the "New England School of Law" in Massachusetts, and "Thomas Jefferson" in San Diego.

You've heard of shitlaw. Welcome to fucklaw. These schools are supposedly so bad, you'd probably do better investing in becoming a heroin addict than getting a degree at one of these schools.

The Yuppie Attorney said...

Ava Maria has relocated to a town south of Tampa Florida. Florida now has 9 Law schools. Cooley Law School has taken over Ava Maria's former buildings in Michigan. Cooley plans on opening a branch campus at Ava MAria's former location.

A sounding from the Florida and Michigan Lawyers: "DOES EITHER FLORIDA OR MICHIGAN NEED MORE LAW SCHOOLS?" (RESPOND)

I worked with a number of recruiters in I.T.. Please don't think they use any kind of resume file system. They may hold onto your resume a month. After one month, they toss them. If they get a project; they then send in the resumes they solicited for each individual project. It's grab a resume and submit it to the client till the project's requisition body count is filled. After the project is underway, they start to weed people out. They weed out people till they have a skeleton staff. When the project comes to be renewed the start putting people back in. It's a cycle.

If you get a recruiter to like you; they may just keep you I mind when a project comes or turn you over fast after a project terminates.

Recruiters have to slut themselves to the clients and expect to be eaten out by potential temps who want to work for them. Practice that tongue action.
