Dine Group Drops the "F-Bomb" On Contract Attorneys

The Dine Group is still up to their old tricks of fishing for rate information from attorneys and trying to lowball the competition. A friend also recently told me that she overheard one of the business managers of the company scream: "Fuck them! They are under contract for $25 and easily replaceable. We'll ghost them if necessary." I guess some of the foolish attorneys who signed on for that assignment spoke up after the fact only to be blacklisted. Blacklisted for $25/ hr? Really? So Sad!

If you have the time and desire help student loan reform, which will shift IBR from 15 percent to 10 percent of income over 25 years before loan forgiveness (they were also considering shifting it from 25 years to 20 years but I think that was eliminated), reduce the deficit by 10 billion, reduce impact of private loan companies as a factor in student loans, etc. Research the bill and contact your representative if you believe this will help you, which if you are like me and have student loans- it will help.

More competition, less paying jobs:

LONDON - The College of Law has unveiled a new course that will enable students to sit the New York Bar exam. From September, students sitting the full-time Graduate Diploma in Law programme who go on to complete either the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) will be able to take the New York Bar Exam after an additional 22-week study programme.

The programme, which includes electives in US business and securities law, will be available either at one of the College's London centres or, subject to negotiations, in the US at the Northwestern University Law School in Chicago, with which the College of Law has formed a strategic partnership.
Those successfully completing the course will be awarded a US-style College of Law Juris Doctor (JD) degree in law, enabling them to sit the New York Bar exam. The New York State Court of Appeals and the New York State Board of Law Examiners have approved the arrangement, which will be open to both UK and US students.

Commenting on the new course, College of Law chief executive Nigel Savage (pictured) told Legal Week: "The qualification will be broadly equivalent to a US LLM and will allow our graduates the choice to qualify in both UK and US law. The programme will also attract the very best overseas students to the College, helping to sustain London as a legal services and legal education hub."

The Dine group sucks.

They changed all their management in 2007 but their M.O. is still the same, to be the low payer in the market. That's why they get a lot of work from the city.

Also Tom EP Dine is famous for bouncing checks. I know of two people who had this happen. And Dine said, "Look it happens. Don't lose your life over it."

EP Dine, the dud check low paying nasty bitches of 57th Street Galleria building.

Now has plenty of stupid fresh meat due to overproduction and underemployment of lawyers.

Kelly Law is another pain to work with. A friend worked with them a few months ago and their new online web system to enter in teamsheets was not set up properly. He entered his time in for the week expecting to be paid on time but his check got delayed for several weeks because the online system did not submit his time. He lost a lost of weight eating beans and crackers.

The mere existance of the poster named Baxter Davenport III and his John Connelly like likeness along with the content of his posts (be they merely schtick or not) prove this.

His posts, be they jest or not, epitomize the attitude of those who control lawland (you should already know who they are...wink...wink....i.e. Davnepor's kind and also those who think that Bernie Madoff is worse to his peeps than Adolph Hitler...god, why? Worse than Adolph? Hmmmm...I wonder why...Hmmm...a murderer of 6 million vs a guy who beat them, his own peeps, at their own game of exploitation using their supposed kinship as his entre....and the guy who killed 6 million is viewed more favorably...) towards all of lawland's proles.

To lawland's overlords, you are all mud people to be rendered useless and scorned at every turn.

Don't worry the Brits won't be coming over the USA any time soon.

How many English lawyers have you met in the US?
Why?
Because it is much better in their own country, they make more money, and don't allow outsourcing and foreign lawyers.
They let ex colonials like African mud people take their silly exam but don't let them work, and no Brit would use them anyway.

Britain is 80% white and has no pretensions about having to let the rest of the world work there.

Also they don't have that many lawyers compared to slum US.

EP Dine loves to black list people and bounces checks. They also love to tell you the problems with your resume and how there is a "new market" for rates, i.e. always lower and lower.

It is a badge of honor to be blacklisted by agencies. It means you actually stand for something.

Imagine a 1920s seamstress being blacklisted for asking for better working conditions. She would be hailed as a heroine today.

Today blacklisted legal eagles are tomorrow's heroes.

This is hearsay..."a friend told me". Have the guts to source it factually. Goes to credibility. I don't get the point. If they offered $25 at the outset, and someone accepted the $25, then what is the problem e.g. contract was offered and accepted. Do you really think they were suddenly moving fromn $25 to $35? The terms were explicit. Was the Dine exec really off mark, in reality? The pay is outrageous, thus, why was it accepted?

Dine, this isn't a court of law and hearsay is valid evidence. Many things are heard from a friend. Why don't you show why it's not true you F-ing scumbags!

As for lawyers being creepy and sleazily undercutting each other and taking whatever low wage job comes along, I'm afraid that's more than true.

Let's face it, the doc review model is just a dead model. The alleged profession of law, the staffing agencies (perm and temp) have not adapted to the new reality. They keep churning the same old wheel, and with no results. That is called insanity. None of the recruiters really had to do anything except make phone calls to their inside contacts at law firms e.g. maybe a few expensive lunches. So, one should not be surprised that each and everyone are on their "way out". They were made redundant by the profession itself and changing needs in the industry. So, just what will they do now?

Anonymous said...

The agencies hags have been outsourced with the rest of us. At least they got us work back in the old days.

Stroock & Stroock & Lavan had another down year in 2009, according to a report from The AM Law Daily. Profits per equity partner fell to $1.067 million from $1.185 million in 2008 and gross revenue declined to $263 million in 2009, a five percent decrease from the $277 million brought in the previous year.

Stroock’s executive director, Harvey Brown, said that the hiring of 11 new lateral partners in 2009 negatively affected the financials of the firm, which is typically conservative with its lateral hires. He added that there are no plans for further layoffs at the firm. Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP is based in New York City, with approximately 350 lawyers in three offices, including Miami and Los Angeles. It was founded in 1876.

Anonymous said...

The ABA Journal has confirmed with Dewey & LeBoeuf that the firm laid off 30 administrative staff members today. These layoffs occurred in the firm’s Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, D.C. offices. Dewey & LeBoeuf told The ABA Journal that “these changes are made necessary by an overall reduction in lawyer headcount.” There was a 10% reduction in equity partners last year; PPP and revenue per lawyer increased while gross revenue declined by 11.3%.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of what some bloggers are representing about just completing great long-term project paying OT, fact is that is a misrepresentation. Indeed, there are sporadic projects here and there staffed by recruiters "favorites", if they haven't been taken in as a sort of permanent staff attorney in a law firm. Unforunately, most of these positions are being filled in a sort of "clubby way" and there seems to be a bit of preference along with racial lines....heh, just friends taking care of friends. That's fine, but the real point is there is nothing out there. Find something else to do.

Anonymous said...

Just interacted with an agency for the first time in two years. They are even psychotic than they were before.

Anonymous said...

Thanks 3:51

Anonymous said...

There are some decent small projects out there paying well. The agencies have a lot of candidates to choose from however and are generally picking their favorites who have a proven track record. Top pedigree doesn't necessarily make a good reviewer, you'd be surprised how bad some of the cast off associates are. Generally, they want people who have a proven track record of producing clean work in a consistent and timely manner, and someone who doesn't carry drama and gets along well with others.

Anonymous said...

I know several people on projects right now. Some are good coders. Some could not give a shit. EIther way, since they know projects are thin, both good and bad coders are stretching their work. Just like before, it is not about the work. It is about the recruiter liking you. Anyone delusional enough to believe otherwise deserves their fate.

Anonymous said...

If you're thinking of "stretching [your] work", be certain everyone else is doing the same thing. I know my project has been cutting people who aren't producing.

There is no shortage of people who want the work and don't resort to cheating the client out of money in order to (temporarily) secure their seat on a project. What's so hard about putting in an honest effort? I've been doing this for several years now, and while I have experienced some downtime, I keep getting asked back to the same firms when they do have new projects.

Who created the 100 doc per hour rule? Why do associates cite it as gospel? Some docs are on their face non-responsive while others need a complex priv analysis. Do you want it done right or do you want people to just rush through it?

Frank said...

100 documents per hour is easy to achieve in some reviews. In others, it would be impossible.

There's no "rule" as to how fast one should be moving, but it is blatantly obvious if you're not keeping pace with the rest of the team.

Anonymous said...

It is most certainly about the recruiter "liking" you. Yes, your future depends on a cheap floozie with a GED and polyester clothes [or JD from lame law school]. Does not matter you may be valedictorian of Harvard - the floozie must pass you.

They never like me - they can see the contempt in my eyes. I get my gigs by meeting directly with the top dogs.

Anonymous said...

Each project is unique. On one, they did not care about the coding because one guy was coding 500 in a hour. The associates loved the idiot. The rest of us hated him.

We knew he was not reading. However, his crappy pace validated the associate's pacing. Meaning: they didn't expect you to read. Just click to say you reviewed the document. Eventually, we all just followed his pace.

On others, 25 was a lot. Despite the speed, we were reviewing for substance that required cross referencing from other documents to determine how to code multiple document fields.

It also depends on whether you are on projects with cool people or idiots who want to impress low level associates.

The smart ones will research the pacing from others to see what is the norm for the particular project rather than impressing associates who often know very little about the documents.

When the hell are they going to lay off the ghetto staff attorneys at S&C. That's what I really want to know.

Asked and answered duuuuuuh and they laid off most of the temps to. Trouble in box-land!!!! lollollol

Anonymous said...

Code as many documents as you reasonably can. Rushing to meet an artifical quota and not reading the documents properly is unethical. If you rush you are prone to make mistakes. Just come in, do a thorough review, and bill your time properly. Experience teaches you what is a proper pace based upon the particular document set. Newbies tend to either code too fast in order to impress, or tend to code too slow because they don't understand the purpose of document review.

Anonymous said...

The real point is that the business model is dead, period. The rest of this discussion is irrelevant. That said, the staffing agencies make money as long as people continue to code. Get it, so they are perfectly happpy if their coders spend 1 hour on a completely not relevant document...heh, maybe 2 hours. Do not fool yourselves in to believing anything else...clean coders, please. The majority of the document usually are not relevant period....clean coding...only goes to privilege. And, the firms now have their in-house associates reviewing for privilege bc/ they have nothing else to do.

Thanks for the advice. On my gig, it's a deflated rate and we are responsible for redacting and preparing the priv. log as we code. So, the 100 doc rate seems excessive. Also, some batches are easy to code (i.e. all industry shop talk, no attorneys - click responsive and click code and move on) but others are lengthy email chain with multiple attorneys.

Speaking of Sullivan, H. Rodge Cohen, Mr. Inside the Inside liken bankers to coke addicts in their quest for profits. I love how after the fact, Rodge tries to make himself look like he is a man of the people when in reality he profited immensely from the financial crisis.

What is wrong with you all, naming names of people and calling people trash? You're better than that. You dont have to work for these agencies if you dont want to - they're up against outsourcing to India, Brazil and Asia - the better you do, the better they do. No need for personal attacks.

Blogger 2:23PM is "on point". Why isn't this blog carrying more useful factual information about ongoing project staffing and anticipated staffing needs in NYC, DC, Boston and Phili? That said, it is clear that the each of the comments about the issue of number of documents reviewed daily or hourly is really about what many oc reviewers have observed during projects. What may appear as accurate coding, and someone not moving quickly, may also have to do with a) reading speed and comprehension and intellectual focus vs. b) reviwers who disappear on their cell phones for 30 minutes of every hour, to only argue that their reduced numbers refrlects their clean coding. There is no one rule, we've seen everything, and seen too much ripping off of the agencies by the very people the recruiters think are deserving to be called a favorite. Lots of stuff going down behind recruiters backs....they just don't see it.

Re student loans

Income based repayment is your best bet in many cases if you are a temp. This approach is based on 15 percent (soon to be 10 percent of your income and expenses) and after 25 years (they are trying to reduce it to 20) the remaining debt is forgiven. The value of IBR is that if you are not making an income- the repayment is zero. Thus unlike deferments, as far as I understand it, the months of zero payment count against the time for forgiving the debt.

Support the legislation seeking to reduce the amount 10 percent per month. The loan companies like Sallie Mae are fighting the bill.

This site should be posting information about this effort daily as it affects many of you.

Robert Half Legal is the worst. I will never work with them again. The rate was ridiculous. They also micromanaged us.

Thank you so much for the info from the 4:44 pm post.

How do you get signed up for the IBR and do you have more info for that program? Will any payments I made in the past be credited towards the 25 years?

What about private loans? I assume the 15% of monthly income will not include some of us who have massive private loans spread out over 4 lenders in addition to massive federal loans as well or will it? Any suggestions on the privates?

Links for IBR:

http://www.ibrinfo.org/

http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/IBRPlan.jsp

The second link contains a calculator that you may find useful.

IBR only applies to federal student loans. I don't think prior payments count as a part of the program. But, I am not certain.

As for the private debt, my advice is to defer your federal loans or use IBR to reduce the repayment as much as possible so that you can solely pay off the private debt. I don't know your specific debt situation.

Paying off the private debt is what I've been doing because I realized that a) the private debt is much more difficult to deal with (an I am nearly done with the private debt) and b) depending on your interest rate, the public has a lot more flexibility to be repaid later without it harming the overall debt or the means to repay it.

Basically, once I am done with the private debt, I will still owe a lot , but that debt being public gives me a lot more flexibility, and peace of mind than owing some private debtor (who has all the protections of being a public loan without the public interest that the feds have).

This advice worked for me. Each person's financial situation will vary a lot. You should really sit down to research on how you can deal with the debt. It sucks, but that's the best advice I can give you. I made the mistake of following others for along time, and wasted a lot of time and money because of not individualizing my planning to reflect my situation.

Finally, returning to IBR, despite the venom against the administration, the fact is they are trying at least with student loans to make it easier for us. The proposals were to include shifting the time for forgiving the debt to 20 years and 10 percent of income. But, it seems like only the 10 percent of income survives. I am not 100 percent sure it will pass due to Sallie Mae and other companies blocking the reform.

That this site and others bitching at the system are not discussing this very real issue for us is amazing. How many of us would have better piece of mind if our cost of student loans were capped at 10 percent of income based on expenses? I got to think that would be very useful.

Anyway, I hope this help. I stumbled onto this info myself, and was surprise no one was talking about it.

7:45PM Blogger is very very helpful. Amazing, never knew about it. That said, I had a Sallie Mae loan so your info would not have helped. I am totally into the idea of redoing this system, as long as I am not required to devote 5 years ti to skill-less poverty law, community activist groups (former ACORN), or pro bono. Give me something that actually is useful clinically (such as lots of contracts drafting etc.), rather than stick me in some P.C. approved internship or whatever in exchange for student loan forgiveness.

Why shouldn't this blog "name names"?

The whole point is to expose crooks and nasty bitches like thoe at Elaine P. Dine now "The Dine Group."

These agencies are not fighting outsourcing they are contributing to it. Like that lazy bitch Michele Varga of Strategic being a blood sucker going to India.

If you are right the firms that use the agencies should not outsource - but voila they are. I was threatened personally about how much better Indian doc review was. This is a lie of course because Indians are stupid as shit but it is used to drive down rates and scare people like Hitler's SS.

Re Issue of "naming names". This blog allegedly was begun to offer a place where people could be honest about the market. Value to me is knowing from whos to stay away from and which staffing agencies not to do business with, be it in NYC, DC, Boston, and Phili. The recruiters themselves should care about not wanting to see their names up here...what other check and balances do we mere mortal doc reviewers have than something like this to expose those recruiters victimizing us. Only way to regulate it, as long as it isn't done in a way that moves close to libel or defamation. If it is true, it is their problem. They just need to deal with it, get their act and stuff together, and alter their behavoir, both as to interaction and how they hire and who they hire.

Strategic has had an affiliation with Indian outsource firms for years.
