"Synergy"

Hey Tom, a large project is gearing up with Synergy, a new gang of pimps in the doc review ghetto. Rate is $33 flat for 40 hours. Miserable does not begin to describe the situation. The incompetent old hags from Aronld & Porters DC office are running the "training gulag."

First you have to fill out a 12,590 page conflict form listing every firm, matter, and case you've handled since being admitted to the bar, as well as the name of your first grade teacher, blood type, and scores of other irrelevant and personal info. They have been bouncing the forms back again and again for even the smallest typo or discrepancy. Apparently the case involves Avon. Let me tell you, those Arnold & Porter hags sure could use some - they should lay it on like drywall spackle and then sand off the excess.

Anyway, only 2 days into training they already cut 1/3 of the 50 coders for "failing" a pathetic doc review test (maybe they're taking lessons from Lady Barasso). Now they're in scramble mode to replace them ASAP- so all coders beware! Stay as far away from this shitshow as possible- the in-house counsel and Arnold & Porter will be breathing down your neck like it was Alcatraz. The coder/straw boss ratio is like 2:1. I'd rather ride around on a garbage truck than push paper with these devils. A & P obviously have zero experience running this size review- I'm half tempted to write the Avon CEO and let them know that their "counsel" have their heads up their asses (or are their heads their asses- hard to tell!)

LOL. Where is this miserable project?

Anonymous said...

This project is being held at the always miserable Huron Consulting.

Huron is a shady firm that rose from the ashes of Arthur Andersen and was, as of last summer, under SEC investigation for allegedly falsifying its profit reports. Of late, Huron has been branching into the doc review game, gobbling up projects that might otherwise have gone to Update Legal or Hudson. The standard rate is $33 an hour; they do pay OT, but (conveniently) most of their shitty projects are capped at 40 hours.

Two agencies staff for Huron in NYC: Synergy and The Dine Group. Also, the full-time project managers are a pack of incompetent idiots with absolutely no personalities. Yes, shit truly floats to the top at Huron, and it's about time that Tom the Temp exposed them.

Helga said...

Here are the A&P rules:
1. Shit flows down hill.
2. Rightie Tightie, Lefty Looosie
3. Pay day is Friday.

Good luck and keep your head down if you are on this project.

I had the identical experience with A&P.....I had my conflicts report thrown back in my face 2 times. Not only was it requiring info pre J.D. and LL.M, but into my jobs since prep school. It was outrageous. My husband, also an attorney, was very very angry about the treatment, particularly as he knows the A&P attorneys and has worked with the partners professionally on his own stuff. The problem is not A&P, it is that those attorneys selected to work for the firm and with the staffing agencies on the doc rev projects are so paranoid - the partners being super super careful about leaks. Generally, the associates see being assigned to these projects as a demotion, so they take it out on doc reviewers....when in fact the doc reviwers themselves know more than they, and could probably run the project without them.....the smart thing to have done was to hire staff attorneys from former doc rev projects such as Tyco/BSF, then you would have people who know how to work with doc reviewers and can show some respect, rather than putting a bunch of associates who probably have less real world attorney experience than most doc reviwers - themselves who oftentimes have had federal court clerkships, have been DAs,LL.Ms and actually publish in law journals etc etc.
These firms just do not get it. And then they wonder why their projects fail or get screwed up or why people vent on this blog. Also, the fact this firm is a D.C. firm may have alot to do with it. They really don't ;like NY attorneys and they suffer so much hubris and arrogance just bc/of the D.C. overlay...they take it all too seriously and have too inflated an opinion of the themselves in the context of the law.....it is like heh attorneys in D.C. "get a life"......they suffer probably from a lack of perspective and then they come into our territory and try it on us...like Hello, this is New York and the character and abilities of most NY attorneys ven on doc review should blow these D.C. guys out of the water...Jerks...send them back to D.C.

Anonymous said...

8:23, I disagree. Many staff attorney I have worked with have been GHETTO! One nasty dude at S&C would comment on the breast size of various women. Give me a polite, professional associate to work with anyday.

If in-house counsel are treating the temps poorly, I'm sure the GC would like to know.

Anonymous said...

They are all in it together - good cop, bad cop. Even if you report it minor changes may be made, but the overall structure remains the same. The higher up partners will always play good cop and smile and seem benevolent, and the dirty work is left to the associates. But in reality they are all part of the same team and despite their smiles the partners are the ones really turning on the screws. As we all know.

Anonymous said...

One of the reasons the firms love to hire the agencies. Good cop/Bad cop routine. Firm reaps most of the profits, while agency gets the flack for running the unventilated trashy basement.

Anonymous said...

Synergy is just a conduit for Huron, as posted above, the real culprit. Huron has two offices in Manhattan, Park Ave, staffed by Dine and Sixth Ave, staffed by Synergy.

They tell you that Huron is a publicly-traded company, like that's a big deal, so they have to be very cost-conscious. Huron is a numbers-game, they want you to stand outside the building until they have a document for you to review, then you can run in, sign in, review it, sign out and wait until they call you back. This "just-in-time" doc reviewer shit works in this economy, too.

Also, the vast majority of dental plans don't cover braces. They are too expensive to be covered.

So Dental Guy, what's your point? I would imagine you are just another Obamacare supporter.

As to labeling contract and doc review attorneys as "Ghetto", you are really quite outrageous. As you well know, the cadres now include some pretty talented attorneys who've met the fate many older now contract and doc review attorneys faced years ago, with each of the earlier market crashes. If you have been working with what you call "Ghetto" attorneys, then maybe you've only gotten S&C gigs, and haven't been creative enough nor enterprising enough to find, or be selected for, the really good ones. They are out there and many are quite substantive. The unfrotunate thing is that for many younger law graduates since @ 1996, too many law graduates, and starting then all of the great opportunities most graduates would find or create themselves no longer will be available. LImited options for real training in the law, and thus, hence, thousands of graduates nationwide who never will really understand the practice or law nor get a chance to even hit a good experience...hence, do reviewers in the basement of S&C dong only "coding" and no more....thus, no way to get out of the "ghetto" as you call it.....try other gigs and stay away from S&C. Moreover, I am not surprised at your experience..everyone knows S&Cs game and that is why they never can hire anyone other than the guy you described.....they are the oldest fraudulent doc review game in NYC...everyone knows that and has known it for over 12 years....why haven't you and why do you allow yourself to remain. This is your issue, not the agencies or the law firms.

Anonymous said...

You are wrong. All the doc review gigs are ghetto. Some can afford coke and cheat on their wives in more exotic locales, but ghetto is ghetto. Stay away from this profession. Is is dead, and the only people that remain are either trapped because of student debt, or psycho.

Contract work used to be rewarding but the unending flow of law school graduates into the workforce has turned the legal profession into the Grapes of Wrath. Wages will continue to be pushed down and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Get out of this type of work by any means necessary. Maintain a safe distance from those still trapped in it. Sooner or later, the psychological effect of unending demeaning treatment will crack even the strongest minds. Believe me, I've seen it happen in others. It's....sad.

Just because the firm is smaller doesn't mean it will be any better or less "ghetto", as you refer to it. And I not even talking about the plaintiff class action slop shops here. Oftentimes, at the smaller shops you are immersed in nasty internal politics for a job that you aren't even receiving benefits at! And god forbid that you are even actually granted that rare sliver of opportunity to engage in something a tiny bit more substantive. The perm staff will set you up to get you out immediately.

What's going on at Labatoilet? So, they just fired a bunch of people and are looking to hire more?

Labatoilet is another weird firm. Some of the associates I worked with there looked like Guidos - from the Jersey Shore. One greasy slimy lawyer was always looking down the blouse of a temp - who did nothing to cover up her cleavage either. Her shirt was unbuttoned all the way down to her navel. Uuuuuuuck, they all made me want to vomit.

Hello, my friends. I believe I've finally figured out the technology that will allow me to once again communicate and interface with you, my debtors. Let's see if it works.

DEANMAN MASSA-SAR said...

OK, it works! I'm so very happy!

I've created a blog: http://the-massa-sar-chronicles.blogspot.com

I'll post there as often as my busy schedule as both Dean of New York Law School AND Chairman of Access Group allows. (For all who don't know, Access Group is the student loan company that most NYLS students have their student loans with.)

I don't think it's a conflict of interest for me to serve concurrently as dean of a law school and chairman of the student loan company that most of my students have loans with, even though all sane, rational, and uncompromised people do. What do you think?

Anyway, that's all the time I have for now; I have a meeting tonight with the NYLS Board of Trustees to see how much we made by selling the property on Church & Leonard, where the old law library stood, to rich Tribeca condo developers.

PS- I LOVE the new building we built on West Broadway, even though our grads are floundering out there, unable to break in with mutt-like legal pedigrees...

Huron has been discussed on this site and very little of it has been poositive. I am actually surpised they are even paying as much as they do up here when they have been getting away with paying their Carolina and Florida attorneys 20 an hour for years now.

Anonymous said...

Synergy is run/owned by Huron Consulting....While they don't advertise it, they used to state on the website that Huron is it's only client. It is a way for Huron to justify the agency mark-up of contract attorneys, claim to it's client's that it has to go outside to hire contract attorneys, and also collect from both sides. They get the agency mark-up, because they are the agency, and they also get the mark-up from the client. Even though Huron bills the project as a whole, as oppose to the hourly breakdown a law firm would charge/pass along to it's client, it is still factored in.

I wonder if the working conditions of the people who produce legal services will ever become important to the clients who pay for them.

Consumers elsewhere have realized that even if they are buying a high quality product, it makes a difference if the product is produced by people working in deplorable conditions or for low wages.

Not much unlike a high-end fashion house is able to sell dresses at preimum prices to well-heeled buyers, places like A&P, S&C are in the business of selling a product, backed by a reputation for quality.

But I bet the same buyers would be appalled to find that despite the image they were sold, the people who actually made the dress or combed through mounds of electronic evidence were actually forced to work in conditions unfit for any professional.

Its especially disturbing at a place like S&C which survived the crisis thriving, yet working conditions are deplorable and getting worse by the day - docreviews there are basically set up on card tables, surrounded by walls of boxes, fire hazards, weird chemical smells, filthy bathrooms, windowless rooms, no internet access to check news or weather, etc. In any other world it would be a sweatshop, plain and simple.

I think that the only thing that will change these conditions is a client demand for change. I wonder how the CEOs and general counsels of the companies for whom we most recently worked would react to letters describing the miserable conditions in which we labored on their behalf. Would they even care?

Hello alleged professionals contributing to this blog...MIght we actually entertain intelligent, value added discourse. None of us are really interested in the below standard, child-like comments inserted by some - that oftentimes compose 30% of the discourse e.g. "yuk yuk"....Reading many of the contributions leads one to consider the probability that those contributing to the sub-standard discourse might be lucky to even have a doc review position.
Language and writing actually reflect intelligence and capability, thus, the sub-standard discourse of many herein only reflects you may not deserve more than you've been able to "land" to date. Please contribute in a way that is constructive. Thank you. More bad news for the LPO industry.

India Shuts Its Doors on Foreign FirmsThe new ruling affects all aspects of law firm work, including M&A advice, not just litigationZach LoweThe American LawyerDecember 16, 2009 Post a Comment Image: Jeffrey Coolidge/Photodisc One of India's highest courts has banned foreign law firms from all forms of practice in India, a major victory for a trade group of Indian lawyers and a defeat for firms that opened liaison offices in India during a brief window in the 1990s, according to the blog Legally India. Representatives of the three firms immediately affected by the ruling -- Ashurst, White & Case and Chadbourne & Parke -- have confirmed the nature of the decision and said they are reviewing its implications, according to Legally India and media contacts at two firms that we contacted early Wednesday. Only Ashurst still has an open liaison office in India, and the firm's Web site specifies that the office does not provide legal advice. White & Case conducts much of its India practice from offices in Singapore, a spokesman tells us. The Bombay High Court's ruling quashes the optimism some legal observers felt in May, when India's voters re-elected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a proponent of liberalizing the country's economy. Foreign law firms have been banned in India since a 1995 high court ruling that closed the brief window during which the three firms named above opened their liaison offices. As we reported in June, several major firms have gotten around the ban by creating alliances with Indian firms under which they refer business to each other. Linklaters, Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance are among the firms that have struck such deals. One interesting note from Wednesday's ruling: According to Legally India, the high court ruled that the practice of law encompasses just about everything a law firm might do. Lawyers arguing for the international firms said the ban on the practice of law should apply only to litigation and not to M&A advice and other out-of-court work. This article first appeared on The Am Law Daily blog on AmericanLawyer.com.

How's is this bad for the LPO's? India bars American lawyers from working in India, but the ABA opens its arms wide open to Indian lawyers working on American matters. Sounds completely reasonable (nutty) to me.

1. Emily, Sonia, and yours truely do not have even remotely similar writing styles. Anyone who reads for a living should realize this.

2. Tom told you that the three of us post from different computers. Why would he lie about that?

Unless you happen to be a conspiracy nut of the most paranoid variety, it is difficult to grasp WHY anyone would still cling to the notion that the three of us are charachters generated by the same individual. It would be too damn much work to coordinate something like that and hardly worth it - its not like we're making money or meeting rich men on this board so whre is the payoff for such behavior?

So I must conclude that you are, in fact, a conspiracy nut of the most paranoid variety. This being the Silly Season and all, I sincerely hope that this is a passing issue for you and that after the holidays are over you will chill out and stop inventing problems where none exist.

Until then: "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, IT IS A DUCK!" (an esteemed law professor taught me that little gem - I use it every day).

Speaking of meeting rich men - yep, you are certainly not going to meet them here - only debt slaves like that nasty yuk yuk - I don't know why I even waste my time here -

Esteemed Esquires,
I am humbled and honored to be in your presence. I am but a small cockroach solicitor who has been bold enough to come onto this blog and post some matters of the mind. In recent days, however, I have found myself exceedingly disturbed by the rowdy and common behaviour of one Mr. Yuk Yuk. I cannot believe this gentleman is allowed to be part of such an esteemed organization such as yours. He is a mere bully and street hooligan. Unsavoury characters such as his cast dark shadows over this site and I would suggest you take immediate steps to get rid of such common elements.
I remain Your Most Humble Servant

I had a rough day today. I nearly pulled 5 middle eastern gentlemen out of their sportscar and clubbed them all over the head with my 9 iron after they tried to use said sportscar as a weapon. HUH! They obviously don't watch Fox News or they'd know not to fuck with Scandanavian women. I then went to visit my cardiologist and was chastised because my blood pressure was too high. DUH! I finally arrived at home only to find fan mail from the Yuk Yuk. Some days just don't get any better than this...

I wish Trailer Tom was out of the joint. I could use a little moonshine about now...

Has anyone ever brought up UNION? Organize and demand higher wages? Almost every "craft" in this country has one. A few don't but most do.

If you google "tom the temp unionize" you will have the pleasure of reading the discussions on that topic

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays - don't buy silly gifts!!! Buy good hearty food and heat - trust me you are going to need to fortify yourself for the coming year. Gerald Celente says next year we are going to be giving each other food stamps for X-mas. Yikes!! I am getting the hell out of this country ....

Holy Crap!! I hope some order has been restored to this site! It once had a certain je ne sais quoi about it. Now you have some nerd beating the "serious" drum. Wait little boy - life will get serious enough. Don't rush it - and when it does I hope you can handle it. Gimme a freakin break - and what's up with that Joe Lieberman, - another whiny little bitch. Hey Helga, how ya doin'?

Hello. I am the one whom you call the Huron Witch. I quite resent the appalling things being said about Huron on this site. I simply will not stand for it, and to put a stop to this nonsense I shall cast a spell to dispense with you all. Any queries? Good. Now back to coding.

Hi David - good to hear from you - missed you and the monkeys in your pants, dude!!

Joe Lieberman indeed. I catch bits and pieces of his schtick on the big screen in the kitchen at work - the dude needs to get layed so see if you can procure some wrinkled old hag for him, will ya? Your country is counting on you. Tell the old broad just to lay back and think of Wisconsin!

MMMMMmmmmmmooooooooooooooooo!!

I worked at Huron Consulting in NC. Got the job through Synergy. It pays $20 an hour and time and a half for OT. Not as bad as the doc review jobs described on this site. But not good. Projects are sporadic, so there may not be one for two weeks or two months. They require 37 hours a week but really want you to work more. You are watched and even though you have freedom to go to the bathroom and check email in the break room, they don't want you to. They do not like fast and efficient coders. They prefer people to work slower. I was constantly being told to slow down. The slower I go, the more hours I work, the more the client is billed, is what I would assume from that. I got a shady vibe from the day I walked in there, and it seems once you catch on, they don't want you working there anymore. Anyone with any brains leaves within six months.

I have to laugh at the people who say anything positive here regarding doc review. It's amazing what law schools produce today. If you can't detect a scam, how can you really call yourself a lawyer?

Huron consulting just got hired to do a performance audit at a major hospital. Ironic since the were accused of advising another hospital to over bill Medicare and got caught.

Put that a side. Can any of you legal schoolers give me some advise on how to survive this shit show and not get cut.
