A Happy New Year's Surprise: Unemployment Benefit Extensions Set To Expire By End Of The Year

Readers of your blog should note that the recent unemployment extensions do not apply to everyone. This is especially important for those laid off after July 1, 2009, as we go into the holiday season when temp hiring may slow down.

AND you all think that government managed healthcare is going to be any different....they screwed up the vaccines, and now they can';t even deliver on basic needs such as being able to buy food, and pay for your rent and/or mortgage.....when are all of you who think like mere cattle going to begin understanding the game going down,.....when you finally are evicted???? cause your ran out of benefits promised you by the government and as part of a campaign pledge.....it is beginning to look like the long bread lines in the good ole USSR...hello, people? and that entire thing in USSR was driven by ideology as well.....is SIEU gong to pay YOUR rent?

I am totally confused. When I applied for benefits back in Feb 2009 this is what they told me:

Basic = 26 weeks

First Tier = 13 plus 7 = 20 weeks

Second Tier = 13 weeks [but for this I would have had to exhaust benefits by Dec 27, 2009]

Third = 13 +7 [this is what I had thought was signed on Nov. 6, 2009] and I thought this was for those who couldn't get Second Tier because of expiration date.

We simply do not have a sustainable economic system in this country. We have seen the effects that large-scale offshoring and outsourcing has had on the working classes. If these people have no disposable income, they cannot generate more jobs in a service-based, consumer-led economy.

When you give tax breaks to the top 1-5%, these pigs simply turn around and offshore industries, buy another yacht, or hoard it away.

While this was happening - with the government's acquiesence and backing - the government and its education complex minions kept bombarding us with the national mantra: "Education is the key. This is the best way to insulate yourself from having your job outsourced."

What a load of shit. Wake the fuck up, people!! And do something about this! At least I am trying to expose the law school scam, so others don't fall prey to the education industrial complex.

2010 is going to be a doozy.

Unless Congress acts, all unemployment extensions sunset by the end of the year. You can finish up whatever "tier" you are on into the next year, but you will be unable to move up into the next one.

Even if you have a job and are paying student loans, cease to do so immediately. Store up money for food and basic necessities.

Anonymous said...

Basically people who have been sitting on their ass all year can get nore benfits than those who have trying to work in between and will not exhaust benefits by the deadlines.

Great!! Now I wished I hadn't worked and lolled around watching Oprah and been eligible for extension upon extension...

Anonymous said...

What about people who got laid off later?? They will only get 26 plus 20 - while those unemployed sooner will get a gazillion weeks

Barry, where are the jobs you promised? I am sure you would like to keep extending unemployment, but how is that going to be possible? Wen Jiabao and the guys didn't really seem to be soaking up your chummy hum-chum over there in Beijing. Keep allowing the ABA and the other trade organizations to enrich those at the top by outsourcing all the work to Mumbai.

When I read this, I merely crapped in my pants. That means I will be cut off by the 15th of January. There are no jobs to speak of and I have less than a grand in my checking account.

Anonymous said...

My fault is that I was not unemployed Nov 8, 2008 or sooner. If I had I could have soaked up ALL the benefits for almost 1.5 or more years....

Woe me - that I lost my job later in the year and then continued to try and get temp work - now I get the least benefits...

It's actually a blessing that I am old and decrepit. Hitting my peak in the seventies was the best thing that I could have asked for.

I actually feel sorry for the young hot things running around today. To be anything other than six feet under in this country within the next thirty years will be a curse.

For all those confused - go to the NY unemployment page - they now have a complete listing of tiers.

They had taken it down in between to update but it's back up.

They also have a facebook page.

I keep telling you kids to get on your horses and ride out of NY as fast as you can. But nnooooooooo - you insist on "sticking it out" in the face of overwhelming evidence that our industry is in a deep recession/depression and things are only going to get worse in 2010. You insisted on going to a TTT and now you insist on wallowing around in your unemployed boxer shorts waiting for a miracle that won't materialize. Face it, kids - there ain't no pot of gold at the end of this rainbow. A pot of shit maybe, but no gold, no money, and no student loan forgiveness. You have entered the Economic Twilight Zone: run for your lives.

The best solution is to get on the phone or on the internet and start bombarding Schumer and the other one with e-mails et al demanding they get off their behinds and started paying attention to matters, other than healthcare, that are of immediate concern...start paying attention to the immediate needs of their voters, rather than sitting around playing with their friends on The Hill and their egos, go to chi chi dinners allegedly to discuss and horsetrade....when all it is about is scratching each others backs to get "x" in return for "y", and both x and y are far into the future and only concern their local voters......these guys on the The Hill could care less whether or not you can pay their rent..they just want to get invited to the right parties, horse trade to get re-elected, and push some ideology that keeps them on the right side of "O"...it has nothing to do with the everyman's daily concerns, they are far from those issues, they live in the beltway, not outside of it. Start bpmbarding all of them with e-mails and phone calls

O'kay guys, checked the NYS Department of Labor UE web site on benefits extension. Here is the story, if you've lost your work just recently, and I believe did so after a time this summer, you only get 26 weeks period. No extensions. If The Hill screws up over the next few weeks, and doesn't vote to secure those benefits assumed, count on the fact you will only see 26 weeks. So, it is in the gov'ts interest to pretent the economy is imporiving and to say that job losses are flat, particularly if they want the money set aside for their ridiculougt bill going through this weekend. They'd rather have the healthcare bill then see you employed or receive more UE benefits.....you can figure where this is going...it is why they are going to ramm through this bill this weekend. They assume there will be a big second leg to this recession coming down next year, and jobs will never improve, so they better ram through a safety net for healthcare, since no one certainly will have any money. Look closely guys, particularly if they don't nail down the extensoint his weekend...it may be nothing but smoke and mirrors, and Pelosi, Reid, Rahm, and O are all magincians hypnotizing yo guys....and most of you yuppies bought it. For the first time in your soft lives, you are going to really have a life lesson...get ready. mI doubt many of you are prepared nor have the steel to make it through it....good luck. Those from other couintries will, but if you are a typical American, regardless of upbringing and race etc. you guys won't be able to handle it, and alot of you will fold.

It's not just the newly employed who are going to be SOL. Extended unemployment is divided up into various tiers. If you just happen to be at the end of your tier when the end of the year hits, you are going to be screwed. I can only imagine how many more foreclosures and homelessness this is going to cause, while all the Goldman bozos are enjoying their historic bonuses.

One of the things that will be addressed in the upcoming jobs legislation through Congress is the date issue. They want to extend, but this time, eliminate the December 2009 date.

By the way, guess who blocked addressing the issue before with the prior extensions? Republicans and Conservative Democrats.

So, it is ironic to see some of the whiners here complain while also spouting off the same conservative ideology that is blocking the extensions.

I guess that is why no one ever said lawyers are self aware.

This is what we need to do!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091120/ap_on_re_us/us_california_university_fees

Look, these students had the balls to occupy buildings to protest a 32 percent increase in student fees, coupled with budget cuts.

In contrast, lawyers are too afraid to lose their precious law licenses, or fear having their reputation smeared. (Because having a law degree has been such a "wise investment" and "benefit" to most.)

Anonymous said...

For everyone who got laid off "too late" to enjoy the tons and tons of extensions, I understand your annoyance. But make no mistake, you were definitely better off having worked and received a much higher income than those who were laid off much earlier.

I understand the annoyance on the fairness front. People who were laid off much earlier seemed to have been able to collect a much higher number of weeks of compensation. (if congress fixes the date, everyone will have an equal 90 weeks or whatever). But still, you are in a much better position than those who were laid off earlier. You should have earned significantly more money in the overlapping period of you being employed while the others were not. You may have worked harder, but you received much more.

If the dates aren't fixed, basically everyone will end sometime in January, February, or March. Nobody will get to their next tier. (Unless you get laid off in December, in which case you'll go into may/June).

And although I have some amount of respect for Nando, i advise against occupying buildings. As Elie on ATL would say: no need to get your butt baton'd by billy clubs. And rubber bullets hurt, I'm sure. It's one thing to lose your law license. It's another to put yourself in a position where cops can legally kick the bejeezus out of you.

I am not fully understanding your post because of your writing style.

You are right that there is concern that President Obama's economic team just does not get it. These are the same people that along with the Bush team who ran the country into the ground.

He is attempting to once again appease some of the same conservative types who post here in that he is more concerned with Wall Street economic stability than main street. Thus, he is actually entertaining the idea of freezing spending in the middle of the worse job market since the Great Depression. That's what Democrats are worried about. The last time such a policy was tried- well it was one of the reason there was a Great Depression.

He is worried about the conservative argument over inflation, but the problem may be deflation.

The Black Caucus is saying- no, all is not good just because Wall Street is having a great year when you are facing double digit unemployment rates. The financial 'reform" (or lack thereof) was just used by them to address the jobs bill issue. Either that, or they are bought off by the industry. I don't know which.

But, that is a separate issue from whether the Democrats will pass extensions beyond December. A million people are set to go off of unemployment come Jan 2010. Democrats are stupid, but not that stupid. Well, at least, I hope they aren't, but who can tell with them since I have underestimated their death wish in the past year.

I filed for benefits on 2/2/2009. My 26 weeks were up in August. Then I got 20 weeks. If I had not worked temp in between - desperately seeking anything - my 20 weeks would be up BEFORE Dec 7, 2009 and I could have 20 more weeks.

Yes, I earned a LITTLE more - not a lot - but I had to kiss A LOT of hairy ass of recruiters and stupid fat partners. Plus all the craziness and running around to agencies and whoring myself. And the subway costs. Now I wish I had just stayed home and gotten 20 more weeks - I really hope they give the equal amount of benefits to everyone. People unemployed since 2008 should have figured out a game plan by now and should have moved to Alaska and fishing for food by now!!! I am not even one year in and even I have figured out I need to get out of NYC FAst - as soon as I can save money to move I getting the fuck outta here!!!

But that's all I can afford - if I have to go, I hope I go fast and not suffer in pain!!!

I never thought with all my education and high ideals I would in such a position. Today I caught sight of myself in the mirror at Target - and I looked like a sad homeless lady - !!!

Look it guys, spend time contacting our reps on The Hill...
the fact is that passing the legislaton Saturday is a given, and the only reason everyone on The Hill is willing to do it is becuase they have information not available to us to show that the only alternative to more unemployment and a worsening economic situation is to be able to take care of people's health. These people are not being honest withy anyone....they do not have any solutions because they've been in Washington too long, and none of them have actually run a business. There is more very bad news coming down the pike, and these guys are running scared.....get out of NYC, reduce your expenses, there is real bad stuff coming down the pike...you better be preparing. If ou were not raised by parents who went through thge Depression and if you didn't learn something, you better start reading.....the game is over. get used to it and prepare. What we need, but we will not get is a move away from the conservative model of paper finance economics that favors Wall Street toward an economy that makes something, which is not necessarily a liberal policy view.

Bu,t it is one that says focus on long term capitalism and economic stability rather than easy money for Wall Street and treating finance like it is winning in Vegas.

This probably will not happen. So, it is true. Things are going to probably be pretty bad for a while until Americans require this of politicians.

Once we can quiet down the idiots who do misunderstand because this is not about race or any of the other traditional b.s. that Americans have played in the last few decades to cover up the real economic problems.

The problem with Americans is that we got comfortable thinking of our selves as number 1 so we can not imagine that we may not always remain number 1. We make policies based on this assumption.

No super power has survived based on paper finance economics- ever. DC is trying to maintain the status quo of the prior decades of poor short term economic history rather than cutting its loses.

I do not see either party addressing these issues any time soon or the American people getting real. I expect the GOP to keep going more and more nutty right. I expect the Democrats to keep being fearful of their own shadow while taking money.

Joe Turner: Ask them?

Higgins: Not now--then! Ask 'em when they're running out. Ask 'em when there's no heat in their homes and they're cold. Ask 'em when their engines stop. Ask 'em when people who have never known hunger start going hungry. You wanna know something? They won't want us to ask 'em. They'll just want us to get it for 'em!

If the unemployed want to take some kind of action, I would suggest writing to the House of Representatives. Don't bother writing (or calling) Senators at this time, because they're all busy with the health care debate. However, the health care debate is already over on the House side (or at least temporarily over until they try to merge the Senate and House bills.) So the House members have a bit more time and perhaps can give more effort to fixing the dates. Get it passed on one side of the congress first. When it passes one side, maybe then the Senate might take notice and just quickly approve a similar bill. But it's no use to try to get the Senate to do it before the House, the Senate is too busy right now.

If you're looking for an alternative course of action, you can always live under the sea. It solves everything.

My biggest disappointment w/ the Obama Administration thusfar has been how it's treated Wall Street with kid gloves. I guess that I should've known better b/c even during the campaign I knew how much money the Obama campaign was receiving from hedge funds and i-banks -- and then there was the appointment of Timothy Geithner, who's done little more than just rehash what Henry Paulson and the other Goldman Sachs crooks slung out right after Lehman Bros. fell. I really wish that there was some old-school FDR-style financier bashers in high places.
