FirstLawJob.com Is A Scam, Scam, Scam

Hey Tom, a new company has opened to prey on the hordes of TTT losers who just took last week's NY Bar. There name is FirstLawJob.com and they spamming the job boards.

These scammers have been around in various mutations and forms since the late 1990s. Here's the deal: They tweak your TTT resume and cover letters a bit (like putting your Touro Sports Law Journal experience in boldface type), pull a 1996 Martindale directory out of a dumpster, and mail-bomb a bunch of marginal (and often defunct) shitlaw firms, many of whom haven't hired anyone since the Nixon administration. Of course, they've never actually gotten anyone a job, but the desperation and hopelessness of this market often lulls TTT grads into falling for this scam. They're a bit like the "after-scammers" who phone Ponzi scheme victims and claim to be able to recover their lost investments for an upfront fee. Smart move. After all, if someone was dumb enough to fall for the law school scam, why wouldn't they also fall for this "secondary" charade? This website was alive and well in 2006 when this year's crop of lemmings marched off to the NYC diploma mills. They all thought they'd "beat the system," and now are stuck in a lifetime of non-dischargable debt with no hope of finding ANY job, period. Ain't happening in this market.

Actually, the word "market" is a misnomer when applied to TTT grads, or even bottom half of marginally decent schools like Fordham. There is no non-biglaw legal "market" and hasn't been for years. All there is is hordes of desperately indebted losers begging for whatever gutter job they can scrounge, often under-bidding each other in the process. It's like a reverse auction: "I'll do no-fault for 35 K, 35 K going once, going twice...wait, I'll do it for 33 K. 33 K! Gavel bangs. "Sold!" One no-fault job at Melli Guerin to the 'Bozo grad in the red necktie for 33 K!"

The recent agency postings here calling for unadmitted 2009 grads are telling. These sweatshops want to exploit the false hope of the recent group of lemmings, lulling them into thinking doc review is a "resume booster" and shows initiative, etc. As the old saw goes, "if you're afraid of getting a rotten apple, don't go to the barrell. Get it off the tree. If they let anyone other than 2009 grads into this gulag, word would quickly spead about the dead-end nature of the job and kill morale like a pestilience.

We are at the end of times. Back in 2005, an unadmitted JD could toil in the Paul Weiss cockroach pit for $21 an hour + unlimited OT and $10 a day for food. Now, almost 5 years later, the same shitwork is paying $1 an hour LESS. Just you wait. There's nowhere left to stash these over-leveraged lemmings anymore, and a shitstorm of very pissed-off people are going to start speaking out more and more. You can't have 85-90% of a law school class unemployed and not expect some serious repercussions to follow.

No, paralegal work is worse. You'll make the same money -- but many career paralegals are GRADE A GHETTO - gutter people [barring the young college grads]. I know I worked with them.

They are stupid, dumb, duuuuuuuh, HOOD RATS like Valvina Scissorhands. Eeeeeeew.....

Career paralegals are some of the most strangest and most ghetto people that you will ever meet.

Anonymous said...

They have NO finesse - and they are strange. I worked with them as grad student after I decided to make a move from finance to law and still have to deal with them until I finish law school. They have no polish, no intellectual capacity, no refinement, no inquiring minds, no curiosity - they are strange and dead people. I find nurses and paramedics much more alive and intellectually alive than paras although technically they are on the same level. And yet they are making upwards of $90,000/year not counting overtime.

I worked with a Fillipino career lady paralegal at an IP firm. She was making $90,000 a year, she was fat and chubby, a total idiot, she told me she wore thongs everyday [as if anyone cared, was rude and nasty, except to partners, played sly old lady politics, and totally fucked up the IP case. And yet she moved onto get another job for $95,000. I am not sure how this happens with these hookers - maybe they blow someone.

For some reason, Filipina women are some of the most underhanded and sneaky people that you will ever meet. Maybe it is a cultural thing? If you see a Filipino in a law firm environment, cover your back.

Scotty Farts - nice post. The truth is that a paralegal job is far better for most.

A sr par gig is far easier and far more in demand than some pathetic TTT lawyer.

Don't listed to the LPO charlatans, they want to take all ourt work and ship it off to India.

Paras are good jobs.

SomedayN we will laugh at all of the greedy fools who outsourced the American Middle Class. That day is coming sooner than many think.

The blogger says there will be an uprising but he forgets the main reason people go to law school is to show off. "I'm a Juris Doctorate". "I work at Paul, Weiss". "I am like Boston Legal. That's the real me." Thus if they expose the fraud they expose themselves as frauds.

Wrong! It is the same or better and you dont need the 3 years and $200,000 cost of law school.

Better yet: In California don't even need to go to law school to take the bar. Just skip it!

The agencies are hiring new grads at the request of TTT schools who DESPERATELY need to get even a marginal inflation in employment statistics!!!

The Schools are trying to prolong the lie just a little longer in hopes the economy rebounds enough to cover their asses/lies again.

Despite an increase jobs for temporary attorneys as cost-cutting corporation clients seek to get the same work done for less than they would have to pay a law firm associate or partner, a glut of laid-off lawyers is making it harder to get this kind of work, too.

A year ago, a lawyer who needed a document review job or another temporary assignment could generally find one. But now there is an oversupply, reports the San Fernando Valley Business Journal (sub. req.).

Hourly pay ranges from $30 to $37—less than what contract attorneys made earlier this year—because of the increased supply of available lawyers, Cameron Peterson of the Los Angeles regional office of Compliance Staffing told the business publication.

“I met a recent grad who went to Duke and Harvard Law School, and had done impressive law clerking,” recounts Peterson, who serves as director of recruiting and staffing for the business. “She can’t find a full-time job in this economy.”

Anonymous said...

"And yet they are making upwards of $90,000/year not counting overtime."

Yeah, you can just walk right into a paralegal job paying that. No experience necessary. Just like being a cop making 100K or a garbage man makeing six figures. Those jobs are all over the place, but since you have a JD you can't apply for them.

Give me a fucking break. If you're so stupid you believe that crap, you deserve to be doing doc. review.

Oh yeah, one more thing. There are no jobs. Nothing at all out there -- nobody in the huge city of New York is hiring. The only option is to temp.
Whatever.

"There is no non-biglaw legal "market" and hasn't been for years."

Right, last time I checked Martindale, there were only small firms and solos or BIGLAW. Nothing in-between. Those small places never hire, and if they do it's only 30K with no posibility of a raise. Not to mention government jobs. The government never hires lawyers.

"Hi, McShill"

McShill said...

You guys relly need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and griping about the lack of jobs and starting salaries. Entry level jobs at 45-60K (generally what a lawyer will get) are not that easy to find. Try doing that with a history degree.

Just because a few people are making 160K doesn't mean that everybody will. Moreover, you have the opportunity to continue to grow your income form your starting salary based on your performance.

For example, an RN or accountannt may start at 60K or whatever, but she's not going to crack 150K 10 years into the profession. A lawyer on the other hand, may start at 45K, but the increase in takehome pay increases rapidly.

However, you have to work at a low salary for a short period of time until you are profitable. New lawyers don't know what the hell they're doing and screw things up left and right. So they're not worth that much.

Once they reach a point where they're not screwing things up, they're profitable. After that, when they learn how to work the system they become very profitable.

Letting the temp agencies jerk you around and give you no substanative skills for 15K more per year is stupid (the average temp in this economy isn't craking 65K if they're not working week-ends.)

Temping makes sense if you have experience and are using the money to start a solo practice or have something you'd rather be doing than a career. However, career temping is plain stupid.

The only exception may be the foreign language temps, but in a good economy, they should be able to land some kind of regular job.

Unemployment Statistics:
I guess that when U6 (the most inclusive measure of unemployment by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) hits 20 percent we'll be in a Depression (after all it was estimated to be at 20 percent during the Great Depression). Right now, its at 16.8 percent. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm
The new figures for July will be out in a few days.

Anonymous said...

4:35, you don't know your arrogant, judgemental ass from a hole in the ground. You have no idea what's out there. Do you think we'd be doing this if there was a better alternative? We're looking, believe me. But in case you hadn't noticed (its hard to see what's going on when you have your head up your ass) the economy has tanked, the law schools are still cranking out baby lawyers like the whores that they are, and the law firms are laying off associates and staff in every major US city at an alarming rate. Doc review work isn't coming in (its going out to India) and many of us don't know if we'll be able to pay our rent. So have a nice day, mother fucker. And don't judge lifer. It's rude.

Anonymous said...

Hey, McShill - you make sounds like you hire newbee lawyers. You sound like you know a lot about the whole process. Maybe you should do the profession a favor and guest lecture 1L's about starting salaries for newly minted attorneys.

Anonymous said...

I'm not judging anybody. However, I am judging the post that started this. The post is ridiculous.

The bottom half of Fordham ISN'T unemployed or temping. There ARE jobs. Being a lawyer IS a good career. There ARE options besides biglaw and temping. Shitlaw (I prefer the term small law) IS a better choice than temping. And, being a paralegal ISN't a better job than being an attorney.

Oh yeah. There ARE alternatives (like getting a job at a small firm), and doc review ISN’T going to India. Even if it was, were you planning on making a career out of it.

Anonymous said...

It's normally between 45-60K if you're not specialized (patent or graduated from a good school). The current economy is pushing it down, but it will come back up.

There's generally a pretty good increase 10% or more after 6 months and then up to about 75-80K at one year. Or you lateral.

Anonymous said...

I cannot believe that anyone could live in New York, Chicago, DC, Los Angeles, or SF on 45K a year unless they have no or very low student loan payments, no car, and eat bologna sandwiches every day. And what do you propose that older graduates do? Dump their children off at the local orphanage so they can work for 45 to 60 K a year? Your model will work for a 25 year old with no debt. But we don't see that many youngsters from that group in the doc review rooms - they cannot hack it - generally they end up running out screaming into the night and go home to live with their parents for a few years until they figure out something else to do or get a government shit job.

45 K a year is a pathetic salary for a high school dropout, much less an attorney with 7 years of education. It comes out to less than $20 an hour if you assume a 45 hour work week (and most shitlaw lawyers work more like 50-55 hours).

And the clowns on here who talk about "building experience" are very naive. Shitlaw salaries just don't rise much, since so many people already have shitlaw experience. Doing auto accident depositions and cut n' paste discovery motions in insurance defense is a road to nowhere. Even 5 years out most shitlawyers are still south of 75 K. And that's where they'll likely stay until they leave the law behind for good.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 9:39, and I've been around the legal block a few times.

However, the one exception in shitaw, to a lifetime of embarrassing poverty is to become a successful personal injury lawyer.

One big case can land you six figures and many are in the million dollar verdict club.

I interviewed at two PI firms in 2005, both of them had multiple million dollar verdict club members and the parking lot was filled with Range Rovers and Porsche 911 Turbos.

The problem is you need to be completely devoid of having a conscience and be willing to sell your mother out.

Sadly most people who attempt PI work fail miserably, because its very high risk, and end up dancing on the breadline.

Here is the truth about law and your future in it from someone who KNOWS:

There are just a few routes that your "legal career" will take, despite what career services at your school will tell you. It is VERY RARE to get those BigLaw, big salary jobs. Those who do are constantly stressed out and are honestly some of the biggest assholes and brown-nosing butt lickers I have ever dealt with and NO, I am not saying that out of jealousy. I am thankful every day I didn't get one of these jobs even though I went to a good school because I know now I hate law and want out and it would've been hard with that kind of salary to get off the hamster wheel. If you get one of these, you'll do great financially for a while but a lot of these folks burn out early. Plus, there is the nasty matter of widespread layoffs in BigLaw and I've done doc review with a lot of these former associates who are now making $20 an hour like the rest of us.

You might work for a "small firm" or shitlaw. I did this and quit after 2 months. The asshole, self-important, morbidly obese partner would not even let me off for 2 days to visit a relative from Europe who was having her first visit to the States. It was not that I was needed so badly because he only had like 10 cases and all I did was cut n paste anyway - he did it just to show me he COULD. Screw him - I quit.

You might wind up a "solo." Some solos do well, no doubt. A lot of PI solos do very well but like the previous poster said you have to have little shame. If you like money more than self-respect, go for it. If you are a normal "solo" it's hard to get cases, you get a lot of calls from people shoppin' around for the bargain basement price and do a lot of free consults that never come of anything. I even have people tell me they just needed to see me to find out how to "do it themselves." You may wind up a "sad sack lawyer" making $35K a year going this route. This is me right now, but not for long. I'm getting out. I put out an ad not too long ago to find another lawyer who might want to help me out covering hearings and got at least 75 resumes from people with great credentials, good schools, etc. willing to work for CHEAP. This is the state of law right now.

I know this post is long, but I have been needing to say this stuff for a while to those thinking of law school and to those who have been burned by law and may still be drinking the Kool-Aid and thinking there is still a chance to be successful. No doubt, there is, and if you love law then go for it and best of luck to you. But realistically, law has turned into a low-rent game for the most part. The once respected profession is way too oversaturated and in my area there are lawyers putting up offices in trailer homes (yes! trailer homes!) and store fronts everywhere. THINK before going to law school. It may just be better to find something else to do.

He had a great career in firms and in-house but got laid off and his retirement is now eviscerated so he's doing doc review, hoping he can get all the overtime he can and the project will last, he has no retirement and no health benefits. I feel sorry for these poor folks and wish them well, but I refuse to be them.

What does Lifer think about this post?

Anonymous said...

Lifer, why did you spend your whole career in document review and not apply to Melli, Guerrin, and Wall?

Anonymous said...

Watch out for mean, sleazy GROSS small firm lawyers and partners - eeeeeeew, some of them are very smarmy and slimy weasals - and they definitely like to hit on women! No attractive woman should work for these sleazoids - it's like keeping flies off honey. Unlike BigLaw, small firm partners are desperadoes and scary creatures!! Many look and act like the Hispanic dude running the local bodega - just as much class and looks!!

Lifer said...

Well, you may not want to be a lifer, and if shit hits the fan you might not have the option to be. Really, the US is bankrupt, so who knows how society will handle it. Will there be anything we take for granted if the dollar standard is lost? Maybe, look at the pound and Euro... I suppose anything is possible.

That said, NYC is maybe the worst place to be to weather this storm, so we're kinda fucked, and I think anyone that isn't simply making as much as they can, planning for some future retirement or career or whatever, is overlooking just how many of these tall office buildings will be empty by 2010.

If you can make the most now temping, do that, spend prudently, and scout cheap homes in the Midwest. Absolutely do not pay Sallie Mae.

Anonymous said...

I was walking on lower Broadway yesterday and it finally struck me how many boarded up stores there were.

I then strolled up into midtown and noticed that the sidewalks were noticeably empty.

I finally realized that the media was lying to us once again. We are entering the 2nd Great Depression.

I agree with OP. Immediately defer your loans if you haven't done so already. Seek to slash your living expenses as quickly as possible. The storm hasn't even begun to rage.

Anonymous said...

Also, don't believe this GDP is improving nonsense. GDP is about as reliable and objective of an indicator as is Joan King's career statistics. The gov't is shitting in its pants knowing that the only way to save this economy is for people to be tricked into believing that the economy is good so that they would once again start spending money they don't have.

Lol the media.

(Chinese) cash for clunkers, think about it:

$4,500, and $4,500 discount to get a consumer to spend around $20,000. Well, not spend, BORROW (all cars are basically financed).

Basically the government is picking up 20% of the tab on cars people don't NEED (per terms of plan, car must be driveable).

So, taxes in the sum of $3bn to get people to BORROW $15 bn for cars they don't NEED.

The interest the companies earn will be less than what the Chinese will get, so we lose money there.

All this while each of these companies' cash-burn is $1bn+ a month.

We went into debt for a dead company. Like putting blood into someone shot in the face, while other people have flesh wounds and, oh yeah, it is borrowed blood we have to give back with interest.

Idiots.

Take it easy folks. It's good to stress out about a long-term career plan but don't take it too seriously. Joey Fontanamuccio, a friend of mine, climbed the long hard road to partnership and died of anal cancer last year. The poor fucker - left behind a huge mansion and wife with big melons. I live each day to the fullest - wine, women, song, the beach, occasional prayer and doc review. I'm sure something good will come along. It's important to stay relaxed and happy as well....

Use this time to get in shape, hit the beach and get laid ...summer is only two months long in NYC. Before you know it, reviews will start up again and you'll be back in the arms of some fugly old bitches...get some hot action now!!

"It is VERY RARE to get those BigLaw, big salary jobs."

Not really, you have to pay your dues for a few years than lateral, but people do it. Moreover, the pay in mid-size firms isn't bad.

"If you are a normal "solo" it's hard to get cases, you get a lot of calls from people shoppin' around for the bargain basement price and do a lot of free consults that never come of anything."

No it's not. You get the money from them before you do anything. Yeah, there's plenty of scumbag clients who won't pay a dime, but you don't do any work for them. 300 per hour, not 30. Or, you get 1/3 of the settlement. 10-12K for filing a few papers, an apperance or two, and waiting 6 months.

However, to do either of the above, you need experience. And you're not going to get that doc. reviewing.

"Not really, you have to pay your dues for a few years than lateral, but people do it. Moreover, the pay in mid-size firms isn't bad."

FLAME. You ain't going to lateral from biglaw to Melli Guerrin. Biglaw laterals you one way, right out the door.

Anonymous said...

Maybe you CAN lateral from some small or mid size firm into biglaw, but it's rare. It's also rare to even get that small or medium size firm job at all because there are so many lawyers, new ones becoming unemployed all the time and new ones being graduated/passing the bar every year and the employment rate for them in extremely low.

While it may look like I'd "have to" be a lifer temp or even work in doc review, not so. Honestly, I would rather shovel shit than work in law again, in any capacity. It sickens me. I will do some respectable job that may not make a lot of money but at least allows me to have a life and work around decent people.

McShill is absolutely DEAD ON. Unfortunately, it's the human condition to play the victim and blame everyone else. It's a fact that it's downright tough out there. However, if you just complain, blame, b**ch and moan, get into racist rants, you will remain unproductive. The funny thing is that most of the people who are ranting and complaining now, are the same ones who ranted and complained when the job market was actually decent. A few days ago I was speaking with a doc review attorney who did not even know what "Martindale" is?! Unbelievable! Perhaps doc review IS all that doc reviewers can do. That said, "if you only do what you've always done, you'll only get what you've always gotten." In support of McShill's argument, I attending a TTT and went from earning $45k in my first job to earning $110k four years later. I'm also almost done paying one of my loans and I've only been out of school 6 yrs. It CAN be done. Please, let the bashing begin...... lol

Two of the five let go are first-years.

Akerman Senterfitt was founded in 1920, and has grown to become one of the largest law firms in the United States. In 2008, the National Law Journal ranked the firm as 92nd largest in the US by number of attorneys, and the second-largest Florida-based firm.

The firm employs 500 lawyers across offices in Los Angeles, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Tallahassee, West Palm Beach, New York City, Washington DC; Tyson’s Corner, Virginia; and Madison, Wisconsin.

Bad credit? Forget about getting a job:
It is generally legal to run credit checks on job applicants, but some states have restrictions. In Washington, which has perhaps the most stringent requirement, a candidate’s credit history must be substantially related to the job under a law that took effect in 2007.

Skip to next paragraph Readers' Comments
Readers shared their thoughts on this article.
Read All Comments (251) »Last month, lawmakers in Hawaii approved a measure that generally allows an employer to review a credit history only after making an offer and requires the credit check to be “directly related” to job qualifications.

In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar law. (New York law requires a background check’s findings to be related to the job, but it addresses criminal records and does not mention credit checks.)

Lawmakers in Michigan and Ohio have proposed barring employers from using credit history in making employment decisions.

“In my opinion, it’s discrimination,” said Representative Jon Switalski, the Democrat who proposed legislation in Michigan. “If you miss a few payments or you have medical debt, your skills as a pipefitter or an electrician don’t diminish.”

Courts have not been sympathetic to claims that discrimination is being cloaked in credit checks, said Angela Onwuachi-Willig, a law professor at the University of Iowa. “At what point does the fact that someone lives in a particular neighborhood or someone has a bad credit score become a way of eliminating people for illegal grounds?” she asked rhetorically. “Basically, the courts don’t protect against proxy discrimination.”

Stuart J. Ishimaru, the acting chairman of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said the commission would probably issue guidance on the proper use of credit checks. Such guidance, though nonbinding, could offer some reassurance against lawsuits to employers who comply.

“It’s something that intrigues us and worries us,” Mr. Ishimaru said, adding that some job-related tests had led to discrimination claims in the past. “The question is, why do you use it? How is this a good screening device?”

Federal law requires employers to get the consent of job applicants before running credit checks, said Pamela Q. Devata, a lawyer in the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw.

And if they are considering denying someone a job based on a check, she said, “they have to notify the applicant.” That is intended to give someone a chance to explain circumstances or spot erroneous information.

When the job market improves and fewer people are fighting for slots, credit histories may become less important, said Michael C. Lazarchick, a career counselor in Pleasantville, N.J. “But these are lean and mean times.”

This GayLard sounds like a real ass. Tiny Tim operates the same way at S&C. He also has a tiny dong - a mere thimble - you need the Hubble telescope to see it. He also hits on and dates several temps because he is too much of a sad middle-aged loser to go out and date properly. To temps toilet law school "staff attorney" seem like God - obvious hallucination result of being cloistered in radiation basement for 80 hours a week. Because he has nothing to offer, Tiny sobs on about his ex-wife, his family, his peers, everyone but himself. You just want to shoot this loser out of misery. Idiot temps who have succumbed to his sob stories have done so at their own peril - they go insane!! This fella is TROUBLE. He will sniff anything with a vagina-temp, goat, chicken, melon.

S&C has become loserville at the staff level. At associate and above it is ruthless but smart and hard-working.

It is truly a shock to see the kind of people they hire as staff attorneys and temp to perm paras. Loser, ghetto etc. The standards have gone down largely because of the managment headed by Fig the Pig and Gary the loser, both who are awed by really qualified people - don't have the confidence to manage them and don't like to hire them- what do these losers really know? Both came on as temps, from some thatched hut in the Caribbean. They are happy with ass kissing Anus, Gaylard, Big Mamma etc. and that knife wielding slasher bitch who made it to associate. The team would have been different under smarter more confident management. Fig acts "smart" but he acts like a low-level bureaucrat acts "smart" - not like a really smart person acts smart - which is not acting at all.

Sleazy outsourcer Rio Tinto is in trouble again. Seems the Chinese govt is on these corrupt morons. Talk about management running a company into the ground! From today's NYT,

"China Accuses Rio Tinto of Long-Term Conspiracy

By DAVID BARBOZA
Published: August 9, 2009
SHANGHAI — China said Sunday that it had evidence showing that for at least six years, employees working for the British-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto had engaged in commercial espionage, costing the country about $120 billion.

The sensational allegation was published on a Web site affiliated with China’s State Secrets Bureau, which detained four Rio Tinto employees, including an Australian citizen, in Shanghai last month on suspicions of espionage and stealing state secrets from the country’s huge, government-controlled steel industry. The comments marked the first time that China had suggested that the case involved a long-running conspiracy.

The case has strained China’s relations with Australia and rocked China’s steel industry, which purchases billions of dollars’ worth of iron ore every year from Rio Tinto and other huge mining companies.

The detentions have also thrown China’s annual negotiations with the world’s biggest iron ore producers into chaos at a time when demand for iron ore and steel is soaring in China because of an economic recovery. Iron ore is a key ingredient in steel.

Multinational corporations operating in China have also grown concerned because there could be serious risks for executives gathering information or doing business with state-owned Chinese companies.

Rio Tinto officials could not be reached Sunday for comment. But the company has strongly denied any wrongdoing in the case. The British-Australian company BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest mining company and also a major supplier of iron ore, declined to comment.

The new allegations, published by the National Administration for the Protection of State Secrets in China, named only Rio Tinto but suggested that all foreign iron ore suppliers had benefited from fraud committed by Rio Tinto employees.

The major iron ore producers generally follow the same benchmark price set during annual negotiations. The article offered very few details but said evidence China had found on Rio Tinto computers showed that the company had gathered extensive intelligence on China’s steel industry and that the information it acquired had given the company an edge in setting annual benchmark prices for iron ore over the past six years.

“The computer data Rio Tinto staff held showed that they have gained extensive, detailed inside information on the steel industry,” the article said, “and were definitely spying on China’s economic interests and security.”

The price of iron ore has skyrocketed in China during that period; it peaked in 2008 at more than $200 a ton. But analysts have generally attributed the price increase to soaring demand from China’s fast-growing steel industry, which is now the world’s largest.

China, however, contends that the price was manipulated, costing the government-controlled steel industry an additional $120 billion.

In earlier statements, China had accused Rio Tinto employees of stealing confidential information by bribing Chinese steel mill executives. Australian officials said recently that the four Rio employees had been detained largely because of their role in this year’s iron ore negotiations.

Legal scholars have expressed surprise that China detained the four Rio Tinto employees on state secrets suspicions rather than for commercial spying. Under Chinese law, violating state secrets is much more serious and very difficult to defend against, partly because much of the evidence is not made public.

I had an interview on Friday with an ugly recruiter with a moustache and fat calves. First she tells me she wants me to fill out 20 forms at home, print them and bring them in when I come to see her. Then three copies of my resume. Bitch what are you going to do? Stroke my dick? I am unemployed, spending $15-20 at Kinkos everytime I have an interview and nothing even comes of it!!! What the fuck are you doing? You have a job, a company and a printer. Give me the fucking forms and I'll fill them out the old fashioned way. Fuck this shit. I am tired of these ugly broads and this ugly system. Working at Home Depot is looking better and better.

The vast majority of recruiters are parasitic scum. There are a few good ones out there, but any monkey with a phone can be a recruiter.

Now I just ignore them. Unless you are a current/former biglaw associate/partner, engaging a recruiter will be a waste of time.

Don't feel too bad. Next Thursday I have an interview with a recruiter who looks like the love child of Rosie O'Donnell and Shemp from the Three Stooges. She also inists on speaking in faux-pirate dialect, with a lot of "Arrrrghhs" and "Mateys"... and her left hand is a hook.

Her names is Bernice. Watch out for her. She insists that if she gives you an assignment, you take her out on a date with some of the money from your first paycheck... or you don't get a second.

It's impossible to talk to these aspiring lawyers and law school applicants. They always think "We know better." "Just because you are a failure doesn't mean I will be". "I am getting the degree because it's a good thing to have when you are doing something else." "I don't plan to do corporate I am going pro bono anyway." (by third year no one is) "It's prestigious." "I have a liberal arts degree and need to differentiate myself." (question: why didn't you get a B.A. in business or computer science? i.e. piling one mistake onto another?

Now I know the purpose of this blog - to engage in "gallows humor." It's really very good therapy when one is in a bad situation, like being let go in two mass layoffs as I was. I recall one guy doing spreadsheets showing how we could feed our families for $500 a year, by drinking only water and eating only macaroni and cheese.

Yeah, a B.A. in Business Administration: great way to distinguish yourself from the 40% of all college graduates with a B.A./B.S. in Business Administration. And please--let's not even start with the IT/coding outsourcing plague. It makes LPOs look like a walk in the park
