Philadelphia Market Shriveling Up & Dying
35 people laid off at Dechert's 2 Logan location in relevance two weeks ago.
5 people laid off in privilege, as above
5 more people laid off in privilege last week.
Some people had been there as long as 4.5 years. Some say scores were settled.
Staff attorney hours also seem to have been cut back among many as well.
This is the pharmaceutical litigation site.
Project is believed to be engaged in end-stage activities.

As much as I feel bad that people have to do this kind of work to survive, (I've been there as well), this person is a complete moron....its called "a temp" job for a reason..its not full time even if people have been there for more than 365 days. Cases end at some point. Get on another project somewhere or go try to learn an area of law that you can try to do some cases, try to something, anything on the side to bring in some income, law or not. If you can't, ask Father Eamon for some heavy duty prayers.
Agreed - temps are just overflow workers. Further to say because a few temps reached the end of the road that the Philly market is doomed.
There is still a lot of work in philly. Continuous hyberbole and wailing over the loss of each and every contract position does no good to our cause.
Theses are not equivalent to associate or other perm staff.in fact, they're not even layoffs. Its just the inevitable end of the line for these temps. They knew on the first day that it would end this way.
Stop whining. Even the priv team got work longer than most temps. Theses clickers will find new work, let's not bemoan their fight as if they are Dechert associates. They aren't.
Hi, Dechert!
Hi, Mr. Vlad!
Day-O
"tally me banana/ Daylight come and me wanna go home."
"Continuous hyberbole and wailing over the loss of each and every contract position does no good to our cause."
FUCK YOU!
A lot of people are out of work. The remaining jobs have the rates and hours being constantly pushed down, or taken over by New York-barred Nigerian LLM's, hired by the pimp agencies to replace CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY. The Nigerians aren't even grateful, they're the scum of the earth, hence their country being consistently rated the worst in the world. That's only for one reason - shit people=shit country.
This is all true -- I was among the laid-off. It sucks, but there really is no work left to do, so what are Dechert's options? Should they retain us just because we're well-trained and competent? They didn't even do that for their own associates and paralegals.
Fuck you with your "stop whining" and "these clickers will find new work." Don't you get it? It's over. There are very, very few jobs for clickers out there unless you want to go to India - I hear there are plenty of jobs for clickers there. In case you haven't noticed, there aren't many jobs of any kind out there in this country. If I was a youngster (like you), I'd be stripping in a tittie bar to pay my bills about now. So cram it, you arrogant clown.
click..click..click..click..McCafe break..click..click...prayer is the answer..click click
Is Vlad still there? What is that ogre going to do if doc review ends?
Slave Ship Bob, how are you going to handle this situation in Philadelphia?
Philly is prety dry these days as far as document review is concerned. As noted the Dechert 2 Logan project is winding down. The MLB basement is empty, though there are a few coders working in 1735 Market. The off-site Providus review was cut to a skeleton crew. Reed Smith is over. There is a plaintiff's securities litigation gig going on in Wilmington DE. I hear Dupont is also running a review down there. The Stradley review is still ongoing, though I hear it's miserable and they have cut the rate. MMWR has nothing going on right now.
Does anyone know if the Dechert off-site review in Liberty place is still ongoing?
Dear 9:44AM - you claim that there is plenty of work in Philly right now - please provide a couple of examples - you don't have to out yourself, just provide examples of this plentiful work -
or is that you, Denise A.?
"Aw, fuck you! Fuck the lot of you! Fuck you all!"
Philly, you can keep Denise Asnes, or Fisher, or whatever her name is.
Well I'm glad I secured my gig at Starbucks. It's not intellectually stimulating - I spend most of my days slurping Frappucinos on the sly, discussing Flo Rida and Micheal Jackson with the high school dropouts and stealing toilet paper - but at least I get out.
Starbucks have cut their training classes in half. I was informed by a manager that if you don't get into one of these training sessions, you won't have a chance of landing in BIGCoffee. Life in SMALLCoffee is a bitch.
I agree with the first poster.
Quit you're whining. You know it's a temp job. You could be sending out resumes from the job trying to find something permenant.
Stop treating a temp job like it's a permenant job. It's not. As for the people that have been temping 4 years on the same project. What in the hell are you thinking? You should have been able to find something in that period of time.
The Nigerians are masters at manipulation. They con the agencies and firms into believing that they are innocent and are merely here to work hard to achieve the American dream. Little do they realize that the minute they look away, the Nigerians are on the cell phones flipping houses, or engaging in scams right out of the office.

The racist fuck-twats on this blog need anger management classes to address their entitlement issues.
On a serious note, I certainly hope Deinse Asnes stays in Philly. Having her and Andrew Rider in the NYC office of Hirecounsel would certainly be the end of days.
I hear the LA office of Hirecounsel is recruiting for NYC. I guess they tossed all their other recruiters?
Hey everybody! Business as usual on Monday....
It's ok, Philly, I know the feeling.
2 Logan is closing? I wonder if this means that Simon is getting canned?
Dechert isn't just layoff people in so-called "temp" jobs; ATL just reported that around 25 associates are being let go today, in addition to "a bunch" of paralegals, staff attorneys and legal secretaries. Clearly, this is not just effecting overflow workers, and there is NOT still a lot of work in Philly or anywhere else.
I'm working.
Well look for Better Coder making cheesesteaks at one the lesser known delis in philly.
When you see him back there give him a shout and ask for a double cheese.
He got laid off last week from dechert and fired from his Better Burger gig.
Yo yo yo bettah codah! Keep it real bro!
POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!
I'm working.
I'm working.
I'm working.
I'm working.
I'm working.
Put a gun to your fucking head like I did and pull the trigger.
Or hit the beach like I did yesterday! Man, all those cheesburgers I have been eating while coding - I could barely get into my speedo. Time to share them with Big Mamma - the burgers, I mean.
12:18. I am in BIG Coffee biaaaaaatch!!!!

I wonder what will happen to VLAD. He is a personable guy, so I imagine he will always have job offers.
What ever happened to Dave King? Last I heard he was coding in NYC.
I must admit I liked Vlad and never quite understood why many people woould bitch about him at the Newark project. DK on the ooyher hand was a piece of work.

What we need in america is to kick out the foreigners and hang a bunch of rich people and their lapdog politicians and media talking heads.
Can anyone who is in the know in Philadelphia giov a comprehensive run down of what projects are actually still up and running here? I would sure like to know. I haven't worked in months and it's a bit disconcerting.
what document reviews are currently going on in NYC?
Why the reluctance to inform us,?
fuk the foreigners!!!!!
go back to the jungle!
Um,
hey guys. Big Announcement! Can I get everyones attention, um. Hey, wow. What fun. Just wanted to let everyone know that the client wants to say thanks. Okay, and take a minute to clean your work areas.

best thing this depression could do is bring up some white power movements! That is what the Jews, Asians and nigerians already have and do for each other, BUT god forbid some middle class whites look out for each other.... Then it is some sort of 'ism.
thanks rich liberal children of privilege for screwing over the white man.
either find a rich wife and abuse her privileged ass or white power!
I reluctantly agree. I believe the playing field is more than level. I mean they got cabinet posts, supreme court, corporations etc.,, and that colored boy in the white house looks more black than Arab to me.
I mean shit, what if whites had all those high power jobs and cried about and demanded affirmative action programs and extra benefits to get ahead!

This blog sucks! You're all a bunch of idiots!
Some sad angry white sociopath is spamming this blog -- and it should be cleaned up.
Sorry white boy that it is your system and even they say you are not good enough -- so you have to take out your hate on others.
That must hurt - when your own system denies you. I am a "colored boy" so it's ok for me to fail your system - but you, that is painful.
I feel sorry for you, monkey boy.
I liked VLAD. David King was a pretentious phony. Vlad was grumpy sometimes, but you knew what you were getting.
No, oh No.... Yeah, Yeah ... oh..
You look in my eyes and I get emotional inside
I know it’s crazy, but you still can touch my heart
And after all this time you think that I wouldn’t feel the same
But time melts into nothing, and nothing's changed
I still believe
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves
In love again
I had a dream
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves
In love again
Each day of my life, I’m filled with all the joy I could find
You know that I,I'm not the desperate type
If there’s one spark of hope left in my grasp, I'm holding it with both
hands
It’s worth the risk of burning, to have a second chance
No, no, no, no, no, no, I need you, baby
I still believe that we can be together, no…
If we believe that true love never has to end
Then we must know that we will love again, Mmm..
I still believe
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves
In love again (Oh, baby, yeah)
I had a dream
You and me
Will find ourselves
In love again
I still believe (Ooh, baby, I do)
Someday you and me (Just give me one more try)
In love again
I had a dream (I miss your love)
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves
In love again
I still believe
Someday you and me(will find ourselves in love...)
A special thanks to all of you Philly fucktards who thought you were too good to drive (rolling of the eyes) 27 miles south to work in Wilmington (the horror!). I'm really busy at my job down here. I'll have some Grotto's Pizza tonight in your honor.
M'kay, thanks, bye.
Blawgs are reporting that Fulbright & Jaworski has laid off six associates and four staff at its Los Angeles office.
Five of the associates targeted were first-years.
Today Dechert, which laid off 63 lawyers and 62 staff in March, let go a significant number of associates, plus paralegals, staff attorneys and legal secretaries.
The firm has not made any official announcement or released precise numbers, but blawgs with sources inside the firm suggest that 25 associates were let go.
Was Simon Nagel one the associates Dechert axed?
This Vlad, is he the same guy who worked at S&C? Big black guy looked like a bouncer, muscular. De Novo man. If it's him I think we looked at King magazine and compared lady rumps - and I am not even black or a man!! Yep, he's OK, seems like he's sexually alive which is always a good sign and makes you less scary [unlike Clovester]. But I think he still enjoys an occasional power trip and is not very knowing of his lowly status in life as a doc. review supervisor.
Maybe next time when Dechert is gracious enough to hire you bottom feeders, you will be more appreciative, and you won't call me up bitching about your on-site juvenile squabbles that paint both me and you in a negative light to the elite law firm clients.
One such juvenile squabble was about the size of your cunt, Recruiter.
I'm interested in this: "Some say scores were settled."
What kind of scores? I was under the impression that those in disfavor were pretty much all fired in the wake of the layoffs from the 2008 settlement.
6:07 - Every project fires people in the same way. Things settle or slow down and then the hatchet comes out. The people the supervisors don't like get shafted first. Then, the agency does a careful racial/age quota calculation to balance out the makeup of the termination.
I survived. Thanks to sucking the supervisor's dick during break. Whew!
Vlad is a big bald Russian guy who worked on the big McCarter project in Newark. He was one of the two project managers.
Lifer was at Dechert. I used to walk home with her late at night. I don't think anyone would be bold enough to mug someone walking with an old lady.
Where is Lifer?? Is she even alive??
She's around. She's probably working and they blocked her internet access. Lifer needs to work overtime because Sallie Mae has been garnishing her social security checks.
"Some people had been there as long as 4.5 years. Some say scores were settled."
F off.
Oh man, I feel so bad for Lifer. I hope she can still afford denture glue and Depends. What a shame.
So sad, so sad. I cried for Michael Jackson and I will cry for Lifer...time for another Haagen Daz.
blacks are dumb
white power!
Whitey troll, get off of here and go listen to Michael Savage.
The dumb bores are back. Get lost motherfuckers. Bring back the fun guys - the Big Mamma stories.
S&C quiz #1
Q: Why is Valvina Scissorhands known by this name?
A: Because she cut up co-worker paralegal/her boyfriend's clothes in small cubes after she found out he was shagging her "best friend" -a temp gal. Best part is this was done at work.
Oh, and para manager David F. didn't think she was too crazy to hire!! Because her torpedo ghetto boobs were in his face.
It's one thing to slash clothes and quite another to cut them up in small cubes. Lawd that was one crazy bitch!!
S&C is like a psycho ward.
Yeah but Philly IS a psycho ward.
"Aw, fuck you! Fuck the lot of you! Fuck you all!"

Tom, thanks for the Philly love. It's always nice to be noticed.
God help you if you are a single attractive lady working with Big Mamma at S&C. This wooly mammoth will come after you with a scimitar, cellulite thighs a jigglin'.
She one crazy dog.
Michael Savage is a genious. He is the only talk show host who can hold my interest.
He is a medicated dumbfuck like the rest of them.

The rapid changes in society caused by technology and bad public policy have had some negative side effects, to say the least. When computers began to come on like gangbusters, the big influential brains foresaw a brilliant future for America based on information technology. That vision might have been more accurate if not for outsourcing and cheap H-1b labor, but a Jetsons meme took hold, and the educational system retooled and re-imagined accordingly. No more icky manufacturing spewing dirt into the air: America's future would be white-collar, educated and take place in a clean comfy office.
And as the knowledge economy looked increasingly like the hip New Wave, the blue-collar people producing things in factories became seen as old-fashioned and expendable.
A contributing factor was the rush to outsourcing that ripped the heart out of America's manufacturing base. Business discovered cheap and exploitable labor offshore, and millions of middle-class blue-collar citizens were kicked aside. There was great suffering, but elites didn't care because the affected people hadn't graduated from college and therefore didn't matter much. Anyway, that sparkly new future beckoned.
For those jobs that couldn't be sent abroad to be done by exploitable non-Americans, the gates were unofficially opened to millions of legal and illegal foreigners, who came with a "Kick Me/ Pay Me Less" sign.
The dismantling of American manufacturing was well documented in the popular 1992 book, America: What Went Wrong?. By Donald L. Barlett and James Steele. The book started out as a newspaper series in the Philadelphia Inquirer and generated the paper's largest ever reader response: 20,000 letters, calls and requests for reprints back in the days before email.
(The authors later authored the much-noticed 2004 Time Magazine cover story on the porous border—and were subsequently let go in one of those coincidental media downsizings, another example of how bad things seem to happen to professional journalists who write critically about immigration).
Along with the changes in the way America made a living came a change in attitude. The class division between blue and white collar enlarged. It didn't help that the blue-collar middle class was shredded by the twin evils of immoderate immigration and outsourcing.
The immigration part of the equation further downgraded the status of workers. Jobs that were once performed by Americans were increasingly occupied by foreigners receiving lower wages and laboring in workplaces that had become more dangerous. A generation of young Americans in many locales has grown up thinking that foreigners build houses and work in meatpacking plants. However, just a couple of decades earlier, those same occupations provided middle-class lives for previous generations.
Good sense is a rare commodity in public life these days, but there is a definite wave of resistance forming up against the rejection of honest work. The failure of the knowledge economy to bring a prosperity paradise has propelled growing doubt about how the work world has been redesigned, and people wonder what has been lost. Plus the new world of sterile cubicles has turned out to be unsatisfying to the human spirit.
A significant indicator has been the attention stirred up by Matthew B. Crawford's recent book Shop Class as Soulcraft, coming from sources as dissimilar as the Washington Post and Popular Mechanics.
It helps that the author has quantifiable intellectual cred—a PhD in political philosophy—so he has been taken seriously by the book reviewer set. A tough job market for professors set him on a path toward repairing motorcycles and reflecting on the value of manual labor. The May 24 New York Times Magazine carried his essay titled, The Case for Working with Your Hands.
"The trades suffer from low prestige, and I believe this is based on a simple mistake. Because the work is dirty, many people assume it is also stupid. This is not my experience. I have a small business as a motorcycle mechanic in Richmond, Va., which I started in 2002. I work on Japanese and European motorcycles, mostly older bikes with some “vintage” cachet that makes people willing to spend money on them. I have found the satisfactions of the work to be very much bound up with the intellectual challenges it presents. And yet my decision to go into this line of work is a choice that seems to perplex many people.
After finishing a Ph.D. in political philosophy at the University of Chicago in 2000, I managed to stay on with a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the university’s Committee on Social Thought. The academic job market was utterly bleak. In a state of professional panic, I retreated to a makeshift workshop I set up in the basement of a Hyde Park apartment building, where I spent the winter tearing down an old Honda motorcycle and rebuilding it. The physicality of it, and the clear specificity of what the project required of me, was a balm. "
As someone who has lived in both worlds, Crawford has the academic vocabulary and the experience to comment on the ingenuity required in automotive repair. (If you have listened to Car Talk, NPR's humorous radio program of vehicle diagnosis presented by MIT graduates Tom and Ray Magliozzi, you already know that smarts are necessary to interpret mechanical symptoms.)
It has always been a lie for the Open Borders crowd to say there are jobs Americans won't do (wages go curiously unmentioned). But it would be more difficult to foist that fabrication on a less class-conscious society.
Immigrants can pack up and go home because more Americans are coming to understand they were never needed in the first place.
12:06 am. Alex Gayllard is probably being treated for venerial disease. He will be back at work soon.
Wolf Block, a prominent 106 year-old Philadelphia law firm, folded this year.
And that's only part of the massive meltdown in the Philly legal community.
All over the place firms are closing, downsizing dramatically, laying off scores of attorneys. The bloodletting is continuing...
Soon there will be one lawyer in Philadelphia. His name will be Irving Stein, and he will have one client, his mother. When his mother dies, he will close his office and lay himself off, and then leave town. And then there will be no lawyers in Philadelphia.
No "Philadelphia lawyers"...
All in all, I'd rather not be in Philadelphia.
When I was on the Vioxx case at 65 Broadway, we thought of our Philly counterparts as functionally retarded, which is true because they sucked at coding, but funny because there were people that wadded up TP in the stalls at 65.

This blog is worthless.
Shut it down.
I heard that 2 Logan is shutting down and that most of the temps and staff have been let go.
The Dechert pharmaceutical project at Philadelphia recently (perhaps 7/27/09) sent all of relevance home to await a call back that might be next week.
As to other posts and questions that were presented, the "some scores settled" means the belief that inter-personal agendas were acted upon.
As to people who cry about "whining" over a temp job change, get over yourself. There is no such whining.
As to the unrelated items posted such as mockery, and racialist screeds, etc., you're acting stupidly.
the relevance people were also called back after three days out. could have been worse, I guess. All the same, the vibe at 2 Logan is that this project is just about over.
I was contacted by Fei Zhong of New York Hire Counsel about a temp legal position for a registration meeting. After the meeting I was told that the client was looking for more of a legal support background. I was then contacted again by Andrew Rider for yet another registration meeting for the same position. After that, I see another of the very same job posting, without any mention of a legal support background necessary! Why not just read a person's resume and then discern what experience they have from that?
