Admitted Attorney Going Rate - $10 An Hour

Hi Tom,

I worked as a temp for about 4 years and now I have been unemployed
for about 6 months off and on collecting unemployment.

Yesterday, I applied for a job on craigslist for an attorney
position in queens. I will attach the part of the email with out my
name as to save myself embarrassment as I know people who read your
blog. $10 a fucking hour, I could make more working at McDonalds.

"Dear Candidate,

The starting salary is $10 per hour, $15 per hour overtime, but
will increase upon demonstration of capability. If you are interested,
please email us back the dates that you are available for an interview
this week.

Wang Law Firm"

Quickly, when is New York going to use taxpayer funds to open that new law school? We need more lawyers! Desperate need for attorneys out there.

Anonymous said...

hey, know the industry before you enter law school, the jokes on you, Top 50 law schools or bust!

Anonymous said...

Does this mean that Joan King didn't tell me the truth?

it costs 25 dollars to post a craigslist job ad, so this is a real job offer.

Supply and demand rules the roost.

The supply of lawyers from non-elite law schools far exceeds the demand, so therefore the wage has dropped and dropped and dropped as the oversupply of lawyers increases

Has anybody been waiting on a project with DiscoverReady. I have never in my life witnessed such pathological liars. I cannot count on 2 hands how many times they have PROMISED that a project will start at a given time. Its beyond inhumane.

Has anyone tried FreelanceLaw.com that offers to hook-up contract people with law firms? Any experiences???

Anonymous said...

Go away, freelancelaw.com.

$10 an hour might be a realistic pay rate for a new lawyer with no experience. I have a new summer student in my firm, and I hate to say it, but he's definitely slowing me down. I need to hand hold him on everything. The learning curve for new lawyers is tremendous. Practically every sentence in a motion or contract needs to be scrutinized by a senior lawyer and re-written. Eventually everyone catches on and learns how to draft motions, write contracts, and take depositions. But for the first year, $10 per hour might actually be generous.

Don't blame employers for the fact that 4th tier law schools are charging $50,000 per year tuition to teach them useless bullshit about the rule against perpetuities and 17th Century estuary rights, and lying to students about the average starting salaries.

It's not that Joan King was lying, it was merely that she was mistaken. She mistakenly added 4 zeros to the ten dollar figure. Early onset dementia.

any attorney or jd must look to craig's list for job opportunities and such. other sites are useless.

Blame the nigerians and "fireignors" for everything, I say.

Shift the blame, shift the pain...

The only Rule Against Perpetuities that's relevant in a TTT law school is the rule that says the only perpetuity that you'll encounter after graduating from one of 'em is perpetual debt.

POLL:

Which job would you rather have:

1) Associate in a Shitlaw PI firm in Queens for a year, at $10/hour, but you get to sleep with a hot Latina secretary now and then

2) Associate at the best firm in Lagos, Nigeria at $200/hour for a year, but you can't leave Nigeria during that time, and you have to live in a "normal" apartment, eat local food, and socialize almost entirely with the locals

3) Living in Sri Lanka for a year, teaching English to Buddhist monks for $10/day

4) Working as an assistant to a sleazy bail bondsman in Vegas for a year, making $2000/week (tax free), but you have to live in a scummy motel downtown frequented by drug fiends and cheap hookers, and your slimy criminal clients include child molesters and axe murderers

$10.00 !! I can't fucking feed myself on $10.00 an hour !! I'd rather collect unemployment and donate my time to a charity.

I'd rather work at Starbucks.

I will take job number one, or in this case "numero uno.".

I am Nigerian LLM. Do not hire this entitled whitey. Better us we work hard have many degree. And we act like your friend.
I take $10 with great appreciation. My wife is a hooker you can have her service too big tit for your partner.

Anonymous said...

Look out for number one I learned in New York. I take $10. Only thing matters is I look better than other people.

Temps - always an excuse for doing what they do.

I am the person who emailed this topic to Tom. The womans website address is www.meiguofa.com

On the front page of her website (there is only two pages) there is a news article about her representing someone who sued Apple for one million because apple cut the price of there iPhone for a couple of hundred bucks.

Imagine getting paid $10 an hour and have to show up to court with that bullshit case. I know there are plenty of bullshit cases, but this one takes the cake. Read the article.

The "supply" of attorneys prior to the start of the recession is about the same as it is now. Wages held steady for a long time in most locations. When money got tight, ruthless clients and partners probably didn't think twice about sending work to India. When money is no longer tight, do you think these same individuals will bring that work back to the US? Not unless the courts make them do so. The ABA isn't going to make Biglaw do anything - they are Biglaw's whore. Unless the courts put a stop to outsourcing, we are going to find ourselves s.o.l. at WalMart & McDonald's.

You people are sooooooo delusional about outsorcing.

But I agree 10 an hour is getting ridiculous. All that will happen is someone will take it and the money and immediatly jump.

Anonymous said...

Don't underestimate the number of temps who wont leave for fear of ruining their goodwill. Idiots!

Anonymous said...

Time to fight fire with fire, people. I say, flood these law firms with fake resumes. Have them waste time calling the phone numbers on these fake resumes.

Anonymous said...

12:54,

What a dumb, imbecile idea! Are you f*c*ing useless and so off balance that you need to resort to elementary school tactics just to feel better? You dumb f*c*.

What a waste your life is.

Anonymous said...

12:54 Good idea.

Anonymous said...

I make 7.75 an hour at a solo's office in midtown and I finished top 30%. You just have to keep telling yourself that one of the bigger firms will notice your sacrifice and pick up your resume.

$10/hour is a good rate.

Guhhhh!

Sorry, thought it was 1944 and I was "camping" in remote Eastern European locations.

Anonymous said...

hey, im working..great salary, good benefits..as a paralegal..LOL..skip law school..you'll make more as a glorified secretary and the attorneys treat you better than temp jd's...sadness

Anonymous said...

Refuse to work for $10 per hour and demand your normal billing rate of $300-400 per hour! Attorney minds deserve only the top money! Law school is expensive and must be rewarded!!!

If your current field is over saturated why don't you take some time off to retrain?

You could get an associates degree in two years and get on the job training assisting an anesthesiologist or become a licensed HVAC serviceman/woman.

Your loans would be deferred until you retrained to a viable career.
