The Mill

I started a new project today. You probably can't tell just by reading this but I am utterly exhausted. All I want to do is go to bed and cry. Once again, the agency lied to me. Although the physical infastructure of the project was adequate, the atmosphere was absolutely stringent. There was no telephone, internet, or any other communication allowed with the outside world. You MUST work 60-70 hours a week and you MUST arrive by 9a.m. Also, you MUST take an hour lunch and you MUST leave at 8p.m. Although you MUST work until 8p.m., there was, of course, no dinner or transportation provided. The project was an absolute mill. The idea that an attorney will be able to competently undertake document review for six hours straight after working an 11 hour day in a hellhole is utterly preposterous. The corporate clients are in no way served by such a fictitious farce. What a complete and utter waste of time and money!

Tom, you truly are a communist. If you would have put in as much effort studying in law school as you do whining about your lot in life, you would have a plum biglaw associate job. You are living proof that liberal democrats are whiny pussy bitches. why dont you just quit and work for nypirg. no, better, go work for the hillary in '08 campaign. probably many like-minded thinkers in that crew.

The only thing I hate worse than arrogant biglaw associates are whiny pussy temp and contract associates.

I like how the prior comment is anonymous. Talk about pussy...

Anyways, the real question I guess is, why do you do this to yourself? I understand the whole contract thing (hell, I am doing it right now, secreted away from the real associates in my little cubicle as though I was Kobe beef waiting to be slaughtered... but I digress) but it seems to me you are making this a career instead of using it as a transition.

On the other hand, your current masters seem to be a bit on the Stalinist side of things.

It is interesting that you would think that I am a liberal when I have been so outspoken against the law schools and trial lawyers.

I'm at Paul Weiss, the wort of the worst. No intenet, no cell phone reception, 12 hours a day req. M-F, 10-6 Saturadys, for $21 an hour!
This blog and the jd jive board should be REQUIRED READING for all prospective law students. BTW, the above poster is a total idiot, there are some very smart and qualifed people slaving away at Weiss, incl. several grads of upper Tier One schools. The legal market in NYC is horrific. You either suck it up in doc. review and at east get pretty decent OT pay, or you go to a sleazebag solo or small PI/ins. defense or landlord/tenant firm and make 40-45 for almost the same hours, no benefits, and some slave-driving dirtbag partner on your back 24/7.

Ix-nay on cell phones, too?

"I worked my butt off in law school. I graduated in the top 5%, did law review, clinic, worked for three judges, everything. But I am still temping now because I can't even get interviews at places. Those "plum biglaw" jobs aren't there unless you know someone or summered there. Just so you know how it works."

Schmuck, I do know how it works. I work at a "Biglaw" firm. I went to a second tier law school, LR, top 10% yada yada. If you went to Tulane, grad-ed in top 5 was on LR and could not get a job, you are truly either retarded or have the worst case of halitosis on record. of course, chances are you went to lsu or se la st. or some ridiculous school like that.

perhaps the fact that you presumed that i dont know what im talking about speaks to your inability to get an interview. best regards,

i will say this----forcing you people to work 12 hours a day for $20 an hour is ridiculous. i work at most 10 hours a day and, well, am an actual associate. but if its any consolation, us associates are also very expendable, just less so that you temps.

and tom--sorry for presuming you're a liberal. but guy--this is a business. its here to make money. the free market, you know, the one that us conservatives love so much, dictates what you make. that is why, though you may deny being a liberal, you certainly arent a free market conservative. i suggest you to to the harvavrd extension institute to finish your masters in eastern slavic anthropology. barring that, go work for the ayn rand institute.

you make $20 an hour for working 12 hour days and its ME who is a total idiot? This is the logic which led you to where you are.

The bottom line is that temporary attorneys need to unionize. Think hiring hall.

Maybe so. I am not here to debate the free market. I respect your opinion. I would argue, however, that the legal profession is NOT a free market. It is a profession born out of regulation and it is a profession which needs complex, governmental regulation to survive. Also, for the free market to work people need accurate information. Obviously, accurate information is not being provided. Read my discussion below concerning NALP. Also, every corporation and client needs accurate information as to how there dollars and resources are being spent. Biglaw partners charging their clients over $200 an hour and pocketing the difference to have contract lawyers review sensitive company documents for 12 hours a day in sweatshops conditions is not a efficient way to use resources.

I believe in free and open debate and I don't believe in censorship. Unnecessary, cheap personal attacks from anonymous authors, however, will NOT be tolerated. I am not going to allow anonymous people to come on my blog and attack others.

if any of you really think there is a "free" market in this backwards ass excuse for a nation, you are floridly delusional...this is all about the politics of exclusion, patronage, nepotism, oppression of the Other, patriarchy, and the repressive ideological state apparatus which relegates poor minorities to the meat grinder to feed Cheney's fat ass with oil-laden blood money..wake up and smell the nafarious Starbucks....and eschew "the man" who keeps overly-credentialled cog-temps in white-collar sweatshops...the peasants TRULY are "revolting"...get a clue and foment the revolution, guys...

This site is amazing....I am getting my bar results back in a couple of weeks and can't believe I spent a 150k+ on going to law school. At least I had a hell of time on all that borrowed money....was pretty much 3 more years of college.
