25% Of Recent Law Graduates Work As Office Temps; Most Make Far Less Than $70,000 A Year

The NALP is finally starting to come clean. Their numbers are grossly distorted and flat out fraudulent.

i would say that a law graduate should be pleased to make $45,000.00.

102,000 is still a misleading figure. In all probability, if you graduate from a non T25 law school, you will make far less than $102,000 for the foreseeable future. This is a factual statement. Your salary will mor elikely be in the 40s-50s, assuming you can get a job.

@selling my jd
depends on what you were making before. 45k is less than a lot of engineers and scientists make, as well as (for no reason that i can understand) business majors.

Believe it or not, it's actually less than some teachers make.....that is not/not a viable salary point for someone who sat in a graduate/professional level school for three years....and receives a state license....sorry, but 40-45K is not acceptable....

Here's the press release:

4:24, it's "acceptable" when there's a labor surplus and there are so many more qualified, licensed attorneys than jobs. Salaries go down and stay down.

Once again, the problem can be boiled down to the fact that the law schools, especially the non-T14, are turning out too many graduates and continuing to flood the market.

Much like the BP oil disaster, the law school well must be capped before things can be cleaned up.

Nice BP well analogy.

Someone should be writing sample questions for the LSAT

Tell me about it!!! With all my looks and education it's been a total bitch to get a job in this economy. These days you have to pull out all the stops -- even with all my style, grace, wit and connections I have had to fight like a rabid pit bull to stay intact. I am making more than $70,000 but I have to work with ugly and boring people [not to mention odious saddlebag queens]- so by the time I get home I hardly feel joyous about making it.

Latest on "Jersey Shore"... Snooki says she wants "to go to law school and be a big hotshot attorney makin' like 300K!!!"

It's not "acceptable" but you'll take it to survive anyway.

Teachers are very well paid. Usually if someone bitches about their pay they have a great job and are paid pretty well. Doctors whine a lot too. You don't hear lawyers and fast food workers whine though.

In order to whine about pay you actually have to have a job and time. If you have those things, and have enough money that you can spend time relaxing, you are in a good spot in life. When you don't have money and have health problems and little time to be happy, you probably don't make enough money but you won't be able to get most of society to agree with you because they don't care.

I wonder if that 25% is, incidentally, the true employment rate. I also laugh at how the statistics are still set up to be deceiving. If 25% make less than $70k that must mean that 75% make more than that right? Well we all know that can't actually be right.

“Thomas Reddy, a second-year student at Brooklyn Law School, hasn't landed a summer internship yet after sending resumes to more than 50 law firms. He is taking on about $70,000 of debt each year of the three-year program to earn his degree, but said he may be fortunate to make $80,000 a year in a lawyer job after graduating. "That is less than what I was making before I went to law school," he said.”

Yes, Tommy, and since Salma Hayek is unavailable, I’ll be fortunate if Eva Mendes climbs on top of me and runs her wet tongue across my torso tonight. Reddy will basically graduate with an additional $210K in NON-DISCHARGEABLE debt from this fe$TTering dump, he has no job offers, and he thinks he will be lucky to find a job making $80K upon graduation?!?!

Illegal Alien- 7 bucks an hour. All off the books, of course. 1500x7= $10,000. Pops out anchor baby and/or enters into a marriage of convenience. Collects food stamps, welfare, and Medicaid.
A recent report concluded that in every state in the nation, welfare pays far more than a low-wage job. According to the report, "The value of the total package of benefits [received by AFDC recipients] relative to a job providing the same after-tax income ranges from a high of $36,400 in Hawaii to a low of $11,500 in Mississippi. In eight jurisdictions...welfare pays at least the equivalent of a $25,000 a year job. $10,000 + $25,000=

ILLEGAL ALIEN'S REAL INCOME = $35,000.

---------------------------

TTT grad earns $20 bucks hour in some shitlaw factory. $20x1500=$30,000. Shitlaw worker of course has to pay taxes, or he is hounded to the end of the earth by the IRS. $30,000-6,000=$24,000. Shitlaw TTT grad of course gets no health insurance and is "too rich" to be eligible for Medicaid. Food stamps are off the table if he/she was lucky enough to find a job. Sallie Mae of course comes along and gets her huge piece. $24,000-10,000=$14,000

TTT GRAD'S REAL INCOME = $14,000.

I would pick Eva Mendes over Salma Hayek andy day of the week and twice on Sundays.

As for the comment at 5:59, there is both a reading comprehension mistake *and* a mathematical mistake.

The reading mistake is as follows: the headline of this post is two separate facts. Fact one is that 25% of law grads work as office temps. Fact two is most make far less than $70k. You somehow came up with a combination and said that 25% make less than 70k.

The math mistake is that you then jump off of your reading mistake to argue that because 25% make less than 70k, then 75% make more. Which, of course, is wrong. You could easily have a breakdown such as 25%less, 50% at 70k, and then 25% more. And since biglaw pays 160k, you skew that further up.

I could've let one mistake go. But the double mistake had to dealt with. Somehow I have morphed into a grammar/math/logic nazi. I take no pleasure in it.

There are many quotes that keeps surgeon inspired about his job, they also help him jump these large obstacles in life, here are a few:-

"At 10, I was intrigued by surgery, I wanted to be surgeon for a long time. I love doctor shows and surgery shows. Blood is not an issue for me. I even took pictures once of me getting my blood taken. "

"Dr.Babanga, my local doctor, recommended that I should try superflex before and after breakfast"

"Humanity abhors, above all things, a vacuum in itself, and your class will be cut off from humanity as surgeon cuts the cancer and alien growth from the body. "

Fantastic. surgeon is inspired

DOC WORK FOR RAZA!

Just Another Coder said...

I've been doing doc review for about four years now and for the last two years I've pulled in 45-50 K a year. This would be fine if a law degree didn't cost six figures. Seriously, someone needs to do a story on the absurdity of any bank or government lending or backing six figures in student loan debt to finance an education that will lead to a 45,000 dollar a year job. No lender in the WORLD would agree to that if the state hadn't basically stripped all consumer protections from student loan borrowers.
