Markup Scam

Hi Tom:

Did you see the article that Professor Lester Brickman wrote in Forbes Magazine that highlighted the enormous markup that plaintiff lawyers are using of about $35 to $40 per hour paid to the contract lawyers which is then billed out at $300 and up per hour as a scam in class action lawsuits.

Check it out at:

You guys need a union, stat. Perhaps some of my teacher friends can help you network and draft some regs?

This is why opening the floodgates to outsourcing and hiring slimy bottom feeders like Nora Plesent who "strategizes with law firms and corporations to find ways to significantly reduce costs" is catching on. They will still get their buddies on the court to rubber stamp their $300 an hour fees, but will only have to pay out $20 an hour for the labor.

Good news.

"Facing an expected membership decline of up to 4,000 lawyers this year, the ABA has hired Leo Burnett Co. to help market itself.

ABA President-elect Carolyn Lamm says the ABA needs to attract more members who are solo practitioners, young lawyers and small-firm lawyers. She told the NLJ that ABA membership isn’t growing at the same rate as the profession, and the association doesn’t even represent half of all U.S. lawyers."

Fuck the ABA!

No jobs for YOU this week.

The rich irony being that 80-90% of Brickman's student are going into shit law or becoming contract attorneys, since Cardozo career dis-services could not give a shit less about placing anyone outside of the top 10% of the graduates.

Andrew Berry, the 69-year-old chairman of McCarter & English, died Friday while at his vacation home in Maine.

Berry helped expand McCarter & English into a “regional powerhouse” and “played a significant, if often anonymous, role in the rebirth of Newark,” the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports

I am just wondering what Lifer thinks of all this. She's had a lot of experience -

I think Lifer is dead. She lost her job and maybe the mice ate her.

I personally don't care if the firms mark it up. As long I get my share, I don't care what they charge their clients.

I mean are we becoming communists? As attorneys we should be supportive of the rates the firms charge. More money means more work for us.

This Carbozo prof is an idiot communist. Are they try to kill what's left of the litigation market in NYC?

What an ill timed and moronic article.

This guy has a point in that frims mark up rates, BUT its not JUST plaintiff's firms that do this. Furthermore, it is a legal practice. If anyone has reason to complain it would be teh contract attorneys arguing for a larger slice of that rate.
Clearly this guy has an agenda, he is most likely one of these right wing douche bags that got us into this rotten economy and an advocate for "tort reform" to prevent people from standing up for their rights.
He does not even pretend to write a non-biased article. What a pile of garbage. Pitchfork time!

As a *former* person involved in staffing... let me she a little light... the current mark up for most large staffing agencies is 1.38-1.42 (so for a pay rate of 30 the law firm is billed 41.40-42.60) and many firms who could *previously* bill the exorbinent mark ups are being forced to pass the Staffing agencies bill straigth through absent any additional mark up.
