Big Mamma deserves a pay cut.

See? temps can blame themselves for allowing such low rates and terrible conditions.

Did they ever quit or not take a shit job like this? no.

Then the Nigerian LLM's who undercut them they say are their "friends."

Temps, their own worst enemy.

1:14: Having trouble making you student loan payments? Having trouble paying the rent or mortgage? Having trouble keeping food on the table? Obviously you are not. However, the big steaming pile of dog shit in the middle of the room that nobody wants to talk about is that many temp attorneys can't pay the rent, can't make their loan payments, and they are going to take what work they can get. This is no joke. Perhaps you are financially secure and able to sit back on high principals. The rest of us are not and cannot. And we are not members of a union that can go on strike over wages and working conditions. This is what a sweatshop industry is all about. Blaming ourselves for our wages & conditions? It would make more sense to blame ourselves for being stupid enough to be sucked into the TTT/student loan scam. But I digress. It is what it is and as long as our courts allow Biglaw to send work to India, etc., it is as it will be.

The Yuppie Attorney said...

When I was in I.T. my mentor of sort said look around you. The point he was trying to make was that no one around me was over 30 years old.
You go to Microsoft, Apple, or Fischer Scientific; you will see none of the their people over 30 y.o..
This jumping from firm to firm gets rougher. After 30, age does play a factor. I know you say "there are laws," but there is little enforcement. Sometimes a person in their 40s could slip in. But, generally you are put out to pasture when you hit mid thirties in the contract business. Get the money and jobs while you can!!!

I have the solution.

The temps who can't cut it in this country, can't pay their rent or mortgages, can't put food on the table, should move to the Third World and take up residence in Nigeria or Ghana or India or Bangladesh or some such country as that, and live in a simple hut, and practice "Third World law", defending the rights of poor people living in hovels and slums, and live on subsistence wages eating gruel, and maybe an occasional slab of roast yak or water buffalo to supplement their meagre diets. They should ride around on decrepit, falling-apart bicycles, wearing loose-fitting cotton clothes because of the oppressive heat, and sandals. They should learn the local tongues, Igbo or Hausa or Hindi or Tamil, and boil their water before they drink or cook, to prevent cholera outbreaks and other such vile, parasitic Third World diseases from giving them chronic dysentery.

These incompetent American lawyers cannot make it in the First World, among the competitive, fast-paced, high-powered, high-achieving stellar Ivy League associates at the BigLaw firms, so they should take it down a notch, and go live in the Third World, and practice law as a poor, "barefoot attorney", representing clients on microfinance projects to help poor young mothers of 16 borrow 35 cents from some Non-Governmental Organisation, so they can start a business selling ground cornmeal to the villagers and maybe someday move into that grass hut they've had their eyes on.

8:46, this is 7:54. I is not a question of "cutting it" you arrogant competitive, fast-paced, high-powered, high-achieving stellar Ivy League associate at the BigLaw firm. Was daddy an attorney in Biglaw?

Anonymous said...

Please, I went to an Ivy League school and these nerds that make it to Big Law [barring the ones with family connections] are extremely nerdy, socially awkward, myopic, tense, uptight - many are on medications. Usually it's some extreme insecurity that is driving them into such a ruthless business.

A few years later as associates, they learn to chill out and actually develop some human qualities - and also get plastic surgery to correct their ugliness with their new found wealth.

Ok, some temp attorneys are weird and wacky and I don't know how they went to law school at all. But many are actually pretty nice, colorful, intelligent, funny and human - maybe that's why they are not in Big Law.

Anonymous said...

I worked with an old lady once at S&C. And actually she was much nicer than all the younger pigs and piglets put together. She was smart, humane and intelligent. Old people have a lot to offer in terms of wisdom and experience and I would rather work with them than young horny staff attorneys like Gaylard and Tiny or ghetto rats like Big Mamma and Valvina or even the uppity college grad who strut around like they are partners - [more like glorified secretaries].

The industry has new, lower rates thanks to the ABA's backing of the outsourcing of attorney jobs to India.

We're competing with India now. It's unspeakable! Abolish the ABA!

And they wonder why their membership is plummeting.

"Even in the decades after it lost its empire, Britain strode the world like a pocket superpower. Its economic strength and cultural heft, its nuclear-backed military might, its extraordinary relationship with America—all these things helped this small island nation to punch well above its weight class. Now all that is changing as the bills come due on Britain's role in last year's financial meltdown, the rescue of the banks, and the ensuing recession. Suddenly, the sun that once never set on the British Empire is casting long shadows over what's left of Britain's imperial ambitions, and the country is having to rethink its role in the world—perhaps as Little Britain, certainly as a lesser Britain."

The same thing is happening in America. This is what happens when you open your borders and allow bottom feeding parasites loot your country. Free trade my ass.

Poor Lifer. I would prefer to work with her than troublesome "hot" [in their mind] young bitches strutting their cheap wares - I get enough action on the side so I don't need fuck buddies at work. Just peace and quiet and no distraction - old birds like Lifer are cool in that way. They shut up and work but alas they are being driven away...

This week in law firm layoffs:

Fulbright & Jaworski: 54 staff (here & here)

Bradley Arant: 35 staff

Mallesons: 100 lawyers & staff

Husch Blackwell: undisclosed lawyers

Goodsill Anderson: 9 staff

Total: 98 staff

If Lifer was real I would have liked to befriend her. She's cute.

Anonymous said...

She is real. She is on a foreign language review at Skadden. I sit next to her.

This blog is hysterical. I would not have gotten through the depressing months of my unemployment without the zaniness of this site - the strange characters, the kooky posts, the S&C drama, the honesty and information. It definitely uplifted my spirits even on the bleakest days !

The fake posters here are so un-funny and repetitive. Lifer, Beer Guzzler, etc. Ugh.

Whatever happened to Recruiter and Better Coder?

And whatever happened to Skeeter and Snuffy, over at Cravvie?

Anonymous said...

I am glad that "Recruiter" and "Better Coder" are gone, at least for now. They just clogged up the comments section with meaningless posts.

$20/hour is awful for NYC, especially if one has a lot of student debt. But its better than nothing.

Anonymous said...

Beer guzzler is the best.

Recruiter said...

I am still here. Me and the girls have been away at a Practicing Law Institute week long seminar on outsourcing that took place in Bermuda.

I am currently staffing an exciting document review for $25 an hour for those speakers of the central khattak dialect of Pakhto. If anyone is interested, please email me. Candidates with the requisite experience need only apply.

Anonymous said...

I like Guido.

Anonymous said...

Lifer is cool too. And Beer Guzzler.

Anonymous said...

Many Pakhto-speaking guys are gay -- true dat - mostly due to heavy male-female segregation in the area.Occasionally Pakhto or Pushto speakers have relations with a goat. Baaaaa, baaaaa

Lifer reminds me of someone I used to work with. Anyone remember crazy Elaine with her wild hats? What about that scammer Clarence? Is he still out there?

Anonymous said...

I thought Lifer was at Dechert. And now she is at Skadden. Boy this old bird certainly gets around.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone ever work with Fran? She would always wear the same green rag, and would always go off on people.

Anonymous said...

I think they wanted people who just took the NY/NJ bar because the doc review is about adverse possession and the rule against perpetuities, so they wanted people who could remember their mnemonic devices.

Lifer said...

I used to work at those. I am not going to let you know where I am now.I should say, however, that everywhere is pathetic as far as the rate.

Anonymous said...

Lifer, you should start your own blog.

Lifer said...

Well, I could write a book on the four something months I was on Vioxx, basically how the front desk guy sexually harrassed guys, gossiped about everyone, etc. Or the nest of TP in the stalls. The fingernails and food in the keyboards. The stained carpets. The seat cusions so old and flat the you were sitting on plastic and other lifers got hemmroids. The $15 for food, the hour waits for cars, the hot seat, carpal tunnel...

I'll leave that for another day as it's just the start.

After 65, most gigs are more ruined by other temps, although Dechert is as bad as PW basement and SC. worst onsite person is that Maria woman at Cleary.

Anonymous said...

Is Starbucks hiring? I make a mean cup of java...

Anonymous said...

Lifer, have you been sexually harassed? I mean recently. I am sure you hope for it. Your Vioxx story sounds pretty similar to my stay at S&C except there was a Dominican woman at the front desk with mammaries that were pushed up to her eyeballs and she hit on every white boy with a pulse - even the ugly pimply dudes - and gossiped to Update about all the temps. She was a real ho. The toilet, the stained seats, dirt, filth and asshole car-boys -- all the same...same shit, different firm...
