"Satan" John's Law School

Bankrupt, unemployed, and homeless. That was the outcome for me after graduating from St. John’s. I graduated ranked in the middle of my class, just above the median. I passed the July bar exam and was subsequently admitted to the New York State bar. But for years I applied for work at every level - from custodian to store cashier to legal secretary to attorney - and found that my St. John’s degree made me as employable as an ex-felon. I was overqualified for most non-legal work, but considered under-qualified to be hired as an attorney. As a new graduate, I had neither the financial resources nor the expertise to establish my own practice; I could not afford the cost of blueback paper much less the cost of malpractice insurance. Unemployed for years and having incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, I found myself basically bankrupt and homeless. Under these circumstances, the only unexplored avenue was applying for public assistance i.e. food stamps, “workfare” cash payments, housing vouchers, Medicaid. Before law school, I had a clerical job that was uninspiring but paid $60,000 in annual salary with excellent benefits. Obviously, I strongly recommend against going to St. John’s under any circumstance. For the overwhelming majority of students, St. John’s will take your money and throw you underneath the bus. To those who do not believe they can fall as far as I did, read on:

They should mail a printed version of this out with all of their glossy brochures and provide a link to this message board posting on the STTT John's School of Law web site.

The director of Career Services at Saint John's is non other than a former sleazy temp recruiter from Kelly.

"Another example of law's gutter status. They hire sleazbags from Kelly to operate their career placement department. Maybe she can help this guy get a doc review gig, he needs it.

I remember our career services witch. She was a nasty old chain smoking hag that wouldn't look at you if you weren't in the top 10% of the class. In fact at one of our first meetings as 1Ls this woman had the nerve to say (after our lives had been signed away with loans), "If you're not in the top 10% of the class we can't help you". Great, so the bottom 75% of the class who gets no help, pays your salary and for the scholarships of the top 1/4. What a hideous bunch of assholes. Thanks Lucy, you horrendous skank."

What do you expect the nasty old chainsmoking hag to do for you, really?

Is Anita Back?
I received the following e-mail yesterday from someone on my project. It concerns an e-mail that he/she received from one of the agencies regarding the project. Tom the Temp's comments in bold.

Tom the Temp,

Anita may have been gone physically today but her handiwork is alive and well as evident by the below email from her agents at one of the agencies (looks like the old Anita is back).

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well. {doing okay aside from my mild case of carpal tunnel}. Thank you again for weathering what I know has been a rocky month {more than a month, it is March already} or so on this project. I understand from the folks who are running the site that things are about to pick up however, and I thought this would be a good time to remind you of some general policies {rules} that must be followed:

First, make absolutely sure that you sign in and sign out accurately, and that what you record on the sign in/sign out sheet is consistent with what you record on your timesheets. {don't overbill - I hope the "vanishing princess" isn't on this project}.

Second, cell phone use, internet use, {we don't have internet, remember?} and other personal/recreational activities {we weren't playing squash or anything} like puzzles – other than when you are on your breaks – must be kept to a very bare minimum. {not just a bare minimum, but a "very" bare mininum} We have received complaints about excessive {that is a strong word} amounts of all three activities. This policy may have been relaxed during the slow weeks, but it is VERY important again starting now and going forward. {sign that "lockdown" is coming}.

Finally, just a reminder that the attorneys managing the site do have the ability to track exactly what work you have done on a daily basis and when. {big brother is watching} If they feel they have any reason to question your attention to the work, they will verify your productivity, and low numbers combined with things like cell phone use, etc. will be a basis for being removed from the project. {this is fair - hopefully, however, no more public executions for people caught with a game of minesweeper}.

Thank you all for taking note of these policies. We reiterate them not to harass you, but to make absolutely clear what is expected, so that no one is asked to leave the project for failure to follow them out of lack of notice. {thanks for the heads up. I just wish that all of the agencies would have informed their candidates. I didn't receive any notice}.

Please be in touch and let us know how else we can support you throughout the project.
Again, with many thanks.

Is this just a friendly reminder, or a sign that we are on the verge of another "lockdown." Only time will tell.

I like the golden oldies--I won't lie. I'll have to figure out how to access them. However, maybe the blog has changed since getting AP attention. Maybe it is less whining about the personal situation of a temp, and more whining at the stars, "society," law schools that accept a great number of people who WANT such an education.

Anonymous said...

4:20, I think your sociological analysis is a little shallow. Yes, expensive toilet law schools are part of the problem, and no, Anita is not some grand demonic universal force that seeks to destroy the lives of young JD's.

Frankly, I am kind of glad this blog grew up a little. Early on, I was kind of unnerved by the witch hunt mentality that was going on here which sought to lay all the blame on individual women, specifically Anita and Lisa Hart.

Anonymous said...

people like anita and lisa heart needed to be exposed. no longer should american work in that kind of environment. it is time to let the petty, minicle, mean people know that. this is a civilized nation.

Anonymous said...

5:00

Is it the "mean" people. Is that the problem. Are you wearing a shirt that says "mean people suck." If people could just be nice to each other...

Anyway, it's the "mean" people as much as St. John's is "Satan." This will only begin and end with individuals. Individuals will decide whether or not to stay in the field or not. Certainly, a temporary attorney at $30-$35 an hour can pay off debt, and if he decides that after that law school is not for him, then he can get another kind of job with his skills.

Or he can start his own practice like me. Not big shot stuff like in "The Firm," but who said everyone was going to get paid like that?

Anonymous said...

are you anita?

Anonymous said...

No, but I'll tell you who Anita is, I heard her(or him) whining:

A-Nita big flashy car.
A-Nita lot of money.
A-Nita serious respect.

And finally...
A-Nita blame my lack of a job on my law program--it sucks, and I thought it would be good enough, even though I couldn't get into what I now consider a "real" school.

7:37 PM, As I (and many others) have stated before, people did not have enough information to make an informed decision on whether law school was a financially good decision.

When TTTs publish misleading stats on employment rates and starting salaries, it is no wonder that people were confused.

Anonymous said...

Law is only for elites, the poor bottom of the class TTT schlubs only exist to subsidize the law schools give scholarships to the top 1/4 of the class to prevent them from transferrring.

It's a scam/incredibly poor financial decision for 75% of the students.

Anonymous said...

Well then why didnt you fucks realize this before you went to law school?

I remember reading a very strong article discouraging people from going to law school in 1999....in U.S. News & World Report's Annual Guide to Graduate Schools. Seriously, asswipes, I know you were all naive 21- and 22-year-olds, but you were still old enough to do a modicum of research. And there were plenty of sources of information before law school, such as guidebooks, news articles, people who WENT. Why the fuck would you pay any attention to law school promotional booklets...they're ADVERTISING. In other words, LIES.

Trusting little fucks.

Anonymous said...

I don't remember anything from that time. Cite, please?

stateofbeasley said...

9:45 PM,

In 1999, many of us were still in high school.

I read the guidebooks. The news articles continually trumpeted gigantic starting salaries. Hell, the Philly Inquirer was still talking about rising biglaw salaries a couple months ago.

I also talked to people who went to law school -- biglaw partners, federal prosecutors, and small town practicioners. What didn't occur to me at the time was that I was only talking to people who were successful and had gone to law school 15-30 years ago when the industry was much different. They were succesful and established. I didn't seek out people who failed or did badly. Where does a 21 year old college senior find failed lawyers anyways? Sites like jdunderground didn't exist back in 2002.

As for the law school booklets, law schools are non-profit institutions that claim to uphold high professional and moral standards. The perception of institutions of higher learning is much different than the perception of say, Microsoft or ExxonMobil. Rightly or wrongly, a lot of people think that the EDUs are trustworthy because they purport to be about education, not profit.

So people can troll all they want and point fingers, and say "you should have known," but the fact remains that if information is not easily available, people will make bad choices.

Anonymous said...

I researched the "ABA's Official Guide to Law Schools." Only now do I realize that the numbers in that official looking publication were totally cooked up by the likes of Joan King and Valvoline Dean.

Why are you here? Of course you are right--we were trusting, ignorant little fucks. We're just trying to get by, and we don't want to hear it from you. We also don't want to hear it from people who tell us to start our own practice, or leave the profession, whatever. Why do you have all the time to troll our website?

Anonymous said...

Who has a bad perception of ExxonMobil? Probably you ignorant, self-pitying fools who listen to what everyone says about Big Oil and join the herd. ExxonMobil is one of the greatest instruments of peace in the world today. We want oil, and these guys go into the world's roughest places (Nigeria, Azerbaijan, etc.) and bring this stuff back for us. They get it from deep under the seabed. They ship it around the world to our tanks. And they do it peacefully. They don't kill anyone. And we get so mad when they make a nice profit? Come on. Compare that to the fantastic job the US government did of getting us the oil in Iraq. They totally botched it and killed thousands. And Exxon provides great benefits and retirements for tens of thousands. Maybe you guys would like an employer who did that?

Whoever posted at 2AM has serious issues (and obviously nothing better to do than troll).

He and the rest of Update should realize and appreciate that without temp attorneys billing all these hours, there would be no Update.

How about the female Stepford Update staffers stopping giving preferential treatment and the cushiest well paying assignments to certain male temps who flatter them? How about they stop making wankers like "Supertemp" project leaders? How about Update contributing a few bucks to a health plan and a 401 (k) plan? A little quid pro quo might rehabilitate your image."

With all that free, stolen oil flowing into our nation you would think gas would be cheaper? Think again.

I don't doubt that many of us went to school under the assumption that we would be making biglaw money when we got out of school, and those of us that thought that way can be considered idealists (if put in a positive light) and naive (if put in a negative light).

The simple fact of the matter is that unless you graduated very high in your class (and I did not) this was a false expectation. Blame the false reporting all you want, but the simple fact remains that many people posting on this site are looking for permanent employment in a horrible economy. Do I think that the schools are somewhat to blame for mis-reporting numbers, sure I do. Hell, I went to BLS home of the infamous Joan King (who I have disliked since day 1 of law school). That said, I think everyone needs to drop their sense of entitlement. If you wanted the starting salaries you all heard about you should have graduated near the top of your respective classes. As far as permanent employment goes, well I do blame part of that on schools mis-reporting figures, I also blame this economy.

Anonymous said...

LOL, 9:19, I reread what I wrote. It sounds like I vomitted a thesaurus. I stand by my point; just wish I could've expressed it better!

Anonymous said...

1:58 - Blame the horrible economy all you want, but even in the "golden" years of 2004-2006 the legal market was glutted beyond belief. I was working in some 45K a year PI boiler room and I remember the fax machine nearly exploded when we posted an entry-level attorney job listing. And I was shocked at the time at the quality of some of these resumes.

I went to Seton Hall which is like St. Johns, except with poorer employment prospects and in New Jersey. If you did not graduate in the top 15% (i.e. at least cum laude) or else have some other hook, you became a 35,000 a year clerk for some lower court judge, then, God knows what. SJU, Pace, Brooklyn, Cardozo, NYLS and (to a lesser extent) Fordham are all the same in this regard. They pump out law school grads at an insane clip the vast majority of which have zero hope of getting the dream BIGLAW job.

4:40 here. I never realized this to be the case as I was one of those guys who got the "BIGLAW" job out of SHU (back in early 00's). Now nearing the end of my BIGLAW tenure, I see that for the vast majority of my classmates, BIGLAW was not an option. And for those who call them suckers, there were guys who graduated in the top 20%-30% and didn't get the plum job, so went and clerked for a year, maybe 2 at like 35,000 a year, then got a job at some low end shop for $50,000-60,000 and only now are getting into making decent money, like 100,000 and up. Law schools, just like so-called predatory lenders and other types of lenders should be statutorily required to disclose the risks of incurring law school debt.

Oh, another wonderful "Catholic" law school. I went to one. Thought they would really care about social justice and fairness for all. Stupid me. They cared about MONEY. More to the point, those they PERCEIVED to come from families from money. There were only about 4 minorities in the whole damn school and they all transferred out after first year. One of the deans got sued (and later fired) for discriminating against students with disabilities.

Law schools, Jesuit law schools, all law schools except the first tiers are a joke. And don't think those who are in the top of the class have it made, either. It's all who you know and who you blow.

Anita is a temp attorney supervisor who has a job with responsibilities. I temped for her early in my career, and I found her pleasant. She became something of an expert in large-scale document review temporary jobs, and many have learned from her how to effectively run a project. As with temporary work, she dealt with a lot of people playing minesweeper, obviously talking and hanging out with friends they made in the job to the detriment of getting the job complete on her desired timeline.

Of course, because she is female, some of the guys who worked for her thought she is some kind of "ballbuster" or lesbian or something. I have the utmost respect for her, and she is one of the good bosses in this niche, because I make very, very good money going from one temporary job to another. I guess the guys that complain envisioned an office where they can put brandy in the desk and have a hot secretary they can oogle all day long. The real world is disappointing to them.

People play minesweeper and talk to their friends because they are stuck in a bullshit, dead-end job where the main task at hand is to churn worthless dreck paper around an office all day. It's the most pointless, worthless way to earn a living that I can think of. The only purpose of these scam factories are to bill a lot of hours so some named law firm partner somewhere can make an insane amount of money and put down a deposit on a second home in the hamptons. Anyone who gets on their high horse and actually has the audacity to claim that any of this bullshit matters and actually feels the need to be a "ball buster" is a traitor.

This is all a scam and a joke. Most of these toilet schools need to be shuttered, their assets sold off and liquidated, and the people working in litigation sweatshops need discharges so they can move on and actually do something semi-productive with the remaining years of their lives.

"and the people working in litigation sweatshops need discharges so they can move on and actually do something semi-productive with the remaining years of their lives."

Need discharges? So crazy. People who signed up for the military and do not want to go to war need discharges. As far as I can tell, a temporary attorney can leave any time he wants, right? After that, I would also reccommend getting on with the rest of their life aslo.

Yes, shut down the law schools. The first step is to get the poor lemmings to stop going to law school. If we can stop these impressionable people in their 20s from plunking down over $150k for the privilege of attending a TTT dump like STTT. Johns, Touro or Brooklyn Law School, it well help end the terror grip of Sallie Mae and the temp agencies.

Peoples lives are being ruined, by virtue of their decision to attend a professional school that will not offer them any decent career options, while crippling them with debt.

Man I feel sorry for these 20-somethings. They were all small children in the Reagan 80s and so were fed a lot of bullshit that previous generations were taught to be more wary of. They have these false preconceived notions and expect everything to be handed to them without any effort on their parts. They don't realize that the job market in law has been poor and steadily getting worse for the past 20 or 25 years, but since they were never encouraged to study history of any type they don't realize this. Now these spoiled, self-entitled little wonks are waking up to the fact that they've been cheated (and they have to some degree, although not as much as the poorer classes), but they lack the critical faculties and education to understand it fully. So what do they do instead? They whine and whine and whine.

You, my friend, are the real tom, the uncle tom.

Anonymous said...

I can assure you the mole isn't from the asbestos. How are your lungs doing? About the mole, about how many sunlight hours per week have you averaged since infancy?

I recommend getting a more fulfilling job--In my opinion, the present one is causing you undue stress.

I happen to like $30/hour and the ability to take vacations largely whenever I want. I get plenty of work, and if you don't, I can help you find (steady--one project to another) temp work in both NY and ATL. Something tells me that if you had a job that required real responsibility you would complain about it also.

I'm making out like a bandit (over $100,000/year) without doing any stressful work. I'm not so sure what you wanted--an office? Who cares about that? I'm willing to work and get paid.

100,000, at $30 an hour? 3300 hours a year? Don't give me that OT shit, there is hardly any OT in this economy. You must be engaged in a lot of over billing. I guess it's easy to climb up on your high horse, when you are playing along with the scam.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more. I ain't gonna scrub her floor.

Ditto. Over $100K. A nearly stress-free job. Flexibility.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ALL, STUPID? Take the fucking money and run.

Welcome to the real world, assholes.

I like weeks off (I take two to three weeks off per year--of my choice, pretty much--not to the day, but to the month or so), and I am not afraid to work 10 hour days and occasional saturdays. You do the math. I like the projects where overtime isn't expected, but I love overtime! The whole time I'm working overtime(and I mean working, not feeling sorry for myself or goofing around lamenting my broken dreams), I'm thinking $45/hour with a grin on my face.

I just still don't know what the problem is though. Although I appreciate some of Tom the T's research--the payscale is very helpful, for example

Has anyone noticed that the OP, the SJU Alum who posted that message, went back to LSD and deleted the post? Did he/she have remorse or felt their story was not true in some way?

Shame.

He's a newbie just out of school. As you can see from the thread, the administration trolls are all over LSD (that is where the OL's frequent) and can get pretty nasty and vidictive when you criticize their school. They are master manipulators. He probably took the thread down in shame. I wouldn't be suprised if it was Jeanne Ardan, the Joan King of STTT John's.

I think the LSD admins probably deleted the post. Notice that the thread is locked.

Someone from SJU administration probably asked LSD to delete the post and lock the thread. It doesn't matter. Anyone visiting LSD these days will quickly find out that overpriced private law schools aren't worth it.

Hopefully the credit crunch and the bad press these private schools are getting will put them out of business. Permanently.

A shame, I hope someone saved it, it was an excellent piece. He was probably threatened with a law suit by STTT Johns.

(1) how is this the school's fault?? an unfortunate situation for sure, but i don't know why you blame the school for your inability to find a job. there are plenty of st. john's grads out there with jobs as lawyers. (2) there are clearly too many lawyers and too many law schools. st. john's is by no means a bad law school. my real beef is with attorneys who went to places that should never be accredited...those attorneys were so desperate to go to ANY law school that they didn't care that a degree from the school is worthless until after graduation.

omg, do you really think people from law shools look at this site..sill , tricks are for kids. STOP BLAMING PEOPLE...change your life and move on.

We're just trying help people understand that law school is a bad deal for most kids applying. In fact at least 70% of the people applying to law school now are making a potentially life crushing mistake that they will sincerely regret.

10:07 which law school do you work for, STTT John's?

The Eggman, a graduate of St. John's Law School, finally had the great fall into a garbage can that was a long time coming.
