Independence Day

What better way to celebrate America's independence from the British than by spending it in a windowless cubicle:

"Kasowitz is great!‏ If you enjoy working thru the 4th of July weekend. Woo-hoo!"

Speaking of the British,

"I hope this is a fucking joke. Craigslist NYC post below - It's an opportunity to work in one of the most expensive cities in the world earning less than 12 British pounds per hour.

First of all, I'm not sure why you'd get paid in Euros while working in the UK, which still uses the British Pound Sterling. Assuming that this is accurate, when the higher standard of living is factored in, your pay rate is ridiculously low. A Big Mac in the UK is roughly 2 British pounds, while in US dollars, it's roughly 3 bucks. Figure that your pay rate, based on your purchasing power, is no more than $18/hour.

Boo this man!

US barred temp attorneys needed for a 2-3 month project in LONDON- MUST be able to provide own accommodations!'

Compensation: 15.00 EUROS/hr"

Can you pay your student loans in pounds? My monthly student loan payment is probably greater than the annual GDP of several small African nations.

ANITA

All has been quiet on the Anita project.

April has arrived. Three solid months of repetitive document review is beginning to take its toll. The psychological stress is slowly building. Document Review is psychologically stressful; anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying. I dare anyone, while reviewing thousand of pages of spreadsheets, to stare into a dim, luminescent screen for 1o hrs a day. It is made even more stressful at places, such as Paul Weiss, where you are forced to work 12 hour shifts in roach-infested basements. After weeks of being exposed to such soulless, mindless drudgery, people simply start to go batty. Obviously, some people are better able to handle this "stress" than others. One person who apparently buckled under the pressure was Claudia. After being on Anita's project since its inception, Claudia was evidently fired last week.

Claudia started exhibiting signs of a breakdown several weeks ago. People sitting around her noticed that she would spontaneously laugh out loud and repeatedly (under her breath) mutter, "shit, this shit, I can't take this shit."

Last week, Claudia's modest display of looniness exploded into a full-fledged case of paranoid schizophrenia. Apparently, the voices within Claudia's head caught wind of a large governmental conspiracy in which Anita, in conjunction with the document production company, the agencies, the law firms, and the United States Government were "out to get her." Claudia especially had it in for super-temp, whom she saw as being the mastermind behind the grand conspiracy. With arms flailing, Claudia would constantly chase after, hunt down, and curse out Anita, super-temp, and the first-year associates. I have to admit it was sort of amusing to see.

Now THAT was fucking hilarious.

shit where was that from 5:04? funny.

that was one of tom's old posting on this very site if you can beleive that - when he used to write about useful and enetertaining things.

now the site is a big yawn.

15 Euros an hour really is peanuts for this job. Rent in London is usually quoted by the week. The average rent in central London would be about 400 GBP per week (505 Euros per week). But 15 Euros times 40 hours is only 600 Euros! The pay needs to be at least twice what they are offering.

This blog is officially dead.

Long live the next temporary attorney blog!

what do you folks think happend?

Is tom no longer temping? Was he forced by "the authorities" not to write interesting things? Has he suffered server brain damage in a bicycle crash?

1015 - please stop answering your own questions. Everyone knows you are a temp agency/law school/law firm admin that hates Tom. We get, and find YOU to be an incredibly boring retard.

Sorry, this blog is just the beginning, get used to it.

the craigslist posting is a fake. it's a temp agency trying to acquire information about candidates. inside sources tell me they've gotten sneakier and talk a lot more than you would think.

Anonymous said...

Who cares? If they post fake ads on Craig's List flag them for removal.

Anonymous said...

I am seeing a lot more fake ads from "anonymous" sources. Personally, I would never respond to an anonymous job posting. Some of these recruiters are acting like scum.

We have an attorney code of ethics. Why isn't there a recruiter code of ethics?

Anonymous said...

the decent agencies are putting their name on the postings beware of blind adds seeking contract attorneys. by not responding to to blind ads, agencies will forced to reveal themselves.

I hear Tom is attending Anita's bbq party this weekend. anyone else invited?

Anonymous said...

Good idea 12:14. I'm going to start doing that! 12:58's idea is good too, but i think the first one will be more effective. How will agencies react when their blind ads are down a few hours later? I just don't know if CL really takes them down, or just pays lip service to that possibility?

Always flag them on Craig's List if they are not legit. They will be pulled if seemingly nefarious.

Also remember Roach Boy, all work and no play makes jack a dull roach boy.

Listen, 4:19, I share Roach Boy's concern. A number of us have watched with disappointment as the quality of this blog has declined. Survey the posts of the past few months: they are extremely dull and repetitive. Tom has simply run out of ideas. So when Tom's old nemesis Anita penned a mediocre treatise on doc review recently, we rejoiced. At last, we thought, there'll be fireworks! Wit and satire shall return to this beleaguerd blog. Alas, not a peep on Anita was to be heard. Anita is yesterday's news, some declared, so let's have five more posts denouncing Joan King or Scott Krowitz.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Anonymous said...

But 4:55 you *are* roach boy. We can see through your transparent scheme.

You have repeatedly (ad naseum) rehashed the same old, boring posts. Yes, the were exciting when they were written, but they are no longer. No one cares about your pathetic attempts to destroy this blog. In fact, the idea that you spend so much here time indicates that this blog is working!

Thanks for keeping the blog going roach boy. It's the 4th of July today and most people are doing something besides obsessively ranting about some person named "Anita". You are truly deranged and pitiful. I would recommend you go out and get a life, for clearly you are such a loser that posting about Anita consumes your entire life.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull roach boy.

Two things:

1) the exchange rate is 1.5708 dollars to the euro on 7-5-2008. 23 dollars an hour.

2) As a member of the New York Bar isn't there reciprocity to the irish bar, thus able to practice in the EU? Or what do you have to do to become a solicitor in UK?

Anonymous said...

uh 5:23, what the fuck were you doing posting on this blog at 5:23 on the 4th of July? most people were doing something but you were obsessively attacking roach boy like a big pussy.

2:19-3:03 (Roach Boy?)

I don't know if Tom is temping or not. Judging from the article *Anita* article, the working conditions have vastly improved: no longer cramped, plentiful refrigerator, etc. Since Tom is "living it up," he has moved on to issues of sociological importance. Your golden oldies helps keep this in perspective, and I thoroughly enjoy the comparison. You are right about the Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz factor, but as Tom further globalizes, he will move on to global warming, etc., and this "too many law schools, they are thriving off of your broken dreams" stuff will be the new "golden oldie."

Anonymous said...

does anyone know anita's real identity?

Anonymous said...

5:23, I don't think roach boy is trying to destroy this blog; just trying to liven it up, I guess.

P.S. I'm not roach boy. I swear.

Paaaaleeeeeeeeeze! Working conditions are deteriorating, if anything.

I wonder how the conditions are in India, where the bulk of our work is going.

THis makes no sense, and probably is illegal. Where is London? There is no London in any country using the Euro. If the London presumably is THE London in the UK, then any compensation in anything other than the BPS (Bristish Pound Sterling) probably is illegal. And what about income tax implications? This really is stupid and should be reported to the appropriate criminal authority.

No, sadly it's quite legal and de rigeur from us commoner "contract attorney" types. Far from international men/women of mystery we are simply hired clickers, an itinerant bunch to say the least.
