Dizzy Spells And Spinning Rooms

One of the greatest fears of being an independent contractor is the fear of coming down with an unforeseen injury or illness. With my shit agency "health" plan offering a paltry $7,500 annual maximum benefit allotment ($1,500 annual limit for the surgeon/$250 limit for the anesthesiologist/and $250 daily limit for hospital room and board) getting sick is impossible. I, like many of those around me, undoubtedly cloak themselves under a "it won't happen to me" umbrella of denial. As luck would have it, last weekend the wind came up and tore off my umbrella.

There is no reason to use the horrible health plans offered by the contracting companies, unless you are unable to get coverage due to poor health/prior conditions.

ehealthinsurance.com has a good selection of plans that will keep most people well covered.

Been temping since '05. Haven't had health insurance since then. I gained about 25 pounds, been plastered more times than I can remember, hooked up with plenty of slumpbusters and been in plenty of fights but fortunately I haven't had to go to a doctor.

In NY, a decent individual PPO plan will run you close to $1000-1200 a month. That is hard to swing with student loans in a high COL city. $300-400 will get you shit.

Anonymous said...

Agencies could care less about offering adequate, affordable health care. They are just looking for bodies with law licenses that they can shove into their coding factories. They will put 500 lb grandmothers with diabetes on projects because it makes THEM money. Never mind that our insurance premiums our obscenely out of reach.

Anonymous said...

I just looked at NY plans at ehealthinsurance and they are pretty expensive. The most expensive one is almost $900/month, though there do seem to be some plans in the $400 range.

Is it possible for people here to get out of New York? The high COL, high taxes, and high insurance costs seem to make it difficult to get by.

Anonymous said...

God forbid you come down with a serious illness on that $400 a month plan.

The rich live. The poor die.

She cut out the Update bitches and now Constantine contributes to temp health care. Kudos to Anita and Constantine!

Update sucks!

I heard that Nathan Wager, formerly of the Willkie Farr has passed away. I offer condolences to his family.

He managed many temps in some of the better large doc review gigs around. God bless.

Speaking of Lex-Pollution and diseases, it seems as if Lex-Pollution is an aggressive form of butt cancer that has metastasized to California.

"We are confident that, as we did in New York and Washington, D.C., we can apply our business model to Los Angeles and raise the bar for clients seeking contract staffing, both in terms of quality of service and competitive pricing," commented Lexolution principal Scott Krowitz."

Watch out, LA! Kroshitz will soon be coming to town with his "competitive" pricing.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Nathan Wager RIP. The guy had two kids. Things must have been really bad for him to have taken his own life. So sad.

Anonymous said...

Anyone left to manage contract "attorneys" for long enough would have to ge suicidal. Just look at most of these comments posted by these idiots. I hope his family sues.

I have a top-notch Oxford plan for $500 a month, and Hudson offers a very good United for about 4.

As legal temps pass mildly away
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some temp bloggers do say,
"He had some bad insurance,"
And Anita says "so!"

So let us melt,
And make no noise.
No tear floods or soul tempest.
Twere profanation of our joys
To complain about all the JDs.

That $400-500 Hudson plan may look good on paper, but believe me, it is absolute shit. You do NOT want to be diagnosed with a serious illness on that type of plan. You will be left to die with sub-par treatment.

I need ta go get some health insurance because I am still a Republican and don't agree with universal coverage even after being featured in Barbara Ehrenreich book about the so called "losers" in the American system.

Anonymous said...

Try Atlantis Health (NYC) - $345 a month and pretty good.

Anonymous said...

Universal coverage. It's coming.

Anonymous said...

Fuck you, Tom the Temp!!!

Anonymous said...

If you are a member of the NY State Bar Assoc'n, they now offer health plans. You might want to check it out.

Anonymous said...

You're right, the Hudson plan is solid but not great. Now I've scored Oxford I'm keeping it for life. My advice is if you temp long enough, you WILL eventually get good health insurance. Did I think when I went to law school I would have to struggle for insurance? No. But once I got past the initial shock of realizing that being a lawyer wasn't all it's cracked up to be, I went from gig to gig to get better insurance. Sad it has to be done, but my point is that it can be.

Anonymous said...

Interesting.

How do you get to keep it indefinitely? Doesn't Cobra expire after a certain period of time?

Also, can you put up a chart of what agencies offer decent health plans? It's really difficult to find that information out before you have to go through with the hassle of registering with an agency.

It was sad to hear Nathan Wager passed away. It was enjoyable working with him. One day it will be delightful to log on and hear Alex Gallard is dead. This hapless shit faced staff attorney from Sullivan is
the equilavent of the men's room at 30 Broad Street. He walks around in wrinkled shirts with unbuttoned cuffs and ill fitting pants - disheveled.
His mood, demeanor and professionalism is disgusting. Should he die young, he will be doing himself and everyone else a favor. I feel sorry for the poor woman that has to share his bed.

Anonymous said...

For health insurance, the best temp agency ive found is hudson, but u have to b on a long term project. Some firms hire temps now and offer full benefits. Covington Burling is the best of these that i know of. then google search state cobra plans. maybe 20states have them which offers the same health insurance u had on cobra into perpetuity. u have to pay for it, of course, like 500 a month or so, but it totally frees u up to take cash lucrative jobs that have poor benes. At the end of the day this is a stop gap measure tho. unless the bars stick up for keeping the jobs in the states, i dont c how doc reviewers can keep at it 4 much longer. and i doubt the bars would ever lower themselves to talk to us, let alone help us.

Again, more of the same whining. No one is making you be a temp, your are not entitled to a high paying job. Yeah, the oversaturation of the legal market sucks for everyone but a select few. That being said, it is your own fault if you don't either get a firm job or find a job in the business sector. Can't afford it you say, its called living on a tight budget for awhile and taking a lower salary, if you can't afford NY - MOVE. Everyone is product of their own efforts, but please stop whining when you make $80000 a year temping. Also, you can put your student loans in foreberance. All the whiners who think they are entitled to a high pay, great benefits and constance employment are a bunch of dopes...Look at the definition of TEMPORARY....

5:02, i worked with that inadequate, grasping, smug little twerp and I couldn't agree more. i was amazed when S&C didn't can his arse for that scandal surrounding him and that anorexic butterface girl... that project was filled with odious, intolerable cretins but he was easily in the top three...

Anonymous said...

5:02 and 11:37,

Much hatred in you, and I like it. That hate--that indignation--is what makes you strong. It gives you strength, focus. Let that hatred flow through your being. This Alex fellow, perhaps if he is married, and has children, could be made to suffer should his wife find out about past indiscretions. Whenever possible, the enlightened individual should seek to destroy those who offend us. For instance, those who speak in ebonics, or who are fat and ugly, or who are offensive for any number of reasons. Harbor your vicious hatred in your soul--invigorating your entire being with dark energy--until there is a monment to act, for the torment and destruction of that which perturbs you. Take glee in their sorrow, as their anguish sustains you.

Anonymous said...

that punk-ass bitch wouldn't dare meet you face to face. The bright side is that you will move on to another project, while he will still be stuck at S&C working 90-hour weeks as the errand boy of brand-new JDs.

I'm a freelancer who learned from doing one project that doing this work in these conditions was bollocks. Send me an e-mail (vitriolicviewers@gmail) & we can discuss but don't expect a freebie or contingency; if you're not legit, don't waste my time. Whiners certainly don't need to waste my time though the user name is the same title as a great new blog on what's wrong & right w/TV on DVD releases.

Hi 12:17, 11:37 and 10:57. This is 5:02. Thanks for you thoughtful comments regarding Alex Gallard.

I never knew the identity of the anorexic but-for-her-face. Actually, I am completely shocked he secured a mistress.

My belief was he was suffering from D.S.B. For those outside of the medical field, D.S.B. is an abbreviation for the tragic condition known as Deadly Sperm Buildup. His facial expressions and conduct were symptoms of that embarassing disorder.

Hearing this news about his infidelity causes me sympathy for him and his mail order bride. When I can confirm with certainty the accuracy of this rumor, and the identity of the butterface woman, I will be compelled morally to act accordingly.

As a good samaritan, ethics guides me to inform his wife of this unfortunate situation so the couple can seek counseling to restore bliss to the marital union.

This young delightful couple deserves a future of honesty and love, and I will try to further their aspiration to the best of my ability. So, Alex, don't fret, I'm going to help you out.

A man as charismatic as he is would naturally find it difficult to confine himself to one woman. John Kennedy had similar issues. But, as Lloyd Bensten told Dan Quayle in the '88 debate "you ain't no Jack Kennedy."

Jack Kennedy was a competent, pleasant and humble man. Sadly, these qualities are absent in Alex. I pray he acquires these traits. Perhaps I have been called to provide him with this much needed spiritual awakening.

5:02,
You sound like an erudite, perspicacious individual with a good sense of humor. How a third-rate attorney and fourth-rate Lothario-- who perpetually appears to be sucking on a lemon-- could get under your skin leaves me perplexed.
Working under creeps like that -- who constantly berate people below them, exercising every iota of the petty authority vested in them in order to compensate for the overwhelming doubt they rightfully feel about their own adequacy -- is what made me push even harder to get out of that end of the legal business, which I managed to do shortly after my encounter with that prick. I cannot say for certain whether Sr. Gallard(o) ever knew the puta in question in the biblical sense, but I do know that she directed him to fire certain people, insofar as he had this authority (apparently he did not), and I can only assume that her only leverage was in the form of flesh. I had no idea that his spouse was a mail-order bride. We only knew that he had just had a child, so everyone had the decency (unlike him) to look the other way from the shameless spectacle of the two of them carrying on in the office. Apparently butterface has moved on to biglaw, but she ought never to forget that bitter memories can last a lifetime, and the folks who moved that project are legion. Wonder what her female superiors would think about her past...

This is 5:02, provide me with information on how to contact his wife if you can. This prick needs to be fucked over.... Shit face Alex Gallard(o) is one stupid bastard.

Anonymous said...

1:00PM/5:02PM, I am not advising you to do so, but if you are determined to do it, the easiest way to contact the wife is simply go into his office when he is not there and review the recent numbers called or received (most modern office phones have this feature). one of them is bound to be his home number or wife's cell number.
or just look it up in the telephone directory, give a call or send a registered letter to her. I just confirmed that his name and address are listed in the google rphonebook. while he is a total douche, it was a long time ago and I am over him and all the other unpleasant folks at S&C.

I worked at S&C and got hit on by a bunch of staff attorneys all the time. They would constantly bother me, running in to tell stupid jokes, sharing sad stories about their pathetic lives. Most of them were incapable of being actual attorneys. They lacked the intellect, confidence and work ethic. Basically they were just good at sitting their asses down in front of Concordance and bossing temps and yet they acted like getting hired by S&C to be a staff attorney was like getting hired as an associate on partner track. NOT!!!

Anonymous said...

7:47, I agree with you. I witnessed the same conduct. Pathetic losers...especially Gallard.

He is a married prick staff atty that works for Sullivan and Cromwell. He is rumored to pursue infidelity as a sport. His facial expression and demeanor is shit so it is unlikely he is able to use his petty authority to bed any female temp atty. He is universally disliked...probably even by himself. A real sloppy deceitful character.
