New York Times/AP - Law Schools Growing, But Jobs Aren't

Honestly, I have little sympathy. Every third person I knew in college was off to law school. Even Antonin Scalia, in a talk I saw maybe 20 years ago, noted that although he loved the law and had enjoyed his career, wondered what the country was doing putting so many of its best and brightest in an occupation that at best facilitated the productive work of others and at worst impeded it.

Anonymous said...

This is serious business. As was noted in the last blog entry, these schools are now asking young people to invest vast sums of money that rival the payments on a midsize house. Why are these schools being allowed to get by with shifty accounting? If stock/mortgage brokers engaged in this behavior, they would be thrown in the slammer.

Anonymous said...

I work at Constantine and it's true: we sued TTT and he can no longer write anything about our law firm.

Anonymous said...

I highly doubt that. I imagine Constantine just wasn't interesting enough to post about.

Anonymous said...

Anita's article merely provided "tips" on finding the most toolish, debt-ridden sheep to fill the ranks of your clicking factory. What is interesting or novel about that?

Anonymous said...

what is interesting, if you need help figuring it out, is that for almost a year ttt wrote about how bad it was to work at constantine and how evil the people were - remember: anita in her witch outfit, the eunuch with the shrill voice - and now that constantine put out a publication (written by Anita) on how to pick contact attorneys to have the most succesful experience and tom just ignores it seem more than odd. This has nothing to do with constantine, and I am not one of those tom bashers, I just find it very odd that he is ignoring the issue.

Yes, it's crazy what's going with the student loan debacle. It appears to be a new bubble that will require a govt bailout. There is an NYT article today about the crippling debt for chefs, much the law school disaster.

What's happened during Clinton and Bush administrations (yes it was both guys) is that the schools were in cahoots with the loan companies for continuous tuition hikes and knowingly heaping debt on these poor kids; the schools know 90% of these people will end up losers but keep using the loans from the poor students to provide scholarships for their best students, who make the school look good. The rest are just sad pack mules for the successful attorneys/chefs.

So will Obaman offer to payback all of the loans for these poor fools? I wonder what his solution will be.

Anonymous said...

Yes We Can!

Obama will waive a magic wand and all the world's misery will disappear.

NOT!

He will probably provide even more "opportunity" in the form of more TTT schools, more loans which will ultimately lead to more debt.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how long ttt will ignore anitas article. Come on tom at least tell us WHY you cant talk about the article. Show some balls. Doing so wont defame anyone.

Nice job.

Writing about Anita won't change anything; it won't help pay off your astronomical loan debt, or pay you a liveable wage/benefits. Taking on the ABA and the TTT scam will.

Anonymous said...

Yes the news is finally breaking, hahahahhaaah. No wonder that troll is so desperate to change the subject. hahahahah.

The law school scam will soon be outed. I foresse state attorneys general getting in on the feeding frenzy.

Let's take a look at these statistics, Valvoline Dean and Joan King. Do think there are misrepresentations here?

I hope AG andrew cuomo is reading this today.

Anonymous said...

Yes, but Anita, in her article, is preaching the gospel about hiring contract attorneys, and how wonderful it is for law firms to do so.

Seriously, Tom, the queen of all underhand softballs has been lobbed at your strike zone. Swing, Tom. Swing.

Anonymous said...

Hi Joan King!

Anonymous said...

how can we beleive anything tom says about the conditions of contract legal workplace if he cannot even talk about constantine now - after try trashing them for so long - as they pretend that they are the authority in the temp world?

who cares about law school tuition and loans.

Anonymous said...

hi. who is that?

-- joan king

Anonymous said...

By mentioning the article, ttt would out Anita. That's why he can't mention the article. Poor Tom. He must be dying.

Anonymous said...

if writing about anita will not do anyting then why did ttt do it in the first place. isn't that why this site exists - because tom hated anita?

Anonymous said...

Just in:

In response to the WSJ article, Joan King finally included temps on the post-graduate career survey:

http://www.brooklaw.edu/career/empstats/

She failed however to say how many people actually RESPONDED to the survey!!! Statistics 101 teaches you that in order for a survey to be reputable, you should know how many graduates are included in the sample size. This is tricky dick accounting at its best.

Anonymous said...

If you think the AG, or the Democrats will "investigate" the TTT scam, you are utterly naive. Constantine was Spitz's left hand pal, and probably still has friends in high places. The dean of BLS went to law school and is friends with Hillary Clinton. The list goes on and on. Higher education is to the Democrats what the oil industry is to the Republicans.

Anonymous said...

joan king and anita are two sides of the same coin

fuck 'em

Anonymous said...

Umm, Spitz is out office now and was forced to resign in a horrendous scandal. Cuomo is already looking into the student loan fiasco. The law schools and other statistics manipulators ripping off our young people could be next on the list.

Anonymous said...

I will believe it, when I see it.

Anonymous said...

WHAT ABOUT SONY?

Anonymous said...

If ever there was an industry in need of serious scrutiny it is graduate and professional education.

Look at all of the starving law and cooking school grads. I'm sure that further investigation will yield further sectors of corruption.

What is the ABA's take on all of this?

Anonymous said...

"Too many stats are self-reported. Henderson's research has found evidence of "massive exaggeration" by law schools when they report what graduates are up to.

If we really started unpacking these numbers,' Henderson said in an interview, 'we would see some really unattractive accounting how law schools classify their graduates. It would be borderline scandalous."

Are you hearing that Cuomo? How come when I wrote to Cuomo about a shady online merchant that sold me a defective toaster they intervened and were all of it, but when I contacted them re shady TTT accounting I was met with deaf silence?

Anonymous said...

The ABA is not doing anything, because the members that populate it are largely made up of biglaw partner constituents. Having huge heavily indebted temp pools that you can mark up at 200% is serving the interests of biglaw quite nicely.

Anonymous said...

MBA programs lie, too. They like to claim that "average starting salaries are $60,000" when jobs are also only offered to the top 10%, those whose daddies work already at the firm or those who were sent by their firm to obtain an MBA.
MBA career offices also encourage commission-based companies to interview. Then claim someone taking a job cold-calling to sell stocks will make $60,000 a year.

For our national readers, here is some cut and pastes of old of doc. review hell stories:

At Hughes Hubbard:

"Hahaha. I laughed out loud when I saw this thread! I actually saw "Lily" today at the office.
For those who don't know, "Lily" is not her actual name. Her real name rhymes with Lily and I will use this psuedonym to protect the guilty.
Anyone at HH knows who she is. She is a grotesque 300 lbs, and her physical deformities are utterly beyond description. Her best friend is a bag of cheetos, and her fat, mangled fingers are often coated with their orange powder. She drives her slaves (this is the slang for "managing" temps or "contract attorneys") offsite in a basement in New Jersey. I believe there may be windows, but I have not been there myself to verify this fact.
Lily does maintain a presence in the New York office, rather unfortunately, and we see her rear her ugly head from time to time. Probably just taking orders from some non-equity partner in charge of the firm's various doc review projects. The sole purpose of this woman's existence is to squeeze every last drop of efficiency out of each slave, and to make their miserable lives as horrible as possible, all for $35/hour.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Lily" the (17th?) year associate who "manages" the contract attorneys is a fat, nasty monster. "Lily" once ripped a cellphone out of someone's hand at the offsite location. "Lily" also fired people on the spot for having newspapers at their "desks" and wanted to take away garbage cans as a way to make the space cleaner (someone needs to retake the logic games portion of the LSAT). "Lily" takes it upon herself to impose cost-cutting measures which only serve to undermine efficiency and work product quality. She has brought about a state of affairs whereby overtime is treated like the holy grail and the miserly meal allowance and tickets to ride in cars with maniac drivers are glimmering mirages in a desert. Meanwhile, newspapers reveal that the client has set aside billions of dollars in legal fees and that the firm has matched associate salary hikes to remain competitive. Translation: "Lily" is a woman getting paid over $200,000 / year to sit on her ass and who is trying to cheat contract attorneys out of every penny.

Speaking of bathrooms, in lockstep with Paul, Weiss, the temps working at the offsite location have to sign in and out to use the bathroom. An attorney at that space was driven to smearing his feces on the wall of the men's room there. "Lily" surmised that the substance was actually chocolate. The temps kept in the dungeon of the firm's main office have to use grimy hall passes to the bathroom. The ceiling of the men's room crashed down into a stall and was left in that state for a week. All of the toilets regurgitate waste in the same manner of the firm's work product-billing system. The floor beneath the bathrooms is rotting, and the stench invades the air. One time, they refilled the soap dispensers with flourscent pink gummy goop. People of the same and opposite gender were indeed followed to the bathroom by the ex-communicated on-site coordinator. At one point, the temps were told they would have to deduct bathroom breaks from their paychecks. No wonder people are driven to smearing feces on the walls . . .
As for "Egg Man," this man is so physically repulsive that his image is excluded from the firm's website. Physicality aside, the man is a dick. His former law school classmates remember him running up to professors to tell on students who hadn't done the reading for the day. These tactics are still employed in his capacity of slave-driver at HHR. Anyone arriving at the site a minute late must report to him. Although he occupies hallways and door frames like a clogged artery, his step is feather-light. He loves to stealthily sneak into the workroom and "catch" the temps under his tutelage engaged in non-work behaviors. He pits coworkers against each other and tries to convert some into snitches; however, often the tattletale gets the axe along with the troublemaker. He doesn't seem to do any billable legal work apart from taking up space bumbling around and stuttering instructions about the doc review. He always has a sinister expression on his face, belying the myth that fat people are supposed to be jolly. In fact, he may be getting his "jollies" from putting temps on edge through his espionage and witch hunt tactics. He is single-handely responsible for many of the progressively worsening conditions on the project. In the year since his hiring (more likely than not accomplished by means of nepotism), he has engaged in a Reign of Terror. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!"

Anonymous said...

At Paul Weiss:

"Doc. review at Paul Weiss. $21 an hour to be locked in a windowless basement full of dead cockroaches with the fire exits blocked and ONE bathroom for 65 people (that we also shared with the homeless people who live in the concourse below Rockefeller Center) all for 80 hours a week."

Anonymous said...

At Constantine:

Yesterday was another turbulent day at work. Anita informed us that we were not allowed to leave the floor, a.k.a. our crammed workspaces, without first signing out with her. This new rule will be strictly enforced (it applies even to those taking a two minute cigarette break) and anyone caught violating it will be fired on the spot. The Eunuch, meanwhile, stood nodding in agreement with the new resolution and kindly reminded us that we were still allowed to use the bathroom. He warned us, however, not to abuse the privilege and to spend as little time in there as possible.

Confusion ensued, however, when someone asked if this new rule applied to the use of the kitchen sink. Anita and the Eunuch appeared perplexed by the unexpected inquiry and told us that they would have to get back to us with the exact parameters of what constitutes a bathroom break.

Someone finally told off the Eunuch!

The Eunuch is a weak bully. The purpose of bullying is to hide inadequacy. Good managers manage, bad managers bully. Bullies bully to hide their inadequacy and weakness, and to divert attention away from their incompetence.

Tonight, the Eunuch emerged from his glass-encased cube, as he typically does after Anita leaves for the day, ready to pick a fight. In a condescending tone, he announced to the weary-eyed group (many of whom had been working since 8 a.m.) that we were to stop talking immediately, as it was "only" 7 p.m.

Typically, this is the type of condescending crap that you learn to deal with when you accept one of these gigs. Sometimes, however, a turning point may be reached when the employee finally realizes that they are not dealing with a normal human being like themselves, but with a dysfunctional, disordered individual who feels the need to exploit a fraudulent and broken system. One brave individual realized this and defiantly shouted out the simple word "So," in response to the Eunuch's observation that it was only 7 p.m.

Boy, was the Eunuch pissed. He hammered, stammered, and spun around a few times before demanding to know, "Who said that!" The Eunuch then went on to threaten us, in his always prepubescent voice, by asking us if, "Anyone has a problem with that?"

At McCarter:

I was one of the recipients of the email axe from Hudson yesterday, and I guess I'm as pissed off as any of the rest of us who received the same message. They obviously didn't have the nerve to tell anyone in person. What wimps! The irony (for lack of a better word) is that, after a day without almost any assignments, David King stood in front of us on Friday and announced that the office was closing at 5 p.m. But he was quick to reassure us that that there's still lots of work ahead and that he'd see us all on Monday. The humane way of handling this situation would have been to end things then and there, and do the honorable thing by telling us the truth. At least that way we'd have had the opportunity to gather up our belongings and leave with some dignity. Now I'm put in the uncomfortable position of having to return to the office to retrieve my personal possessions when I no longer work there. I refuse to feel humiliated, but it sure will be uncomfortable.

Being treated this way is no way to thank those of us who worked extra hours and worked hard. Last time I checked, it doesn't cost extra money to treat people respectfully and professionally."

Welcome to document review hell class of '08!

Anonymous said...

I don't get what this is all about. All these college sociology majors feel entitled to a good, well-paid lawyering job like on TV? You don't have to do what you are doing. I just checked and just GE has 1810 engineering and technology jobs.

Anonymous said...

4:15 - great, why don't you apply for one of those excellent aforementioned GE jobs?

Then go back to suckering more law students into your TTT law school.

Anonymous said...

It is very much 2 different sides of the same coin. I was once at a career in coding seminar hosted by Joan King and Lexolution. Slave catcher handing the slaves over to the plantation owner. How appropriate.

Unknown said...

I already have one of those jobs. Why would you suggest I have anything to do with a TTT law school? Perhaps you all don't have jobs because there are too many of you. Didn't any of you do your homework on opportunities before you went out and blew $50 or $100,000 on a law degree? By the way, these schools charge what they do because they can. Cripes, what a bunch of whiners.

Anonymous said...

When the sheep start to revolt (and drop out or even better, don't apply to law school), the plantations will shut down.

Anonymous said...

Joan King and her cronies are making out like bandits:

Joan Wexler Dean - $455,344/ $51,000

Joel Gora Assoc Dean - $302,403/$55,831

Nick Garber Assoc Dean - $285,811/$55,630

Margaret Berger Professor - $254,977/42,818

Not only fabulous salaries, but great benefits and pensions too.

Too bad we can't gain access to some of the money these temp agencies pull in. We know biglaw partners are pulling in record profits. The loan companies are also doing pretty well.

While all this is going on, tuition, outsourcing, and more TTT schools are all on the increase!

Anonymous said...

thanks for sharing the old horror stories with us about Hughes Hubbard, Lisa Heart, Constantine, and Paul Weiss. That was a time when ttt was doing good work.

Now he has been scared silent. Too bad.

Anonymous said...

No one should enter law school without a plan. The work is far less prestigious than when I graduated too many years ago to count. It can still be a great career if you know what you want to do. However, there are many career alternatives. Where I work it is more lucrative to be an engineer or a manager than it is to be an attorney.

Anonymous said...

This article was also published today in the SF Chronicle. Situation out west is just as dire. UC Irvine and more Mom & Pop non-ABA schools are opening by the minute. Can anyone say SATURATION.

Hey, I'm an associate in a big firm and I'm miserable. You can't believe the pressure I'm under. I hate my firm, I hate my boss, I hate my job.....I hate my life. I'm staying just until I get out of debt. Then I may temp. You guys make decent money AND none of you is developing an ulcer from work-related stress. Don't deny it, because I've worked alongside temps for over a year.

Anonymous said...

Temping is more stressful than being an associate. No decent associate has to temp, ever. If you do, you are a complete idiot.

After your gilded associateship you can lateral to another big firm, shop for a boutique or land a plumb in house gig. At worst you can land a cushy staff job and manage doc review. No, you're not temping.

Temping is horrible and stressful, you can be let go at anytime with NO SEVERANCE or reason why. It is horrible and soulcrushing.

Oh yeah, we have no benefits, life insurance or retirement packages from the temp agencies b/c we rarely work for one long enough to accrue them. Even if we did, the agency benefits are not affordable on temp wages.

Anonymous said...

No ulcer?

Every morning before I leave for work, I have to check my voicemail to see whether or not I received the infamous "midnight firing" the night before. I do this EVERY morning, 7 days a week.

Anonymous said...

I am $150,000 in debt with no prospect of being able to pay it back. I am seriously considering becoming a part-time call girl. A friend I graduated with is considering doing document review and spending the summer in a tent in order to save on rent.

Anonymous said...

Well 8:14 how hot are you? Will you be servicing temps or partners who can afford to spend more money on you? Maybe Update can manage you and send you out on assignments for both doc review and dates! Update is a pimp anyway.

do you if others have others sued him too? might explain why the topics on this have really declined. we went from seeing horns on managing partners to an elephant with a naked golden crapping into fire.

if tom is being sued, lets start a legal defense fund for him.

"I work at Constantine and..."

Ha ha ha... your firm is so irrelevant in the bigger picture that its a wonder anyone even mentioned it.

Overly cheap and easy-to-get loans, deceptive advertising by the law schools, and complete lack of oversight by the ABA are the reasons for this mess.

Anonymous said...

It's true, the bigger picture is more important than some years old content. This blog post is about the now national news about the decline of the legal industry amid the explosion law schools. It's about crippling debt and no job opportunities.

I posted this response before. If you read your history books you could read that medical profession was having the same saturation problems the last half of the 19th century. Anyone could have walked into a store front medical or dental school and walk out with a diploma. How did they stop this litigation, no, government action, no, or curriculum change, yes.

With the exception of the law library law schools are cheap to run, cash cows. If the ABA were to add a mandatory 4 th year paid residency, arranged by the school. This is similar to Solicitors and Barristers residency in UK. Also, have mandatory 3d year clinical programs with rotations similar to US medical clerkship s. This will produce more competent graduates and increase the cost of a law school to take it out of the cash cow range.

On the brighter side, the horrors of attending law school and practicing law are being further exposed every day.

Soon we'll be watching these fetid diploma mills shutting down.

Look at poor Lisa and Timmy. The both went to law school and now two years after graduating and passing the bar, cannot find jobs. They are both so far in debt that they will be living with their parents for the rest of their lives!

Anita of the toilet law firm Constantine Cannon is a low class troll who cannot buy class with her partner compensation. A. A former temp fired by Anita - Highly doubt this one. In temp town, a year is a lifetime. Even a whacked out temp wouldn't hold a grudge this long.

B. A recruiter whose services were passed over by Anita - More likely, but improbable IMO. Everyone has long understood that Anita is exclusively an Update girl. Only Update knows how to put it out if you know what I mean, and they are the foremost experts in running impenetrable labor camps.

C. An employee within the Constantine offices trying to sabotage Anita. DING!

Maybe there is a lot of resentment toward Anita at Constantine. I heard a rumor that she engages in human sacrifice late at night alone in her office. Apparently, she killed and burned at least 763 contract attorneys this way.

Yet another rumor holds that she's planning a coup d'état at Constantine, and that she intends to stick the heads of her enemies on spikes after she's done seizing power.

Who knows what's true and what's fiction?

763, eh? Well all this talk about proliferation of law schools and saturation is moot then.

not only do we have to put up with this explosion of law schools, but now we are facing outsourcing of legal jobs to india.

In South Florida where I live, there are 4 law schools in a 30 mile radius.

University of Miami
Nova Southeastern
St Thomas Law School
FIU Law School

This has driven salaries to below school teacher levels!
the only ones making out like bandits are the deans and faculty that in their wisdom have never practiced law a single day, much less study and pass a bar exam!

I don't think the anita - tom conspiracy is true. let's break down the facts. if you read her article on EDD (no, that is not erectile dysfunction disease you idiot lawyers, although that may be why she was so mean) she is not against hiring anyone from a school that the bitter ttt calls ttt. or maybe, they are both clever enough to have planned it that way!?! ah, now we are getting somewhere. as for those who are obsessively writing about anita and the article, I don't think that they are constantine employees. but wait! anita had her little (actually very big) sidekick, let's call her laurie, who kissed her anita's ass on the project tom used to write so fervently about in his better days. maybe . . . just maybe, this laurie still works for anita and is now trying to take her job! brilliant!!!!

now, talk about your mistress's article tom so everyone can see what a pohoney you are. maybe, just maybe, tom is constantine himself. WOW!!!!

See what you've caused, Tom? Do you SEE what you've caused??

I hear that Anita's husband is banging a slutty temp. Next, Anita will write an article on how to have a successful marriage. It will be on the same principle as her article on temps: Do as I say, not what I do.

I think the Anita guy is a scorned temp recruiter...lol.

How bizarre, that anyone would devote so much of their time to a useless article by a small law firm partner.

Face it guys, Anita wins over all of you, she's a partner. You are just pathetic losers. It may come as a shock, but professionals in a given line of business write articles (like Anita did) to profess expertise and drum up future business.

What this means is that her law firm is trying to expand its document review operations and lend their expertise on a consulting basis. It's a highly profitable line of work and she is an expert on how to operate it efficiently.

You retards might want to read the tea leaves and start figuring out a way to contact her for future employment. Judging from your idiotic posts, document review or scanning are about the limits of your mental capacity. So you shouldn't be so rude to a woman who could your future employer.

As far as "Laurie" goes, she's an obese, mentally unstable freak show. She would never even make it to associate, never mind partner. Anita has nothing to fear from any of these unaccomplished toilet lawyers. But she is an expert in squeezing dollars out of them for the benefit of her law firm. That's how she made partner, chumps.

Good for Anita. She's a professional and writes an article that maybe fifty people will care about and read.

Meanwhile, the "idiots" she employs write blogs and find themselves in articles that maybe 500,000 people will read.

Who is the real idiot?

You are a toad and an ass.
You have such brilliant observations about the temp world and Anita's motivation for writing the article. Thank you Mr. Obvious.
Furthermore, your defintion of winning and success shows how shallow you are. Anita was an ugly, low class person when she ran that project. The fact that she became partner doesn't change that. Laurie, I believe was the wrongfully accused mole on Anita's project and she is in fact a decent person. Of course you have to make an issue out of her weight because she doesn't fit into your definition of success in the business world.
Whatever you become in the business world, you will always be a fraud.
And I am done with you and Anita.

ahh, so 1:52, you've outed yourself as one of her workers. I'll bet she's currently wondering which one. I hope you're not blogging at work, you know they can track your activity on the network quite easily.

1:58 - All I have to say, "Hi Laurie"!

LOL! Anita relied on an overweight mole who turned around and stabbed her in the back. You can never trust work moles.

I still cant believe that you can be "an expert" in doc review. These clients hiring doc review consultants are retards. It's like hiring someone to teach you how to screw in a light bulb.

Sure, most of the "project consultants" or "project managers" are third rate hacks that couldn't make it as lawyers or even law student. They're usually not very bright and generally paid about $35,000 - $50,000 per year, tops.

They give you the same incorrect answers to every question and have poor problem solving skills. They specialize in the blaming the firm/client for all of their problems. Generally incompetent, they endeavor to be snotty (but usually fail), as they add nothing of value and fail at most things that they do. Overall, entirely useless because the services firms refuse to hire quality people, instead sticking to some mediocre lardass that blathers on about herself constantly.
