Everyone's getting rich off the work we do, except us. We don't even get health insurance or retirement benefits, if we get sick we don't get paid. We can't take vacation, because we won't get paid for it and we will probably get fired if we take that much time off. As the final insult, they are outsourcing our jobs to India. What a bunch of greedy assholes.

I want to see something really heinous happen in this profession to shake it to its knees. These agencies need to go out of business and the law firms that are exploiting us as well. A firm like Kaye Scholer who uses Indian labor for example.

American Express has some nerve using the name it does unless it means "American jobs Express to other countries."

This country is truly heading into the crapper. Why won't that monkey in the White House do something aside from just printing more money?

Even the decent agencies are now going downhill. The once solid Strategic in NYC is now officially Frankendined....very sad moment.

To be fair, Hudson does offer health insurance, a Charles Schwab 401(k) plan, and some other minor benefits to long term contractors.

The people who get screwed are short term temps who bounce from project to project.

Seriously, this blog is getting more ridiculous by the post. Nobody has to work 80 hours a week to fill their gas tank, unless they are driving some sort of armoured vehicle that takes 200 litres of JP-5. I can see having to work 80 hrs/week to help pay the mortgage or pay Scammie Mae's collection though...

What health insurance? Do you mean those low end HMO's with sky high deductibles and little to no coverage that the agencies don't contribute to? The ones that certain of the low end agencies would take your premiums for, but not enroll you in?

Interesting.

7:37 PM, Hudson's insurance for long term people is ok. They offer United Healthcare PPO plans with deductibles and Out of Pocket Maximums that are competitive with what you can buy on the open market. It's not great, but I've seen a lot worse. A lot of agencies offer these plans that are worse than the emergency coverage you can buy right out of school. Some of them have lifetime maximums so low that they might not even cover the cost of treating injury from a single accident.

I'm all for calling out Hudson when they screw up, but blaming them for lack of health insurance and other benefits is unfair because the benefits are available.

Anonymous said...

Exactly. The exact plan you can buy on the open market, which means THEY DON'T OFFER HEALTH INSURANCE.

Anonymous said...

That's not entirely correct, because there are people who are excluded from the open market because of health history.

Although not as much as we should get, Hudson does give Paid Time Off days for either vacation or sick days (whichever happens to be the case.)

For every 400 hours you work, you get a day off. Presuming 40 hour workweeks, you'd get a paid day off every 10 weeks or so, which is like 5 paid days off a year. And if you're going more than a 40 hour workweek, it would be more.

At least one other agency (either update or hirecounsel) is even more aggressive, with a tiered system that looks like this:

0-2000 hours worked: 1 paid day off for every 400 hours worked

2001-4100 hours worked: 1 paid day off for every 300 hours worked

4101+ hours: 1 paid day off for every 200 hours worked.

So yea, you'd get at least some days off. Plus, Hudson will pay for July 4th, Thanxgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

The days off should be more generous, but they're not zero.

What I'd like to know is if Hudson has any real temp assignments, other than short term? They appear to be collecting resumes, but for what specific project, if any post McCarter?

We are all aware of the substandard "benefits" they offer. They should stop exploiting their workers and pay better rates and legitimate benefits, worldwide.

The 400 hour thing is pathetic. That's not a benefit, it's a joke. Most people never reach the treshhold to get it. How about decent company subsidized benefits, not some crappy PPO that anyone can get on their own. Oh yeah, it's over a $1,000 per month to insure your family, what a farce.

Hudson operates the most disgraceful sweatshops of all. I wonder what their offshore operations look like and what kind of benefits they offer...maybe we need to poke a little deeper.

I wonder what Hudson Southeast Asia looks like? Kathie Lee Gifford.

We are talking sales here. You perform you get the perks. You fail you get the boots. Simple formula simple outcome. next question.

10:52 PM,

Health Insurance aside, what exactly is "substandard" about Hudson's benefits? The 401(k) plan has a reasonable choice of mutual funds & company match, and you can sign up to pay insurance and some transit costs from pre-tax dollars.

Are you working short-term or long term projects? That makes a big difference.

you are not getting rich by doing doc review because doc review is for retarded people! think about it...any idiot off the street in Shitadephia can do what you do. you should be thankful that anyone is paying you the kind of money you are making. wah, wah, wah! why can't i get a job at a law firm. wah, wah, wah. i wasted all this money on Widener Law School. wah, wah, wah. Julie Dailey is mean. wah, wah, wah. why can't i have the corner office. wah, wah, wah. i should be team lead. wah, wah, wah david king is a loser....ok, I'll give you that one...David King is a loser...the King of all you losers! wah, wah, wah!

Anonymous said...

Sure 8:16 AM, sure. You look so smart, making all those straw men to tear down.

Most of the document reviewers I know chose to review documents because they just don't give a rat's ass about a "law firm job" or the "corner office." A lot of doc reviewers have been in the associate's chair, and have decided it isn't for them.

Widener, Julie Daily, David King are all irrelevant. We just don't care.

The best way is to boycott the sweatshop agencies: Hudson, Dine, Lexolution and probably now Strategic because of the newly hired S. Treadwell.

The more pressure we can put on those sleazebags will ultimately reward the decent agencies with greater business. Lets' put the market forces to work and people like 8:16 out of business.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, 11:53, good luck with that. Let's see how long before you starve. Better apply for food stamps with that "boycott".

Don't forget to "sue" your law school! HAHAHAHAHHAH!!!!!!!

Working for Update is almost as enjoyable as bathing in elephant diarrhea.

Only if you have no "real life" responsibilities (such as children, elder care duty, single paycheck home with partner/spouse not working and relying on your paycheck, outrageous rent, overhead, and monthly student loan payments)can one afford to "boycott" the agencies in this economy. In an abstract sense, it is effective, but only if there are new market entrants e.g. Clutch to take business away from the worst offenders and only if the law firms and/or corporations have long-term projects to offer. In this economic climate, I wouldn't count on it. Recent article stated that U.S. law firms are being blocked/fought off by the Bar in India e.g. entry to practice within India's jurisdiction bc/several multinationals are setting up subsidiaries, joint ventures, or affiliates in India. During this fight, they are trying to break-in by using the "outsourcing" route to establish a foothold. Therefore, this outsourcing alleged threat may be more illusory for immediate project needs of NYC firms, unless said firms' client include one of the multinationals moving into India. This is a developing trend, and may not pan out to be much, particularly if they aren't trained in U.S. law/litigation. Privilege is a concept oftentimes treated differently in the UK and the EU. But, who knows.....nothing ever surprises me in this eroding profession.

When's the SICK OUT?

Anonymous said...

I agree - what we need is what we would probably never get - an agency who actually cares about us. In a perfect world, this would be great...but as we all know, we arent living in fantasy land are we? Too many big companies who only care about their stockholders and bottom lines.

Anonymous said...

but when is the SICK OUT??? when do we get to show the agencies WHO'S BOSS??? When do we strike for our UNION? huh?? When?

Looks like Sean Treadwell is up to his old tricks again, now at Strategic. He's been posting on Craigslist seeking doc reviewers for a big securities class action case (see link in previous post above), but neglecting to mention that it's a PLAINTIFF'S gig. Here's what the Peter San agency who posted for the same project on Career Builder:

Great Project Starting Mid –May lasting several months to work on a plaintiffs class action matter for a top boutique; this is a great firm, they treat their temporary employees well. Additionally; must have securities litigation document review experience, and experience using Concordance. Please specify in your cover letter if you have quality control experience.

The rate is $37/hour

***

Sean is notorious for luring attorneys new to document review into plaintiff projects that effectively blacklist them from future defense gigs (the bulk of the work out there). BEWARE.

I work on a long term project for Hudson and their benefits are better than most temp agencies. Hudson is by no means perfect, but knocking them for their benefits isn't a very good argument.

Anonymous said...

Blacklist Shawn Treadwell. Do not give him your business. He is the worst of the worst. Drive him out of business. Do not deal withhim.

Allan Cohen is a crafty devil. Look for his horns.

Hudson is fine; I'm on an LT project with them in PHILA -- the firm running project is good. Considering present market conditions, I'd much rather be with HL than grinding it out (for half the money) at a typical small firm.

Anonymous said...

No complaints about Hudson, at least in DC ... really, NY must be in a different universe.

The only people I saw get let go before the end of the project were people who took advantage of Hudson's trust, no one looks over your shoulder - do your work, hit your number and collect $2k a week.

Not to mention that they were very friendly and encouraging of solo's.

Anonymous said...

Question for anonymous 8:17 pm. By the way, what is the deductible, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket maximum amounts for Hudson's United Healthcare PPO plan?

For transparency purposes, someone should post a summary of all of the temp agency's health plans (or lack thereof) for people to compare.

for the person claiming that contract attorney's are retarded just wait. About 95% of the contract attorneys I know, including myself have been laid off from the precious "law firms" and are just doing this type of work to make ends meet until we hang our own shingles, or get another job.

So, all of you judgmental, assanine law firm attorneys who think that your job is secure, look again. The terrible economy is effecting law firms moreso than anywhere else. So, dont be surprised when one day after working your ass off to make your billable hours, and maybe a partnership when they walk into your office and hand your ass a pink slip.

When your bills pile up, and your house note is due, and you take that contract job with the so called "retarded" attorneys, then make a comment. otherwise dont judge anyone until you have been there.

Get off your damned high horse, NO ONE IS ABOVE THIS.

A recruiter at a small firm said that Hudson is monopolizing the doc rev projects in the SF area. Is that true? I haven't seen any job postings by them locally.
