Health Care/Sick Leave Laws

Several new health care/sick leave laws may effect contract attorneys in several big city markets:

D.C. could become the second U.S. city to require employers to provide paid sick leave to all workers. The D.C. Council is scheduled to vote on the measure Jan. 8:

San Francisco already requires agencies to provide contract attorneys with paid sick leave. Today, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals also upheld a San Francisco ordinance which will now allow for universal health care within the city. A similar law is being proposed within the California legislature.

When will this come to New York? I really suffered under the Hudson "Star Shit" plan.

Good luck actually using a sick day. Even calling in sick WITHOUT GETTING PAID can subject you to a firing.

If you want paid sick days, go get a perm job. No one owes you anything. Starbucks offers insurance- go work there.

It's about time the agencies start adhering to the same rules as other employers in NY, especially employers of those with professional degrees.

Yeah, last time I checked we are not independent contractors, but rather employees of the temp agencies. Reputable employers offer subsidized healthcare, not $1,000 per month post-tax payments.

I think joining the Teamsters would be an excellent way to gain leverage and finally get decent treatment.

Where do we sign up?

Looks like a large NYC firm is starting the new year off with layoffs, 35 more to throw into the temp pool...

Did anyone hear about the uninsured contract attorney that contracted melanoma? Whatever happened to her?

I do have a perm job, and we don't get health insurance either. God, this profession sucks.

Anonymous said...

9:48, you accepted your "perm" job knowing there was no health insurance. That's no one's fault but yours. Not the professions.

Anonymous said...

9:48 - are you deaf and blind? Read the ebay listing for the guy selling his law degree, do you really not think this is a miserable profession after this?

And so the layoffs begin.

"When employees are squeezed hard enough, then you have the possibility of a genuine recession as technically defined. People buy less, so growth declines, to the point where even the economic over-class has to sit up and take notice. This is happening in Japan, where a recent Wall Street Journal headline announces: “Growing Reliance on Temps Holds Back Japan’s Rebound: Firms Increasingly Add Part-Time Workers; Spending Power Lags.” The U.S., where consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of the economy compared to a little more than half in Japan, is even more vulnerable to a downturn in personal consumption."

perhaps on the first day the new law takes effect, all contract attorneys should call in sick.

Anyone that takes a sick day gets fast-tracked to the blacklist.

What should really happen is a class action, all aggrieved employees vs. agencies.

"Starbucks offers insurance"

That insurance for Part-timers is a joke. $5000 annual cap. $90 office visit deductable. $200 test deductable. cost $50 bi-weekly from a $7.50 hr gross pre-tax. God forbid you actually get sick. $5000 in medical care would get you 1 day's care.

@10:18-

First you say in an earlier post to "go get a permanent job if you want health insurance". Now, suddenly, you say "you should blame yourself for taking that permanent job without health insurance". So I guess that makes you a liar claiming having a permanent job entitles you to get employee health insurance.

Then again, it could be you're just some little dickweed troll getting his jollies off. If so, congratulations on a job pathetically done.......

1:11 - don't let 10:18 bother you. Some people will go down with the ship of an irrational argument because they're not trying to make any point. They just want to hear themselves talk or see their words in print.

If people from the agencies and firms can't see the justice and fairness of this issue (better temp health benefits and paid sick days), especially in light of the fact that the agencies and firms are making a killing on the backs of the temps, then they're just idiots and/or miserable, greedy, selfish bastards.

Every temp sick with the flu at this time of year (alot) should lick their timesheet before submitting it in order to share the wealth with the slave masters. Or better yet, sneeze and cough in the proximity of one of your agency handlers.

Let's make the greedy, cheap bastards feel the pain of this vicious flu that's going around right now in NY. Force them to use up a few of their paid sick days so they'll have none left at the end of the year when the flu goes around templand again.

4:54, as a temp attorney no one cares about you and your want for benefits. Get a clue.

Anonymous said...

8:26, when we get your IP address and track you down, we hope you have adequate health benefits to cover the effects of the beat-down you'll be receiving.

@8:26PM -

So which of your personalities is posting now? Is it the scared child who doesn't like dogs? Is it the timid-looking woman who moonlights at an S&M bar? Could it be the middle-aged venture capitalist who taps his foot 3 times in the bathroom stall to initiate his secret liaison, or perhaps the forgetful grandfather who thinks he's still a colonel in the Army?

After all, wouldn't a person who's so far above "worthless temps" have better things to do than constantly post at this forum? We're all pulling for you to get the help you need, Sybil.

okay, 12:32- just keep us posted on how that temp unionizing/temp strike is working out for you.

Anonymous said...

4:51, if we were allowed to crack people's skulls open for crossing the picket line like they did in the old days when labor unions were first forming, it would work out a lot more quickly than you'd think.

I think some management got a beating, too. That would be perfect for you.

Anonymous said...

why should not being "allowed" to crack open skulls deter you? You clickers seem to have no problem inflating your timesheets and showing up to work drunk and/or stoned.

Anonymous said...

6:26, regarding coming to work drunk and/or stoned:

WE LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU!

Ever get cracked in the skull by a swinging mouse? It hurts.

@4:51 PM

I'm sure it would work out better than your ability to satisfy your girlfriend, according to all her complaints about you after I "helped" her in ways you apparently are unable to. Maybe you should spend less time obsessing over "putting those temps in their place", and more time keeping your woman happy, so she wouldn't have to look elsewhere for her needs, eh, Sybil?

Anonymous said...

Try again, 1:11, I'm gay.

Anonymous said...

@10:15PM-

And which of your personalities is gay, Sybil? Well, in any case, you really should've had the common courtesy to let your girlfriend know she was just a beard. Now I'll have to break the news to her the next time we rendezvous. She told me she was getting a little tired of you spongeing off of her and whining endlessly, so I'm guessing the gravy train will have made its last stop for you.

But cheer up....I'm sure somewhere, someone is looking for a professional asshole with schizo tendencies.

Like D.C all the cities of US should provide sick leave for better work,better health is necessary.
