Does it really matter? Every big firm in the world may as well be called WASP & WASP or WASP or WASP, WASP & WASP.

WASP & WASP (American/UK BigLaw) Is as racist as they come. No Jewish, Italian, Irish, Asian, Black, Latino, Arab partners.

The highest up the ladder they get is counsel (which means we sort of like you but you aren't a WASP so you will never be an equity partner.)

I'm talking mega-firms here like Clifford Chance....

And they all have their little country clubs which mainly exclude blacks and jews. As George Carlin once said, the only blacks you will see at a Country Club are carrying trays unless its a token black member. But he ain't gonna be a partner.

    PEAK DRIVES THE RATE DOWN!
Peak has teamed up with Doar Consulting and Sidley Austin to offer a $29 an hour rate to attorneys for a forty hour work beginning this week. This doc review project will take place in their stinking space on the eleventh floor at 31st street. Way to go Arnold Schlanger and Helene Diamond. You will win the race to the bottom. What a bunch of hagglers!

There are a few largelaw or largelaw-ish firms with ethnic names in the masthead, like Wilson Sonsini or Epstein, Becker & Green -- but these are very few and far-between, considering how many largelaw firms there are.

The really established old largelaw firms have all WASP names on the masthead.

Who in their right mind would pay you clowns more than 29hr? There's no work now. Labor is cheap... if you can get a piece of the action. I'm sure they have biglaw layoff victims ready to go.

    Viva la recession SUCKERS!

The problem of anti-Semitism in doc review is sickeningly obvious. Just viewing this thread alone shows the kind of bigotry that should disqualify the guilty posters from being permitted to practice law in any capacity. They are totally ignorant and completely without the moral standards which supposedly are required to be in good standing.

Damn! When people are talking crap about Indians and Nigerians people brush it off, oh but when someone mentions anything with the word Jew they are tar and feathered with anti-semitism and should be banned from practicing law! Give Tom a break.... seriously!

Just saw an ad on Monster for doc review in Herndon, VA (DC suburbs). JD REQUIRED, bar license not required but OK, no previous doc review required, PAY IS $23/hour. Contractor is Raytheon, which is actually a defense contractor, not a legal staffing agency.

What's interesting about this is that they are defining it as a job for LAW SCHOOL GRADS but not necessarily licensed attorneys -- although they will accept barred attorneys.

In other words, it's a job for glorified paralegal-type people with a JD, but they are not considering this the practice of law.

Yet it is doc review, and it's legal doc review.

So I guess stuff like this cropping up puts the rest to all the arguments that document review = practicing law.

The sad fact is that it never was practicing law to begin with. It was just something that was traditionally assigned to associate attorneys in law firms, so it became "practicing law" only by default and tradition.

Then when economic pressures caused clients to want to pay less and less, the work gradually got defined downward to what is essentially paralegal or "law clerk" work.

However, mushing it up with licensed attorneys means that licensed attorneys will also be working for $23/hour now.

If they can even get the work, because there are more unemployed licensed attorneys in most big cities than doc review at $23/hour to go around...

I really don't think this blog is anti-Semitic, so I'm not sure what that earlier poster was talking about. (Yes, I'm Jewish.) I have seen a disturbing amount of racist talk aimed at other people, namely blacks and South Asians, however.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous11:40 PM

yeah, the racist stuff directed at Indians is not cool, even if they are breaking the law, which I think might be one reason why people are saying some of the things they are saying about them. When people are mad they lose perspective sometimes.
Hopefully moving forward the blog and its posters will focus on the issues.
I do have to admit though that I like the talk about who is hot on doc reviews, that is kinda fun.

The problem is that the Indian outsourcing attorneys are not breaking the law in their own country, but would be if they did the same thing in the US.

And the law firms that hire these LPO contractors are hiding behind the fact that in the US, these things are not governed by laws per se, but by murky ethics decisions from state bars.

I am an Jewish-Indian attorney (yes, there really are Jewish Indians!)...

So I sit here in my rent-controlled apartment on the Upper East Side, eating curry-flavored matzoh ball soup, reading the Bhagavad Torah and kvetching about how my job was outsourced to my cousin Ephraim in Maharashthra.

Still, he makes less than his brother, the doctor, so I don't feel so bad!

Huh? How are Indians breaking the law? Someone offered them a job and they took it! If some dude from Japan outsourced to the US (stretch your imagination for a minute) and some Japanese dude offered you a cushy job in NYC to click on a mouse for ten hours- you would say, "oh, no, I can't take away jobs from those poor Japanese people." If so, kudos to you, my friend. I also thing you'd be on some kind of drug if you did that.

They are breaking US law by engaging in the practice of it. Even you accept the ABA opinion as law, which it isn't, can you seriously believe that the one or two US admitted attorneys that they have at the LPO sweatshops are providing the level of supervision required in the ABA opinion?
